This study explored this linguistic situation using data from interviews and recordings of classroom interactions in a Junior High School located in the predominantly Twi-speaking community of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. To achieve this objective, three research questions and a research hypothesis were formulated to guide this study. In all, four language teachers and twenty students were randomly selected purposively for the study. The outcomes of the study showed that students’ lack of competence in English and the linguistic gaps in Twi is the pragmatic factors that influence language choices in this classroom and that code-switching is the main medium adapted to cater to these linguistic challenges. Furthermore, all participants had positive attitudes towards English aa s medium of instruction and as a subject of study because of its utilitarian function, and code-switching as a medium of instruction because it aids in lesson comprehension but they have negative and uncertain attitudes towards Twi as a medium of instruction and as a subject of study respectively because it has a low aspirational function. The study concluded with recommendations that there should be a distinction between the medium of instruction and medium of class interactions or put a premium on students’ needs as the basis for language-in-education policies; that Ghanaian indigenous languages be made compulsory subjects of study from primary school to the Senior High School level and that competence in at least a Ghanaian indigenous language be made a condition for employment in Ghana to give a strong aspirational function to Ghanaian languages as well as trigger positive attitudes towards these languages. Its goal is to determine the significance of authentic papers based on cultural themes in the development of intercultural competency in English language students. The pedagogical implementation of activities is planned in accordance with the specified criteria for assessing culturally relevant material. In terms of intercultural competence, Byram's (2002) part of intercultural competence (ICCo) is assistance for task planning and execution. Two surveys, a questionnaire, and an interview were used to collect data in this qualitative action research project. The subjects of the survey included 80 students and four fourth-year students majoring in English Studies and Translation and Interpreting and three lecturers of English, teaching Intercultural Communication (ICC) courses from School of Foreign Languages, Can Tho University. The findings demonstrate that students comprehend diversity, appreciate other cultures, and are interested in learning about different societies. Similarly, the students stated that they were open to discussing cultural issues. Furthermore, elements from other English classes help students learn and become more interested in culture. Finally, recommendations will be offered to assist instructors in improving intercultural communication. When using authentic materials as mediators to develop their intercultural competence in learning English, the initiative seeks to assist students to get a different viewpoint and higher awareness. Finally, the researcher will provide suggestions for further research. Using synonyms in speaking and writing correctly has always been challenging for learners. This study was conducted with the aim to identify common errors in using synonyms in spoken and written English and providing solutions to solve the problems. The participants in this research were 50 second-year and 50 final-year students from the EFL high-quality program at Can Tho University. Two tools were used to collect data: A multiple-choice test and a questionnaire. With the test, data on the student’s proficiency in synonyms were collected. With the questionnaire, students’ perceptions and attitudes toward synonyms were measured. By using the SPSS program, the responses to the test were analyzed by calculating the frequency and percentage of correct and incorrect answers. The responses to the questionnaire were measured with descriptive analysis of errors and solutions using synonyms. The findings revealed that students often misunderstood the meaning of synonyms and they did not understand all the layers of meaning of a word. This study contributes to the field of linguistics by presenting several possible solutions that can assist students in avoiding the misuse of synonyms in spoken and written English. The quantitative research was carried out at Can Tho University (CTU), one of the most prestigious universities in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The participants were 90 English-majored students of the Department of English Studies (courses 44 to 47) who studied Pragmatics. The questionnaire was used to measure students' use of social networks during class and self-study of students majoring in the English Language – a high-quality program for developing pragmatic competence. The findings showed that most participants use social networks to improve and develop their pragmatic abilities. The most commonly used social networks for improving pragmatics were Facebook and Youtube. They also pointed out that the most common pragmatics knowledge on social networks was about conversational implication, speech acts, and politeness. The results of this study were suggested to help English language students understand the context of utterances, convey exactly what they want to say to their listeners, and overcome the barrier of ambiguity based on the manner, position, and time of utterance. The data source for this study was collected from 80 writings composed by EFL second-year students. The findings revealed that there were seven (7) types of errors in terms of sentence structure: (1) Dangling Modifier, (2) Squinting Modifier, (3) Illogical Sentence, (4) Fragmented Sentence, (5) Run-on Sentence, (6) Inappropriate Coordinating Conjunction, and (7) Inversion of Subject-Verb. Those errors were caused by mother tongue influence, teaching approaches and materials, lack of grammatical knowledge and others. As one of the representative works of Song Ci by Xin Qiji, a bold and unconstrained poet, Tune: Chou Nu Er Written on the Wall on My Way to Boshan has been favored by many translators at home and abroad, and there are many English versions in existence. The translation theory of \"Functional Equivalence\" points out that \"Translating consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style\". Translation contains not only lexical equivalence, but also semantic equivalence, stylistic equivalence, and conveys superficial lexical information and deep cultural information. Poetry stands on the beauty of sound, meaning and form, and also has a great cultural connotation. Therefore, it is necessary to convey the source language information and reproduce the cultural connotation in translation. Based on this, this paper takes two English versions of Tune: Chou Nu Er Written on the Wall on My Way to Boshan as the research object, analyzes the functional equivalence in poetry translation from three aspects: meaning, sound and form, and discusses the guiding significance and rationality of functional equivalence theory in the translation of Song Ci. Being a phonological study, it is the first full-length investigation and analysis of Ikhin syllable structure which hitherto had not been studied to this depth. The previous study mainly dwells on the phonetics of the language. I examine the syllable structure of Ikhin at the phonetic and phonemic levels. The study observes that the Ikhin syllable structure types are CV and V at the phonemic level. Further reviews show that Ikhin does not have syllabic nasal as is found in some other Edoid languages. This paper observes that these phonemic syllable structure types, CV and V, sometimes have surface CCV structures. The study reveals that the C2, in CCV syllable is due to the creation of approximants and the possible C2 is [j] or [w]. As in the case of related Edoid languages that have been previously described, the study confirms that the created approximants are a result of the glide formation rule. In the case of [Cj], previous study on Ikhin language observes an assimilatory process known as palatalization. Therefore, this study undertakes some analyses of these suspicious segments [Cj] and [Cw] in Ikhin with a view to confirming that it is a sequence of a consonant and a glide, not a single segment. Thus, using a descriptive approach, the paper presents syllable structure processes such as glide formation, vowel elision and vowel insertion in Ikhin. Optimality theory is used in analyzing and presenting the data. To our knowledge, very few studies have been conducted to explore the impact of blended learning with Google Classroom application classrooms for teaching English speaking skills in the secondary school context. Therefore, the current experimental study aims to investigate (1) EFL learners' perceptions of Google Classroom application in speaking classes; (2) The impacts of Google Classroom application on learners' speaking performance. The sample was 35 eighth-grade students coming from a secondary school in the Mekong Delta. The quasi-experimental research was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Quantitative data were collected by using Pre-Test and Post Test, whereas qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings show that students highly perceived the benefits of using Google Classroom in speaking class. However, students encountered some difficulties while using Google Classroom. It is believed that the results of this research will form a basis for future research in terms of practicality and theory.
