The study corpus consists of texts addressing this issue, taken from 29 sex education books published in Poland between 1990 and 2018. We used elements of the so-called French discourse analysis (FDA). We first established the “designational paradigm” (i.e. the set of expressions used to name masturbation), then we examined the semantic relations of the elements of this paradigm and determined their position in the overall structure of the message. We also tried to identify the mechanisms that indicate the presence of dialogism and discourse heterogeneity. The analysis shows that translations contribute to changes in the Polish discourse on masturbation in several ways. In translated texts, indeed, the issue itself and the range of names used to discuss it are more developed. This is especially visible in the case of rewordings with a positive axiological value, which makes it possible to consider translations as a means of counterbalancing the negative discourse on masturbation that remains predominant in Poland.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66104440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stand-up comedy usually thrives as a live form of art. However, digital consumption has allowed comedians to reach a global audience via recording and broadcasting of their performances, and by doing so, it warranted the translation of the genre. In this study, after investigating how the audiovisual format affects comedians’ performances and their subtitling into Italian, I propose new, potentially useful concepts for a translational analysis of broadcast stand-up. Included is a discussion of the presence of audiovisual elements in the streamed specials and an inquiry of the fictionality of the scripted dialogue.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47718135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the findings of the PhD thesis Creactive Subtitles: Subtitling for All, defended by the author in 2016. To understand the need for a new way of providing accessibility, a review of digital communication is presented. It illustrates the pivotal role of digitization at present, after the pandemic has increased digital inequality for those who lack digital skills or access due to their sociodemographic background or sensory impairment. The impact of deafness is discussed, particularly, how early hearing loss influences the cognitive, communicative, linguistic, and social development of children and affects not only their language choice, but also the way they communicate, understand, and perceive the world we live in. Thus, to transmit what is perceived by means of hearing to make the audiovisual message complete for everyone, Sala [2016] designed the creactive subtitles. Targeted at younger (deaf) audiences, they are visual tailor-made subtitles designed ad hoc to be adapted to the unique features of each audiovisual product and its audiences’ abilities. Now that creactive subtitles are a reality, creactivity becomes the new goal: to spread the attitude to create new solutions in favor of accessibility.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66103065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This form of performed poetry is an underexplored text type in audiovisual translation (AVT). To fill in this gap, this paper provides an introductory account of current practices in the translation of slam poetry, both at local and international competitions held onsite and online. After that, the paper describes the challenges entailed in making slam poetry accessible for the d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing by means of intralingual subtitles added to pre-recorded sessions. The focus of the analysis is placed on the translation of literary style constrained by the immediacy inherent to this form of performance, in which speech rates are typically high. Translation challenges and solutions are illustrated with examples taken from a small corpus of four poems. The study is based on the authors’ experience in collaboration with the non-profit organization Associació RED927 Literatura Oral responsible for the main slam poetry event in Barcelona (Spain).","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48176541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case of Diary of Tootsies, a Thai comedy series and its translations is another representative example of the interconnection of professional and amateur AVT and the need to question the dichotomy between the two practices. This paper revisits professional subtitling conventions and the unconventional features typically associated with fansubs, and then maps them onto the subtitles in the indirect translation chain: the official English subtitles, used as a pivot, and the fansubs created by Spanish-speaking fans. The findings reveal several textual features that are usually attributed to fansubs can also be detected in official subtitles, for instance, unconventional uses of orthotypography, informal abbreviations, and additional explanations. Textual evidence indicates further blurring as these distinctive traits are not always adopted in the corresponding Spanish fansubs. In some cases, fansubbers opt for translation decisions more typical of what might be expected in professional subtitling.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66103876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Along with the suspension of disbelief and credibility, expected goals for a dubbed version would seem to be authenticity of language, including not only words and discourse but also elements of delivery, such as accent and prosody (as a part of character portrayal); in short, a well-rounded, strategic proposal that can complement the picture at all times. The result of this study is that, compared to their AVT versions, much more care seems to go into reflecting the nuances of real voices and orality in the source texts, especially when famous and historical figures of the recent past are involved. In this respect, much work still needs to be done, for criticism to be fair and awareness of intervening factors greater, both in terms of professional quality and in academic research. Examples are drawn mainly from the portrayal of real historical figures from the United Kingdom, especially Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II and their representation in fiction and historical biopics.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66103346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examine the presence and functions of identities and gendered roles in the series. Unorthodox tells the story of Esther Saphiro (Esty), a young Jewish woman who flees from her country and leaves her ultra-Orthodox community, with very strict rules and traditional gender roles. We explore the connections between the gendered roles of the main characters, their cultural or social contexts, and, especially, the role of third languages in the series (Yiddish, German, Russian, and Hebrew). As it is a German-American production, we consider English as its main language (L1) because the story is directed to mainstream Western audiences. The role of third languages (L3) is very relevant in depicting the intercultural encounters in the series. Yiddish is the most prominent L3 followed by German and a little Russian and Hebrew. The most recurrent functions of L3-instances are signaling otherness and character portrayal, where Yiddish and German are used. Hebrew is used for ceremonies, prayers and songs, and it portrays Jewish characters in their traditional contexts. We pay special attention to songs, as rich L3 instances, where there is interaction of L3 function, gender significance, translation strategies, and narrative roles. The translation of songs shows the relative importance of conveying the word or the music. Finally, the identification of third languages is not marked in the subtitling of either songs or dialogues; therefore, language diversity can be hindered for audiences not discriminating between the various languages.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66103419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since we are dealing with audiovisual products, in any full account of the story, the image must be considered as an essential factor affecting the audiences’ interpretation of the show. The article analyzes how multilingualism is rendered in its Spanish version and shows that different translation solutions may change how each character’s identity is perceived. We found that the main four languages of the series (English, Yiddish, German, and Hebrew) are used to convey different personal and social identities to each character. Besides, linguistic choices between Yiddish and English show the evolution of the main character towards freedom. Although multilingualism is hardly present in the visual channel, cultural references conveyed through images help the viewer to follow key shifts in the story.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66103479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analysis of three press releases published online shows, that the terms “interpreting” and “translation” are used quite often to describe any form of communication occurring between two languages, rather than a profession, even if no third, mediating party is present. This may suggest low social consciousness regarding liaison interpreting and a need to consider the public image during the professionalisation process of this occupation.","PeriodicalId":36042,"journal":{"name":"Miedzy Oryginalem a Przekladem","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49475817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
