Identifying MT Errors for Higher-Quality Second Language Text 识别高质量第二语言文本的 MT 错误

{"title":"Identifying MT Errors for Higher-Quality Second Language Text","authors":"Kayo Tsuji","doi":"10.4018/ijtial.335899","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4018/ijtial.335899","url":null,"abstract":"Second language education has arrived at a phase of proposing effective uses of neural machine translation (NMT). Previous research has explored various aspects of post-editing and suggested that it is crucial to manually edit NMT output to produce better target language (TL) texts. The purpose of this study was to identify NMT errors in output text, so that Japanese TL (English) learners can recognize what to be aware of. The study targeted the NMT output from Japanese-written academic reports, pre-edited by 73 Japanese students with intermediate TL proficiency. The data was analysed and primarily lexical and grammatical issues were detected and systematically classified. Results showed that the use of inappropriate TL vocabulary was the most frequent error, followed by misuse or lack of determiners. Some could be avoided in a pre-editing phase by carefully choosing precise source-language (SL) vocabulary or reducing SL ambiguity, while others required a deeper understanding of TL syntactic rules or the nuance of TL vocabulary. TL Learners need to raise their awareness of these NMT errors for effective post-editing.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"36 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139532230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It collected and analyzed 2,774 articles on pronouns from Web of Science (WoS) categories related to linguistics or language using CiteSpace, a citation analysis tool. This paper examined the intellectual framework and patterns of pronoun research through co-citation analysis and identified the most productive journals, influential articles, intellectual base, and trending topics in pronoun studies. The main intellectual base includes anaphora resolution, referring expression, grammatical category, eye movement, subject expression, and thematic analysis. Trending topics comprise studies on English pronouns, acquisition of pronouns, and information cues such as syntax and discourse that affect the comprehension of pronouns. The results reveal the complexity and diversity of pronoun processing. This research contributes to the ongoing discussion and debate on pronoun studies, helps researchers understand the state of pronoun research, and offers suggestions for relevant future research.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"328 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138996752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Growing attention has been paid to the research on inferential processing during text reading, with numerous papers on this topic published in recent decades. To gain a bibliographic landscape of inferential processing during discourse reading, co-citation analysis, cluster interpretations, and citation bursts analysis were conducted via CiteSpace based on the data from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection of Thomson Reuters from 2001 to 2021. The results reveal that (1) reading comprehension and working memory are fairly popular topics in recent decades; (2) research exploring predictive inferences, bridging inferences, and causal inferences have been paid much attention; and (3) predictive inference, eye movement, and listening comprehension may be attractive in future studies.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122201934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How Literal is the 1972 Translation Into English of J.L. Borges' Historia Universal de la Infamia? 博尔赫斯1972年的《世界通史》英译本的字面意思如何?

{"title":"How Literal is the 1972 Translation Into English of J.L. Borges' Historia Universal de la Infamia?","authors":"M. Sánchez","doi":"10.4018/ijtial.323801","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4018/ijtial.323801","url":null,"abstract":"This article analyzes A Universal History of Infamy, the 1972 translation into English of Historia Universal de la Infamia (hereinafter, HUI). While assessing this translation's degree of literality, the authors also characterize how the translation project at stake evolved. Initially, J.L. Borges would have planned to rewrite the book in English (in 1968, with the help of his translator Norman di Giovanni). He later, in 1971, contented himself with attenuating the baroque style of the original prose and ultimately gave up all collaboration. The bulk of the translation was then left to di Giovanni. Textual analysis, combined with data on the translation/publication context of some HUI compositions, allow the authors to explore the hypothesis that the higher fidelity of certain translations is linked to a possible Borges collaboration. While sticking to his overall goal of making the prose of the original flow, di Giovanni's translation often recomposed sentences and incurred interpretation errors.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122271135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gao, Kexin Zhang","doi":"10.4018/ijtial.323448","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4018/ijtial.323448","url":null,"abstract":"This study explores the impacts of directionality on disfluency of sight translation (ST) between English and Chinese. The author adopts four disfluency indicators, namely silent pause (SP), filled pause (FP), repetition (Rt), and repair (Rr) to answer: (1) What are the features of disfluency in ST in two directions? (2) What is the correlation between directionality and disfluency in ST? The results show: (1) The incidence of SP is the highest in both E-C and C-E ST, followed by FP, then Rr, and finally Rt; many student interpreters do the most basic pre-task preparation poorly, leading to a large number of SPs; many SPs coincide with respiration and those over 10 seconds occur only in E-C ST; (2) There are no statistically significant differences between E-C and C-E ST in terms of the four disfluency indicators. In other words, directionality exerts no significant effect on disfluency of student interpreters' ST.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124991539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The result of such expansion is diversification, leading to multiple interpretations of the term “translation studies.” Since the cultural turn in TS was proposed in 1990, the notion of what translation involves has been expanded. An increasing number of translation researchers are inviting us to expand the object of the field. The book represents the most recent discovery in cross-boundary translation studies. Recent research has emphasized the composing process and the effects of feedback, but few on L2 writers' engagement with feedback. Therefore, with the multi-draft approach, the research investigated two English majors' responses to peer and video feedback. First, from their first drafts and peer checklists, the author analyzed the salient problems of their multimodal texts. Then, the researcher explored how they respond to feedback form their drafts and interview responses. The findings suggest some problems including overuse of texts, visual disharmony, and “disconnection” from the audience. Besides, the study reveals a complex relationship among three engagement dimensions, manifested in interconnectedness and inconsistencies. Meanwhile, learner engagement with feedback is mediated by individual and contextual factors. The findings contribute insights into understanding L2 writers' engagement with feedback.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128810751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Translators' Take on Three Possible Typos in Jorge L. Borges' Story “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius” 博尔赫斯小说《Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius》中三种可能的错别字

Sánchez","doi":"10.4018/ijtial.319311","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4018/ijtial.319311","url":null,"abstract":"This article examines how translators tackled the problem given by three possible typos in Jorge Luis Borges' short story “Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius.” Translations to all major Western languages are considered. The translators' decisions are found to display great diversity. Some of them treat the textual changes in question as mere typos, while others incorporate the changes (be it partially, in full, or even in excess). Borges' role in altering the text can only be assessed indirectly as no hard evidence, such as corrected galley proofs or written accounts, is known to exist. The present findings allign well with Sánchez's complementary analysis of the context in which the three textual changes occur and how they indirectly impact the plot. In case they are not mere typos, the changes discussed here could obey Borges' decision to reintroduce a metaliterary element of surprise into the story.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121612432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Asian clients' voices have been under-researched. This paper examines the competence requirements that Asian clients look for when hiring translators. It discovers whether there are changes in translator competences expected by clients over time. To achieve the objectives, the Optimale survey was replicated. Analyses are made based on 64 Asian clients participating in the present study and the data from the Optimale survey. It was found that both groups attach greater importance to quality than to speed and put more emphasis on experience than on qualifications. Translators' awareness of professional ethics and standards is stressed. Technological competences are emphasized. When it comes to translation competence, both groups have similar expectations: translators' ability to produce good-quality work followed by their ability to render materials in one or more highly specialized domains and use of translation memory systems.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122734730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the analysis of the transitivity of the poem and its translations, it is found that there are 5 versions for the first line, 3 versions for the second, third and sixth lines, and 1 version for the fourth and fifth lines, in which the transitivity maintains a high consistency with the original poem. Spearman Correlation shows that there is a significant positive relationship of transitivity between the version by Watson and the original poem, and the translation by Watson is highly correlated with the transitivity of the original poem with the following coefficient, p = 0.890. This study can give clues to the study of poems and their translations of the transitivity processes, by exploring the differences of participants and circumstantial elements with the theoretical framework of functional grammar.","PeriodicalId":330063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Translation, Interpretation, and Applied Linguistics","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127631071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
