Like the <em>communicative language teaching</em> method, the <em>integrated approach</em> exposes English language learners to authentic language and challenges them to interact naturally in the language. The designers of English language curriculum in Ghana and Guinea-Conakry believe that the <em>receptive</em> (listening and reading) and <em>productive</em> (speaking and writing) skills are interrelated and hence complementary, and they must not be taught separately. Teaching language skills separately in a language learning setting has been defined as the <em>traditional approach</em> to teaching a second or a foreign language. Teachers of English in Ghana and Guinea-Conakry are expected to move away from the <em>traditional approach</em> to the<em> integrated</em> <em>approach </em>to language teaching. This paper aims to find out whether teachers of English in Ghana and Guinea-Conakry are familiar with the <em>Integrated Language Teaching </em>method and are being employed in the ESL and EFL classrooms in Ghana and Guinea-Conakry respectively. <em>A classroom observation</em> and <em>a semi-structured interview</em> were conducted with 24 English language teachers from 4 junior high schools and 8 senior high schools in Ghana and 5 teachers of English from Saint-André Catholic School, Guinea-Conakry. The findings showed that there was a disparity between the curriculum developers’ expectations and classroom practice in Ghana and that the selection of teaching methodology was highly influenced by the thought that the students had to sit for high-stakes tests but not that they had to attain communicative competence. However, in Guinea-Conakry, teachers used the<em> Integrated Language Teaching </em>method because <em>speaking</em> is tested.</p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src=\"/-counters-/lit/0758/a.php\" alt=\"Hit counter\" /></p>","PeriodicalId":321145,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Applied Linguistics Studies","volume":"17 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140264280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the purpose of the research is to find out if the review literature search has focused on this respect in teaching listening so far, especially in the Vietnamese context. The present study documents teachers’ perceptions and practices towards using authentic materials in teaching listening in the foreign language centers in Can Tho City. The researcher used multi-methods of data collection i.e. questionnaire observation and interview, in which 45 teachers got involved. The findings show that most teachers had positive perceptions about using authentic materials in teaching listening in terms of resources for using authentic materials, criteria of using authentic materials, learners’ levels and using authentic materials, Stages in the listening lesson of using authentic materials, benefits of using authentic materials, challenges of using authentic materials. The study also finds that factors such as teachers’ different teaching contexts, educational backgrounds, teaching experiences, genders, and ages did not affect their perceptions. Significantly, many mismatches were found between teachers’ perceptions and practices about teaching listening. The result of the study confirms that teachers’ perceptions were partly reflected in their practices. Considering these findings, some implications were made. Data were collected from 81 French-speaking Cameroonian university students. The analysis focused on the types of request responses (preferred, dis-preferred or open-ended) and the types and linguistic realizations of the speech acts (head acts and external modifiers) used to respond to requests. Request response strategies were also examined in terms of rapport management. The results showed that the participants mostly used compliance-responses. It was also found that positive responses to requests were mostly realised using combinations of agreements and/or promises to perform the requested act and external modifiers, while negative responses to requests were realized using combinations of refusals and/or reprimands and external modifiers. The few cases of open-ended responses to requests displayed combinations of aspects of compliance and elements non-compliance responses. The analysis also revealed social variation in the use of the three types of request responses. While the study expands the scope of research on the pragmatics of Cameroon French, it calls for further research on request responses. Martinaj","doi":"10.46827/ejals.v6i2.449","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46827/ejals.v6i2.449","url":null,"abstract":"The English language is considered the global business language and a mutual language to provide communication and understanding in business. Learning foreign languages and implementing language management strategies enable cross-cultural communication, business growth and career enhancement. Drawing on this theory of business communication, this study explores the effects of language proficiency in business operations of Kosovan small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which intend to become integrated globally, by using mixed methods and the interpretation of business managers (Sample 1, N = 5), two pilot tests (Sample 2, N = 7 and N = 29) and an online questionnaire (Sample 3, N = 139). The role of English in business communication was interrelated with an analysis of other foreign languages, along with the implementation of language strategies and the effect of language skills on career development. This squares well with the proposition that these three aspects are consistent in their contribution to effective communication in business and convey richness on both an individual and a company level. The findings offer a new perspective on the effects of using foreign languages in business communication, which consequently contributes to internationalization, multilingualism and cross-cultural communication. Most African proverbial metaphors, however, make reference to customs and situations that might be unfamiliar to some language users especially young people. On the basis of this background, this study employed image schemas to interpret Ekegusii proverbial metaphors that allude to young people. The research was anchored within descriptive research design. Primary data was collected from four Ekegusii respondents of an advanced age of at least seventy years old through an interview schedule. The collected data were then subjected to the Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) in which four annotators were used to identify Ekegusii proverbial metaphors. Seven Ekegusii proverbial metaphors that refer to young people were identified through MIPVU. The identified proverbial metaphors were then subjected to the FORCE and CONTAINER schemas and their subsidiary schemas for analysis. The paper reveals that there are norms and customs regarding young people that are conveyed through Ekegusii proverbial metaphors. In addition, image schemas are fundamental in explaining the role, place, and cultural expectations of young men and women in Gusii. The study concludes that proverbial metaphors are useful tools of communication, and should be interpreted using Cognitive Linguistics paradigm. It particularly looks at the socio-pragmatic usage of the Hausa names. This paper argues that the Hausa give names to their children by considering the social, cultural, and religious philosophy of the Hausa speech community. The philosophy behind these Hausa naming practices goes a long way to help in the peculiar identity of the Ghanaian Hausa. This, to a very large extent, hints that there is a link between names and personal identity as far as naming practices among the Hausa in particular, and Africans in general are concerned. The study, using interview, observation and the researcher’s introspection as a data collection method and Linguistic Relativity as a theoretical framework, reveals three categories of names used by the Ghanaian Hausa. These are Judeo-Islamo-Christian names, Hausa names of Arabic origin and Hausa traditional names. Taking political speeches as analytical data, the study focuses on the expressing of ethical judgments used as a means of destabilization of the political opponent. The adopted method is empirical-inductive and qualitative. Thus, the empirical verification of the validity of the research hypotheses has been possible through the exploration and interpretation of the data collected. The results of the data analysis reveal that causal attribution is a discursive practice through which the political leader expresses his subjectivity in terms of negative evaluation of the actions and political choices of the person he or she is challenging politically. The linguistic processes used in moral judgments expressing are lexical and grammatical. The study collected data from three instructors who tried the CBL method in a communication course. The findings show that the instructors perceived CBL as an effective pedagogical method that enhances involvement, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills among students. The instructors also reported that CBL contributed to the development of the students' confidence and motivation in communicating with others in English as well as their intercultural competence. However, the study highlights several challenges in using this method, including the amount of time and effort required to create appropriate scenarios, potential limitations in students' language proficiency, and the need for ongoing support for instructors to facilitate this method effectively. The study suggests that CBL is an effective approach to teaching English communication courses and recommends further support and resources for instructors to implement this approach successfully.
