This article reviews the development of this term from linguistic, exegetical, and normative points of view. In Mishnaic Hebrew, מוכן and its negative form אינו מן המוכן are archaic forms derived through nominalization from Exod 16:5. This linguistic legacy, shared with the Damascus Document, went through a process of reconceptualization in Tannaitic law. While the term remained fixed, its normative consequences were further developed and מוכן became a pivotal concept in the Tannaitic laws of consumption and handling. This article is based on the hypothesis that the way that Arab politicians in the State of Israel use metaphor in their political discourse has unique rhetorical aspects that contribute to sharpening their message, as part of the larger goal of emphasizing the suffering of the Palestinian people and Arab-Israelis, and changing for the better the Israeli government's discriminatory patterns of action against them. Regina, who lost her husband (“one of the happiest days of her life,” the all-knowing narrator comments), reverts to her Polish name, Stefana, and turns “her back on forty-five years of living in Eretz Yisrael.” She recedes to the days of her youth in “a Poland which she re-created in her imagination.” “Proudly and punctiliously observing certain airs and graces, dressed in splendid clothes,” she begins to speak “Polish almost exclusively and reading only Polish books and newspapers and behaving as if she lived in Poland.” Having detached herself from the “stream of time” Stefana sinks into a “wintry silence and an obscure happiness,” uttering only a few necessary sentences, and usually in Polish. That is, while Judges 5 is rightly regarded a venerable relic of ancient Israelite song, it is also a distinctive exemplar of heroic poetry as found in a wide variety of traditions and periods, composed in any number of different languages. Thus, for example, as in other like poems, heroic values are dramatized and promoted in Judges 5 through often ironic contrastive characterizations of what is deemed praiseworthy and blameworthy behavior. Members of both societies engaged the folklore of Jewish communities in the diaspora, but they diverged in important ways. Since Jewish folklore studies developed separately in different places in Europe, the two Zionist societies were modelled on disparate scholarly traditions. Because of that, any attempt to purify their work from diasporic negotiations of Jewish folklore is bound to fail—they followed diasporic practices and diasporic ideals as to what Jewish folklore signified. However, in the face of the Shoah, both societies related to diasporic Jewish culture in different ways: the Jerusalem Institute turned to salvage traditions of Jewish communities from the Middle East, which were less affected by the atrocities of the Shoah. The Tel Aviv Yeda Am Society did not evade the Shoah, and in fact its leader Yom-Tov Lewinsky directed his attention to Jewish culture in Eastern Europe by adopting avant-garde techniques in his editorial practice. Both composers sought de-signification—either by eschewing ethnographic imports in the form of folk or liturgical music (Seter), or through violent deconstructions of seemingly opposing earmarks of Jews and Christians (Hajdu). Both works therefore disclose meaningful disharmonies. Hyun Chul Paul Kim has recently examined the Joseph novella as a diaspora narrative, concluding that its hybrid-identified hero conveys a unifying message of encouragement to Jews in the diaspora. However, Joseph contrasts with his father, Jacob, who is dour, fearful, lamenting, \"little and evil have been the days of my life\" (Gen 47:9). Joseph's brothers, too, perceive their existence in Egypt as precarious (50:15). These varying perspectives contribute to the text's possessing what Mikhail Bakhtin labeled polyphony—many-voicedness—and heteroglossia—different-voicedness. This paper applies elements of Bakhtinian narrative theory and space theory to explore the contrasts in Genesis 45–50 between Jacob, Joseph, and his brothers in relation to departure, dependence, and death. It also explores how such issues may reflect the debates and dilemmas of post-exilic diaspora communities. Hoffmann views language as a constant failure, a guaranteed miscommunication, and employs a double interpellation throughout the book in order to get his readers to experience language as such. By addressing the readers in the second-person, the first interpellation encourages identification with the heroine's addressees (her imagined friend Dolores and her son Michael). The second, which occurs at the end of the book and is facilitated by a dramatic shift in the plot, has been largely ignored by critics, who focus mainly on the sense of wonder produced by the text and therefore read each of the text's fragments separately. This interpellation shifts readers' perception not only of the heroine, but also of themselves and their reading process. The protagonist Joseph is captured by his brothers, trafficked into Egypt, and imprisoned. Subsequently, Joseph rises to a position of immense power because he is able to interpret Pharaoh's dreams as pertaining to a famine. The denouement of the Joseph narrative unfolds as this famine drives along the plot. It is only when Joseph's brothers become environmentally induced involuntary migrants to Egypt that the opportunity arises for them to reconcile with Joseph. Indeed, the famine even enables the final scheme by which Joseph gets his brother Benjamin and father Jacob to Egypt. In this article, recent research on how climate change and environmental factors impact migration decisions, how environmentally induced migrant communities determine where to migrate, and how such communities do and do not integrate with the host populations in their new settings is employed to analyze Genesis 37–47, with particular focus on chapters 41–47. Fresh interpretations of problematic passages emerge from this reading strategy.
