This study is aimed at investigating the linguistic and cognitive-pragmatic aspects of Anglicisms in media language and media texts in Kazakhstan. The leading methods of investigating this issue are the literary method, the method of cognitive linguistics, methods of classification, induction, deduction, generalisation, and comparison of cultural, socio-psychological and philological approaches, which will help to identify the influence and function of Anglicisms in Kazakhstan. The authors of this study have performed a detailed analysis of the literature and the content, clarifying the characteristics and features of this phenomenon. The study generalises the main inherent features of borrowings in the Kazakh language, describes the functions of borrowings in media texts, demonstrates certain aspects of the communicative potential of Anglicisms, considers the specific features of the influence of these words and phrases on the development of linguistic personality, describes the topics and situations of the use of English borrowings in the media of Kazakhstan, diagnoses the number of these words in media texts, and demonstrates the prospects for the development of this vocabulary in the media resources of Kazakhstan.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":"0 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42861115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These adjectives have a semantically intensifying function as in for example Hektik pur and they constitute a small closed list (brutal, light, pur, total, satt). The central aim of this paper consists in presenting and evaluating different proposals for the translation of this particular German construction into Italian on the basis of an empirical analysis of concrete examples. Furthermore, the article analyses how the construction under study is treated in current German grammatical writing, discusses its syntax and offers some novel theses on its semantics.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48002073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the portrayal of women in Jordanian proverbial expressions. It attempts to answer the following question: How are women portrayed in Jordanian folk proverbs? To this end, seventy-eight Jordanian proverbs related to women were collected through interviews and from published folklore books. Employing thematic analysis, the data were classified into eight categories, namely, women as wives, unmarried women, women as mothers, women as daughters, widowed women, divorced women, women as relatives-in-law and women in general. The analysis also shows that women are represented both negatively and positively in all categories. However, the negative image of women depicted in the proverbs exceeds the positive one. Based on the conclusions, some future research was suggested.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43722694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis focuses on the question of how translators convey to the target language readers the specialised language of the technology of bell-founding (campanology), which is embedded in the poem. To answer this question, first the specialised vocabulary in the poem will be identified, after which the translators’ paratextual comments on the technical complexity and the specialised language will be examined. Taking the German term “Schwalch” as an example, the difficulty of conveying specialised language within a poetic context will then be discussed.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":"68 1","pages":"19 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42697003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The researchers selected the website of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) as a case study. The English version of the IFRC website is meticulously set off against its Arabic counterpart. This study draws on Olvera-Lobo and Castillo-Rodríguez’s (2019) suggested framework with regards to the linguistic and cultural aspects of localised websites. The study concludes that the recommendations related to linguistic and cultural aspects of website localisation presented by Olvera-Lobo and Castillo-Rodríguez (2019) have proven to be valuable in assessing the localised versions of INGOs as they cover a wide range of facets needed by the target readerships.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":"68 1","pages":"96 - 112"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46035827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Context-embedded phonological memory (CEPM) is a product of the interaction between semantic and phonological memory, and becomes a component of interpreters’ professional expertise because of their attentional control. Four groups with different years of interpretation experience were asked to recall texts with distinct CEPM features. CEPM and its retrieval process were measured using WordSmith 6.0 and My Screen Recorder. Professional interpreters retrieved a high amount of CEPM (39.6 %), but were outperformed by interpreter trainees (40.52 %), roughly 15 years younger on average. Group difference was statistically significant only between the groups with interpretation experience and the teacher group. Only professionals’ performance in retrieving highly abstract information and the proper names and numbers in a context suggests that professionals are skilled at exploiting phonological information to create an elaborate semantic network.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":"68 1","pages":"75 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41992716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the postmodern society, scientific knowledge and technical competence of experts are increasingly depreciated while the ordinary knowledge of non-specialists is experiencing an unprecedented valorisation. Given the exponential growth of the artificial intelligence techniques and the reduction of the translator's competence to the mastery of digital tools, these phenomena are amplifying and aggravating the crisis of meta-narratives, especially as regards translators. The result is imbalance in the discursive space of expertise which highlights the need to define expert competence, and – in particular – the translator's singular competence which is not exclusively linguistic. The author proposes an exhaustive analysis of the causes of the disqualification of the expert translator and suggests some ways to build a meta-narrative that would give the translator legitimacy both in terms of cognitive competence and in terms of social recognition.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":"68 1","pages":"58 - 74"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46162991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It therefore starts with determining the features of legal languages that are potentially responsible for jeopardizing the comprehensibility of legal texts. Next, it discusses the purposes (functions) these features serve in legal communication. By indicating a number of similarities between the legal and the everyday communication, the paper attempts to refute the criticisms of incomprehensibility in legal texts.","PeriodicalId":35136,"journal":{"name":"Lebende Sprachen","volume":"68 1","pages":"40 - 57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48057357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
