Firstly, it explores English as a foreign language (EFL) high school teachers’ practices of testing and washback in teaching reading comprehension. Secondly, their perceptions of its washback effects are scrutinized. Content analysis, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews were employed to collect data. Sixty teachers at some high schools in Can Tho City, Vietnam were contacted to answer the questionnaire. In the end, five of them were selected to take part in the interviews. The findings indicated that designing tests has a beneficial impact on reading for EFL learners in the areas of students' passion for reading, decreasing reading boredom, students' interest in reading text content, and students' development of thinking skills. This paper, therefore, examines the behavior of these tones in the attributive constructions in Ikhin, an Edoid language in South-South, Nigeria. The study observes that in Ikhin, the attribute of a noun (N) is indicated by post posing a modifier (M) after the noun. The normal order between a noun (N) and its modifier is therefore that the noun precedes its modifier. On the one hand, there is a construction marker ísὲ [ ̱̄ ]. At morpheme boundary in noun- noun construction, the high toned initial vowel of ísὲ  is deleted but its tone remains to perform a grammatical function. On the other hand, other kind of the construction in which the modifying element is not a noun, only a H tomorph is used as the construction marker. This H tomorph marks the relationship between a noun and its modifier. This paper tries to select as many Ci Pai names as possible, analyze and compare their English translation methods, so as to promote the standardization of Ci terms. It explores the phonological, semantic and syntactic features of the ‘s’ morpheme as used in our day-to-day conversations. The aim of this study is to highlight some salient qualities of the ‘-s’ morpheme. It is a known fact that the ‘-s’ morpheme is an inflectional morpheme; however, this study attempts to highlight more facts to show that beyond its inflectional role, it plays other linguistic roles that most times, the user of the English language undermines. Moreover, these other roles are nexus, because they connect the three areas of the English language: phonology, semantics and syntax. Samples of words are derived from different secondary sources and are analyzed phonologically, semantically and syntactically. The paper concludes that the ‘-s’ morpheme application in our daily written and oral expressions is not negligible. Cet article est une étude théorique linguistique des qualités uniques du morphème 's'. Il explore les caractéristiques phonologiques, sémantiques et syntaxiques du morphème « s » tel qu'il est utilisé dans nos conversations quotidiennes. L'objectif de cette étude est de mettre en évidence certaines qualités saillantes du morphème '-s'. C'est un fait connu que le morphème '-s'est un morphème flexionnel ; cependant, cette étude tente de mettre en évidence plus de faits pour montrer qu'au-delà de son rôle d'inflexion, il joue d'autres rôles linguistiques que la plupart du temps, l'utilisateur de la langue anglaise sape. De plus, ces autres rôles sont liés, car ils relient les trois domaines de la langue anglaise : la phonologie, la sémantique et la syntaxe. Des échantillons de mots sont dérivés de différentes sources secondaires et sont analysés phonologiquement, sémantiquement et syntaxiquement. The vowel inventory of Spanish varies greatly from the English vowel system, yet the two are not normally differentiated in instructional strategies. We focus primarily on the mispronunciation of vowels, as they are critical to verb morphology in Spanish, as well as their mispronunciation can lead to confusion between minimal pairs in Spanish (e.g., reino ‘kingdom’ vs. reno ‘reindeer’). Using the Corpus Oral de Español como Lengua Extranjera (ELE), we explored the most frequent types of mistakes produced by these learners in their pronunciation of Spanish vowels. Analysis showed that these mispronunciations included, but was not limited to, vowel reduction or vowel alternation. Moreover, the study concludes with an interpretation of plausible sources of this problem as well as discussing the role of vowel mispronunciations in L2 learner’s intelligibility.Este estudio se centra en la adquisición del sistema vocálico español por parte de estudiantes de L2 de habla inglesa. El inventario de vocales del español varía mucho del sistema de vocales del inglés, sin embargo, estas diferencias no se incluyen normalmente en las estrategias de instrucción. Wang","doi":"10.46827/ejals.v5i1.352","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46827/ejals.v5i1.352","url":null,"abstract":"Based on Halliday’s systemic functional context theory, this paper makes a contrastive analysis of the transitivity process, register variants, and text genre of the two English translations of Li Qingzhao’s “Slow Slow Song” from the three dimensions of cultural context, situational context, and co-text to explore the characteristics of the language expressions of the two translations. It is found that there are differences in the process of transitivity, register variants, and discourse genre between the two translations and the original text. This is a quasi-experimental study that lasted for 15 weeks with the participation of 30 university students and 2 university lecturers who have a lot of experience in reverse classroom teaching. Students participating in the study were divided into 2 groups, one group studied in a flipped classroom, and the other group followed the traditional model. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. In this study, participating students were tested for the same level of English placement for both groups. After 15 weeks, both groups did the final exams. The content of the tests had a similar difficulty. The study results showed that there were significant differences between the two research groups, the flipped learning study group had better results than the traditional group, and the flipped students felt enjoyable learning with this model. Results were found after interviews with 6 students in the flipped class. Asante","doi":"10.46827/ejals.v5i1.345","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46827/ejals.v5i1.345","url":null,"abstract":"<p>This corroborative study is based on research findings by Obeng Gyasi’s (1997) ‘An analysis of the linguistic situation in Ghana,’ and Akpanglo-Nartey & Akpanglo-Nartey’s, ‘Some Endangered Languages of Ghana’ (2012). Three indigenous Ghanaian Languages (<em>Ewutu-Efutu, Ga </em>and<em> Dangme</em>) were studied by Akpanglo-Nartey (2012) and the conclusion was that “<em>a lot of the indigenous languages of Ghana are in danger and could even be lost in the next few generations</em>”. Again, Obeng Gyasi (1997: 78) in his concluding remarks stated that, “<em>in fact, there are quite a number of Ghanaian languages that one can conveniently label as threatened or embattled</em>”. To ascertain the extent of damage done to both Ga and Dangme Languages, the researchers used <em>UNESCO Language Vitality & Endangerment Assessment Tool (2003)</em><strong> </strong>to assess the Ga-Dangme Language along two dominant languages used in Ghana; <em>Akan</em> and <em>English Language</em>. Observation was used as a tool to collect data and then analysed qualitatively. The results confirmed that indeed, the Ga-Dangme Language is ‘<em>definitely endangered</em>’ because the language is used mostly by very few speakers, of parental generation up. Finally, the paper suggests ways in which Ga-Dangme could be preserved from further damage or loss. As a consequence, the concept of the native speaker is becoming increasingly blurred and is in danger of becoming lost. Researchers in different disciplines have highlighted the inimical import of the term (Cheng, Burgess, Vernooij, Solis-Barroso, McDermott & Naboodiripad, 2021). However, it is necessary to preserve the term in order to maintain the native speaker’s identity (Kim, 2022) and authenticity. Every Nigerian has an ethnic language by virtue of the fact that their parents are Nigerians which makes him/her the possessor of an L1 or first language. But, does the possession of a mother tongue qualify a person to be a native speaker in Nigeria in the traditional sense of the term? Some other children have acquired Nigerian English as their first language and cannot communicate in any other language except Nigerian English. As a consequence, could they also be termed ‘native speakers of English?’ Similarly, would children who have acquired Nigerian Pidgin (Niger Delta region) as their first language also be referred to as native speakers of Pidgin? There are also deaf people in Nigeria and similar questions emerge about how best to describe their native language. It is against this background that this paper undertakes a critical literature review to examine the changing status of the Nigerian ‘native speaker’ and the nuances associated with it, many of which are often ignored or concealed in the attempt to understand it as a homogenous term. Arising from the literature review, the paper argues that in future, Nigerian indigenous languages may become extinct and that to guard against this outcome, there is a need to preserve native languages in the country, hence the status of its speakers. An experiment was conducted with two tenth classes at Dien Hai Highschool, Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam. In one class, grammar was taught with the grammar games at the practice stage while the other was taught as normal. The study proved that games had positive effects on students’ learning English grammar at Dien Hai High school. Data from the questionnaire revealed that games brought about an amusing atmosphere, games created the learning environment and games provided students with opportunities and challenges to practice English grammar. Besides, by means of tests, the data collections showed that students could get better results when they learnt English grammar with games. The students in the experiment class achieved better results than those of the control at the end of the experiment. Particularly, the number of good students in the experimental group increased considerably from 4.9% in Test 1 to 17.1% in Test 4.
