Didenko","doi":"10.29025/2079-6021-2023-1-126-141","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29025/2079-6021-2023-1-126-141","url":null,"abstract":"Based on the material of value judgments contained in the narrator D-503’s diary entries, the publication carries out the semiotic reconstruction of models of ideologically incompatible societies, traces the possibilities of transition from one model to another model as a way of developing humanity in the author’s imaginary reality. As the research methodology, A.J. Greimas’s concepts of the actanial scheme and the semiotic square are used, which recognize the importance of the dichotomy of polar linguistic signs in the process of interpreting their semantics. The author analyzes the relations of contrarity established between the models of impeccable and imperfect (ancient and oppositional) societies based on the extraction of deep meanings from the surface narrative structure. It is established that each of these models, functioning as the semiotic construct, is filled with specific semantics against the background of the opposition of another model. The concept of an actanial scheme turns out to be relevant when identifying the specifics of the narrator’s assessment of social structure models. The antonymic content of these schemes is analyzed based on the Benefactor and ancient ancestors’ position. The holders of these positions change the actanial roles of the subject and the antisubject. A multiple interpretation of the semiotic square of the Benefactor’s impeccable society is given as a formed community of people against the background of the opposition of the model of a formless society, assuming both a positive and negative perspective of development. Accordingly, these models are investigated in terms of positive and negative deixis, as well as implicative and suppositional relations. Relevant / irrelevant strategies of transition from one model to another model are traced, which can be either straight-line or assume an intermediate stage. The concept of the semiotic square underlies the analysis of the development of models of societies on the dystopian narrative historical axis. The ideas of models reflecting the immediate period of the narrative and potential future events, as well as the imagined past, are systematized. The article is based on the materials of the Chinese English Learners Corpus (CELC) and the combined materials of the BROWN and the written British National Corpus (BNC) for studying the vocabulary co-occurrence of the node word “family” from the point of view of collocation, colligation, semantic preference, and semantic prosody. The differences between Chinese and Western family cultures are revealed from the perspective of critical discourse analysis and the use of a horizontal combination of vocabulary relevant to the semiotic field of family. The study exemplifies the significant differences between Chinese learners and English native speakers in the choice and the use of core collocations in the minimal context of the family-related vocabulary. The conducted examination of the use of the node word “family” and its collocations in the Chinese English Learners Corpus compared to the combined English native speakers corpus in terms of semantic preference and semantic prosody demonstrates the most significant differences in understanding of the related concept as observed through the most common collocations. The article demonstrates the efficiency of the critical discourse analysis use in combination with the methods of corpus linguistics for the purpose of validation and verification of the conclusions regarding the content of the semiotic fields, as exemplified on the basis of the semiotic field of the concept FAMILY. The specifics of understanding composite metaphors, which describe the elements of the sphere of non-material world, is studied on the material of scientific and popular science texts in German. The problem is important today because of the existing linguistic interest to the processes of generation and understanding of speech. On the base of four-dimensional integration theory developed by J. Fauconnier and M. Turner the paper describes an algorithm for the interaction of mental spaces that provide understanding of complex words (composites). In the article is used the method of modeling that involves the definitional analysis, as well as methods of generalization of concepts, comparison and synthesis. The theoretical significance of the article is determined by its contribution to the solution of methodological problems of the study of inferential knowledge in the field of scientific communication; of practical value are the results concerning the principles of schematization of the process of understanding, which can be used in the disciplines of the cognitive orientation. The specificity of understanding of complex words in a scientific text is the combination in the integrated mental space (blend) of two initial spaces: the first is the basis of metaphorical transfer; it correlates with knowledge about material objects familiar to a person; the second creates the perspective of understanding these objects. The total generic mental space is a link connecting the initial spaces; it is characterized by the inclusion of knowledge about a material object within a certain subject / professional area. The result of metaphorical rethinking and modification of the total generic space is a blend – the new knowledge adapted to the conditions of professional communication. A psycho- and sociolinguistic experiment, as well as the data obtained through a direct questionnaire carried out during the primary study of the mechanisms behind the linguistic barrier experienced by Congolese students from three universities (UNIKIN, UPC and Bel Campus) trying to use English, allows identifying not only the dominant use areas for the native and international languages in the DRC, yet also the respondents’ attitude to the need of knowing foreign languages. In order to create a representative sample, a survey was conducted among each group of students selected randomly, while the sample concerned only three schools (Humanities, Economics and Medicine) within the universities mentioned above. The sociolinguistic analysis conducted therein, served as the basis for detecting the key factors behind semiotic systems conflict in the parallel usage of the competing language systems pairs (local vs. English/French): 1) gender, 2) age, 3) status. The language-and-culture barrier in case of a parallel employment of the host and the invasive language can be eliminated while learning a foreign language relying on a familiar language system. This approach, though, is not accepted by the majority of the respondents (over 90% of males and about 85% of females), whereas preference was towards semiosis models of the international language system (French or English). The intersection of semiotic spaces and a free switch between the language systems serving them was to be observed in the groups aged 18-24 (about 40%) mainly at the University of Kinshasa, and only among a small number of the respondents falling within the age group of 25-35 (12%) at the two other universities. The relevance of the study is determined, in particular, by the fact that the specifics of the perception of the advertising message, including the reduced attention of recipients to the advertising text, become the cause of provocative creative decisions, which are based on a deep analysis of consumer behavior, their habits and stereotypes. The authors note that in the professional activities of advertisers, the work with ideological and cultural codes is carried out in two ways: the advertising message is based on existing stereotypical mental attitudes or contradicts them. The material of Benetton brand advertising texts through semiotic analysis examines the company’s communication policy, built on a provocative appeal to cultural and ideological semiotic codes. With the help of trigger messages and visual images built on the use of idiologmes, religiogemes, mythologemes, culturemes, Benetton advertisers have created a semiotic basis for identifying the brand that is relevant to the general public. It is also noted that as a result, the brand has developed its own acutely social direction, which has become one of the main channels of communication with potential consumers of Benetton products. With the help of the social coloring of communications, non-standard solutions and the use of the laws of semiotics, the brand in question was able to achieve important economic and communication goals - to ensure differentiation against the background of competitors, to increase the loyalty of the target audience and its purchasing activity. The research material was more than 50 multi-code advertising messages - videos, as well as texts of printed and outdoor advertising. The aim of the study is to consider the secondary nomination in the aspect of interpretive representation, projected on the implementation of negative evaluative focus, and as a result leading to a communicative conflict. It was found that modification of the systemically fixed categorical meaning of language units, metaphorical, metonymic and metaphtonymic modeling, conceptual comparison and non-prototypical compliment lead to interpretive representation. The potential of these ways of implementing secondary functions is variable. If metaphor, metonymy, metaphthonymy and conceptual comparison can be used to form a positive assessment of a person, a non-prototypical compliment is always interpreted as a negative evaluation. As a result of the modification of the categorical meaning, not only the evaluation, but also the objective situation can be represented by non-prototypical means. Taking into account the results obtained, a scheme was modeled for the implementation of the secondary functions of language units as a way of representing a negative evaluation of a person. The method of conceptual analysis, the method of cognitive modeling and the method of prototypical semantics were used as the main research methods. It has been established that the use of language units in the secondary function reflects the dynamic processes in the semiotic space associated with the anthropocentric approach to language studies and the dynamics of human perception. To ensure conflict-free communication, it is advisable to predict cases of negative understanding of the secondary functions of language units and avoid their use. The prospect of this study is to consider the secondary functions of language units in order to eliminate cognitive dissonance in communication on the material of other languages. The English-language theological texts published in the theological journals “The American Journal of Biblical Theology” and “The Bible Magazine” have served as the research material. The starting methodological premise of the research is the idea that in the structure of metaphor there is a metaphorical core with main and metaphorical periphery additional metaphorical load. Based on the results of a practical analysis of factual material, the authors emphasize the weight of metaphor in these texts and highlight metaphorical models built on the principle of X is Y, i.e. based on the likening of two phenomena due to the predication of phenomenon X properties of phenomenon Y. The article presents a comparative analysis of two studies of religious metaphor carried out by the authors in 2015 and 2022, and also contains quantitative data representing the frequency of models of religious metaphor in the selection of texts and their partial verbalizers, acting as its core and periphery. The authors come to the conclusion that metaphor in religious discourse acts as an effective means of influencing the addressee, is characterized by dynamism and is conditioned by different extralinguistic factors. The dominance of the religious metaphor of positive evaluation in comparison with the negatively marked metaphor is proved, while the key part-of-speech verbalizers of both types of metaphors are, in the first case, nouns, verbs that make up the metaphorical core, and adjectives that represent the metaphorical periphery. The purpose of the present paper is to study the semiotic basis of the interaction of various discourses within the media discourse. The study was conducted on the material of media texts – the texts of articles posted on the website of The Guardian newspaper. During the study, methods of discourse analysis, semiotic analysis, methods of observation and description were used. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the inclusion of signs of other discourses into the media discourse in order to represent a certain event leads to interaction between discourses, which manifests itself in the forms of interdiscursivity and polydiscursivity. The polydiscursivity of media discourse results in a multifaceted presentation and analysis of the situation described in the media text; the combination of signs of different discourses within the media discourse leads to the representation of a combined situation in it. The specificity of interdiscursivity lies in the fact that as a result of the use of signs of another discourse in the media discourse, a certain everyday situation becomes part of the media situation, a participant in which – a journalist – simultaneously performs the functions of a participant in the everyday situation; at the same time, the information channel, which is part of the media situation, is used to transmit specific everyday information, and not information about socio-political, economic and other events. The author concludes that most often the content of modern textbooks does not correspond to the classical idea of the concept of rhetoric, but duplicates various humanitarian subjects. The reason for this state of affairs is the lack of the necessary number of specialists in rhetoric. If a philologist is assigned to teach rhetoric, classes are usually filled with tasks on the culture of speech. If rhetoric is transferred to specialized departments (legal, economic, etc.), it is replaced by an analysis of certain aspects of future activities (and not speech) of students. If the actors take up the rhetoric, all its content is reduced to the stage of utterance. An important indicator of an unprofessional approach to rhetoric in all such situations is the availability of tasks on aspects not considered in the theoretical part of the relevant paragraph, as well as the replacement of a systematic and consistent presentation of the material with all kinds of “tips” and “memos”. A professional textbook is always based on a single scientific concept, which is reflected both in the content (the author is not distracted by the message of irrelevant information) and in the composition (the information is arranged in a natural logical sequence). The second feature of such a textbook is a strict orientation to a certain audience: the author consciously selects information, and also offers exercises and tasks that help to form professionally significant skills of the addressee. Forensic fiction texts making use of precedent phenomena as efficient tools of encoding meaning are of special interest. The research is done within the framework of the theory of linguacultural types, discursive research and the theory of precedence. The relevance of the article is due to the interest of modern linguistics in the precedent phenomena studied in the functional and cognitive aspects. Significant features of linguacultural type are wide recognition, typicality and precedence. The focus is on English and American detective discourse. The research methods applied in this study were method of continuous sampling, semantic analysis, the methods of discursive and contextual analysis. This study seeks to investigate the precedent features of masculine linguacultural type “private detective”, represented by the fictional private eye Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist of Arthur Conan Doyle. The task is to define the types of the precedent phenomena with the help of which the precedent feature of the cultural type “private detective” are actualizes in the English language detective discourse. The material includes fiction, cinema and cartoon genres. The author systematizes the repertoire of the precedent phenomena of the English detective discourse, singles out types, identifies the source domains.
