Thus, as the embodiment of the fulfilment of the citizens’ rights, the state creates policies that are applicable to all components of the society regarding education. For early childhood education (ECE), in particular, the government has created a more flexible basic policy for early childhood education, thus providing people with the opportunity to participate in its implementation. This is also seen from the government’s effort in dividing the institutional forms into Formal and Non-formal ECE, thus the access to service to ECE is better reachable by everyone. Although there have been regulations on ECE in Indonesia, there are several policies that are incongruent with the practices on the field, such as the implementation and the students. Besides, the involvement of other parties in regulating early childhood education causes policies to overlap in its implementation. Based on the aforementioned, this article aims to provide an overview on early childhood education policies in Indonesia. By using literature study method regarding this critical policy analysis of early childhood education in Indonesia, this article is expected to provide a clear description on the reason behind the existence of early childhood education in Indonesia, including the involvement of other factors that support its policy making process.","PeriodicalId":337757,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Early Childhood Education (ICECE 2020)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130348470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phenomenography study design was used to investigate and reveal use of cognitive apprenticeship by involving 12 parents and nine classroom teachers who were sampled purposely because of their stake in the level of education. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions [FGDs] to teachers and parents respectively in Konawa district. Thematic content analysis obeying three-steps—open coding, axial coding and selective coding—introduced by Strauss and Corbin (1990) was applied. Findings reveal that classroom teachers differed with parents on strategies they used to enhance a child's problem solving skills. However, work environment, policy-related issues, and child-related issues impacted classroom teachers’ on their initiatives in nurturing children to become good problem solvers; while economic status, lack of parental knowledge and diseases affected parents’ initiatives on the same. The study concludes that development of children with authentic problems requires a working environment as well as policy specification be improved to achieve it.","PeriodicalId":337757,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Early Childhood Education (ICECE 2020)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130121560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Indonesia, millions of children stayed home while playgrounds were closed nationwide to prevent further spread of the virus. Past research explains the importance of playground visits for children’s play and learning development, yet studies on ways to shift playground experiences and their benefits to online or other media are very rare. This paper will cover the advantages of playing in playgrounds through theoretical approach as well as offer several strategies to maintain this experience online during pandemic. Challenges, and different ways to solve them will also be discussed based on evidence of implementing those strategies by AEON Fantasy Indonesia, a Japan-based playground operator. Furthermore, not only for playground operators, recommendations featured in this study are also applicable for children, caregivers, and child development practitioners.","PeriodicalId":337757,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Early Childhood Education (ICECE 2020)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123826793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children are meaning-making beings. As young architects of their worlds, they attempt to make sense of their reality through their immediate experiences or the comfort derived from the pages of a book. Leveraging on a research project that examines diverse picturebooks that explore socially and culturally sensitive issues for inclusive practices, this paper introduces participants to a range of multicultural and international picturebooks and will discuss the significance of having access to these titles.","PeriodicalId":337757,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Early Childhood Education (ICECE 2020)","volume":"26 15","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131491493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
