The main\u0000 goal of the app would be to encourage learners to have real-life\u0000 conversations with Icelandic speakers by accomplishing conversational\u0000 missions. In the first stage of development, a qualitative deep-method needs\u0000 study in the form of interviews was conducted with 19 migrants from 14\u0000 different countries, who permanently live in Iceland. Results indicated that\u0000 learners have five core needs for practising spoken language: connection,\u0000 confidence, clarity, growth, and convenience. Based on different learning\u0000 styles and confidence in speaking rather than language ability, three main\u0000 learner profiles were indicated: ‘diving in’, ‘learning with caution’ and\u0000 ‘dipping a toe’. Both the learners’ needs and the profiles would drive the\u0000 design of the learning app to personalise and maximise the learner\u0000 experience with practising spoken L2. This human-centred study approach\u0000 suggests an innovative strategy in designing a learning app for practising\u0000 L2 in a specific language and culture environment.

This paper describes a study in an Irish university which\u0000 explored the nature and extent of language learners’ existing use of\u0000 smartphones for informal learning purposes through a survey, a case study,\u0000 and a group interview. The results showed that firstly, smartphones played\u0000 only a limited and tangential role in their language learning, and secondly,\u0000 that learners had narrow perceptions of what ‘actual, proper study’ entails,\u0000 demonstrated by their overwhelming preference for more traditional language\u0000 learning resources and practices. The paper finishes by making suggestions\u0000 regarding how smartphones can be integrated into the language classroom, at\u0000 both third and second level, to help broaden learner perceptions of what\u0000 language study is, and consequently, allow smartphones to play a more\u0000 significant role in their learning practices.

Lack of exposure and availability of online\u0000 materials for learning Icelandic as an L2 may affect what skills children\u0000 can practise at home. This study represents 32 children aged one to 16, all\u0000 of whom practise Icelandic (L2) at home.
