The levels of edit as a management tool

The author defines the levels-of-edit concept. She then discusses applications of this concept in estimating, cost-sharing, scheduling, load-leveling, quality control, training, and, underlying all the others, communication. It is concluded that, besides its usefulness in managing money, time, and quality, the levels-of-edit concept is an obvious training tool, since it provides a mini-textbook-or checklist-for editors to follow. For the same reason, the concept can be used to monitor editorial performance and to spot areas where more training may be needed.<>
