This paper distinguishes that the stakeholders most directly involved in this process are researchers, academic publishers, and university libraries. Whereas researchers and libraries often submit and disseminate work for free, academic publishing companies monetize their product. In this instance, the product is research, and the clientele is university libraries, who are coerced into multiyear contracts with publishers, often costing in the upwards of millions, to tens of millions of dollars. With university library budgets squeezed thin, it could be advisable to seek alternative accessible sources, beyond that of the costly subscription journal. This exploratory study surveyed 110 academic professionals to investigate how these users engage with scholarly communication and use open access (OA) resources. The study found that though outcomes of commercialized academic publishing have disrupted the transfer of research, users are hesitant to rely solely upon OA sources, despite the perception that they are of equal value to traditional commercial sources. The author concludes that in order for research to be transferred fairly between all actors of scholarly communication, that both researchers and university libraries must strive to make OA resources commonplace.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2021.1880516","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42299833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With each new development, misinformation about COVID-19 proliferated, sowing confusion and uncertainty about everything from causes to cures. In response, two librarians designed The COVID-19 Misinformation Challenge, a weeklong program aimed at discerning coronavirus fact from fiction on social media, in the news, and in academic publishing. Based on the number of program participants and their overwhelmingly positive feedback, the Challenge proved to be popular, fun, and educational.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2020.1861161","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48329658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There exist multiple unsettled aspects of visual design on library websites, prompting a need to critically examine and update current design practices. This paper presents aspects of layout, graphics, and navigation where no consensus for an effective design allowing students to interact with a library website has been achieved among librarians. It suggests areas of research whose investigation would strengthen the design of academic library webpages, and make them both more usable and more esthetically pleasing to a student population.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2019.1702133","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43795877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chat transcripts were coded according to four question categories: Reference, Borrowing, Technology Help, and Directional. Chat transcripts were also coded into more specific question types within each of the categories. Results showed that a high proportion of library users asked reference questions in the discovery service, regardless of whether they used a proactive invitation or a static link. Results also showed that library users were less likely to ask borrowing, technology help, and directional questions via the discovery service. Within the Reference category, a higher proportion of users tended to ask for help finding known items when they clicked on the “Ask Us” link. Conversely, a higher proportion of the proactive chat questions involved searching on a topic. These findings support the inclusion of proactive chat in search interfaces and provide valuable information about knowledge and skills that chat staff should possess.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2019.1643435","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41429614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, the study identified the types of cloud computing adopted for delivering Web-based services; examined the user-friendliness of cloud computing; identified the benefits of cloud computing; examined the ease-of-use of cloud computing and established the relationship between ease-of-use and user-friendliness and adoption of cloud computing for delivering Web-based services; and identify the challenges encountered by academic libraries in their adoption of cloud computing for delivering Web-based services. The study adopted a survey design using a sample of thirty-five (35) librarians drawn through the total enumeration method from three universities in Ilorin, Kwara State. Data were collected through a questionnaire and collected data were analyzed using frequency count and percentages. The hypotheses of the study were tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The findings demonstrate that respondents confirmed the ease-of-use and user-friendliness of cloud computing for delivering Web-based services in academic libraries. The findings also reveal that cloud computing is flexible and not vulnerable to computer breakdowns and loss of data; easy to integrate existing work with the cloud-based services, saves time, and enables the accomplishment of tasks more quickly. The study recommends based on the findings that academic libraries should be provided with a reliable source of powers as backup against epileptic power supply with a strong Internet connection and broad bandwidth to further support the adoption of cloud computing in academic libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2020.1837326","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45917425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though articles from these two information professions are mostly positive on social media, various journalism articles pointed out the information credibility issue on social media while no librarianship article did that. Both formal and informal communication styles have benefits and drawbacks that may affect patron satisfaction. Consequently, it may be difficult for chat operators to decide how to communicate with users, and for chat service managers to decide if communication style should be part of a service’s training and policies. This article reports on a study of chat transcripts from a collaborative chat reference service in Ontario, Canada. We compared operator communication style with users’ willingness to return, and included user and query type as moderating variables. The study used two samples: 299 randomly selected interactions and 217 interactions with negative or neutral exit survey responses. Chi square tests of independence showed a significant relationship between communication style and willingness to return in the dissatisfied sample, but not the random sample. There was a significant relationship between informality and willingness to return for faculty members and for research questions but only in the dissatisfied sample. We conclude that an operator’s choice to communicate either more formally or informally will not make users more satisfied, but it can help avoid leaving them dissatisfied, especially for faculty members and during research-intensive questions.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2019.1628157","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48085165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A wide range of tutorial types cater to different learning styles and feature varying levels of interactivity. In this study, students and faculty reported experiences using two types of tutorials teaching basic search strategies—an interactive tutorial, and a video tutorial. Although both groups favored the video, faculty were split about which tutorial they would rather assign, a discrepancy suggesting questions about how tutorial developers should balance user preferences with learning needs. These findings provide valuable insights for librarians and instructional designers considering creating information literacy tutorials.","PeriodicalId":35377,"journal":{"name":"Internet Reference Services Quarterly","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10875301.2018.1427171","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41323957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
