Indeed, given their flexibility and versatility, digital tools and\u0000 the Internet can render teacher-student interactions dynamic. Among the\u0000 necessary professional skills and strategies for online synchronous\u0000 teaching, this paper focuses on the specific dimensions of affective\u0000 competences and the social need to maintain a climate of comfort during\u0000 one-to-one online tutoring interactions. We focus on a particular social\u0000 phenomenon that is strongly linked to emotions – facework (Goffman, 1967).\u0000 Applied to computer assisted language learning, we analyse how this social\u0000 practice unfolds in an interactional environment where the perception of the\u0000 other is mediated by a videoconferencing platform. We noted four different\u0000 types of facework triggering situations: lexical breakdowns, private\u0000 anecdote tellings, overlaps, and interruption of learner reflection time.\u0000 Our multimodal analysis of facework reveals the frequent use of the smile as\u0000 a mimicry semiotic resource and highlights the phenomenon of interactional\u0000 synchrony.

To facilitate\u0000 learning under the COVID-19 pandemic, instructors and learners had to\u0000 speedily adapt to a ‘new normal’ of intense videoconferencing online\u0000 learning. However, did this rapid implementation of online learning\u0000 negatively impact students’ privacy? The findings presented in this\u0000 reflective paper suggest that despite initial concerns, students who\u0000 participated in the research exhibited low-level concerns regarding the\u0000 impact of videoconferencing software on their online privacy. The aim of the project was to help\u0000 Spanish-speaking students develop their Intercultural Communicative\u0000 Competence (ICC). Students carried out asynchronous discussions focusing on\u0000 two cultural topics in groups of four through the social network MeWe and\u0000 participated in synchronous Zoom sessions in pairs. After receiving training on Google voice typing in\u0000 Google Docs, 17 English as a Second Language (ESL) students carried out two\u0000 ASR-based writing tasks over a two-hour period. After the treatment,\u0000 participants filled in a TAM-informed survey and participated in\u0000 semi-structured interviews to measure their perceptions based on the target\u0000 criteria. Findings indicate positive perceptions of ASR as a writing tool in\u0000 terms of usefulness (language learning potential) and ease of use (e.g.\u0000 user-friendly voice commands). This paper discusses electronics students’ acquisition of\u0000 specific vocabulary as related to the free game-based collaborative platform\u0000 Check Your Smile (CYS), which is entirely devoted to learning LSP\u0000 terminology. CYS aggregates various types of games that automatically\u0000 generate individualized game plays, drawing upon a collaboratively\u0000 constructed multilingual dictionary. Several types of data were\u0000 collected: semi-structured interviews with teachers and learners, and\u0000 observation of collaborative activities in the language classroom (video\u0000 recordings, research log, observation notes, etc.). The case studies show\u0000 different collaborative activities, which fall into three categories:\u0000 coordination, articulation, and production. The analysis suggests that many\u0000 factors can have an impact on collaboration between students, and this paper\u0000 focuses on one in particular: digital tools. The findings revealed that\u0000 digital tools can support collaboration if they meet the specific needs of\u0000 the task (synchronous collaboration, asynchronous collaboration, or no\u0000 collaboration) and its accessibility for the pupils (one tool for the group,\u0000 one tool per student).
