{"title":"The Peculiarities of the Objects of Medieval Architectonic Plastic Arts from the Fortress of Anacopia in the Universal Cultural Context of the Crimea and North Caucasus","authors":"Alkhas Argun","doi":"10.2991/AHTI-19.2019.16","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2991/AHTI-19.2019.16","url":null,"abstract":"The performed research aims at revealing the functional use and initial location of a part of the objects of architectonic plastic arts, most of which decorated the early medieval Christian structures in the fortress complex of Anacopia, and also at revealing historic and cultural links with the neighboring regions of the Byzantine Oecumene: North Caucasus and the Crimea. In the first half of the 10th century the temple was reconstructed due to the new liturgical rules, accepted in Constantinople in the 9th century. It was still devoted to Our Lady, but during the reconstruction appear new facade finish, a par of which is preserved in two entrance portals. After the reconstruction also appeared a dome and a dome drum, and, according to the new features of liturgy which appeared in the Byzantine Empire at the end of the 9th century. The appearance of ornamental intertwined designs near the borders of the kingdom of Abkhazia shows that Abkhazian kings took part in the Christianisation of Alania. Historical science, as a rule, investigates architectural objects, established urban ensembles or historical cities. Applied research and practical urban planning should focus on functional zones, structure, and infrastructure of populated areas. Urban areas of different scale as objects of cultural history that function actively in all their problematic complexity mostly remain subjects of scholarly debate. Thus, there forms a strong contradiction in the understanding of approaches to the renovation of a modern city. In accordance with the Quebec Declaration, the identity pertains to the relations between population and a town or a village, appearing when the inhabitants perceive the settlement as something of their own, as a place, with which they have become intimately linked by their life style, memorial sites, various material and nonmaterial ties. Given that the identity is based on both material, and non-material heritage, a threat to its preservation is posed by both the substantial changes in daily life, and the loss of valuable cultural heritage. The identity is psychologically important for the population; it determines the consolidation of the inhabitants, the stability of social structures. The anthropological studies show that, as in many small towns of eastern and southern Europe, the identity of settlements is quite high in the Russian small towns, despite the unfavorable living conditions existing in many of them. {"title":"The Architecture of the Early Medieval Jain Temple and Ritual The Analysis of Ellora Caves","authors":"Darya Vorobyeva","doi":"10.2991/AHTI-19.2019.20","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2991/AHTI-19.2019.20","url":null,"abstract":"The article is dedicated to the analysis of various components of architecture and iconographic program of the Jain temple that can reflect rituals of that age; on the example of Ellora complex, this paper tries to understand the concepts embodied in architecture and sculpture, as well as transformation of ideas over time. Much information can be obtained from the comparison of the composition of Hindu and Jain temples. The scale of architecture and its images, spatial orientation, physiology of the architecture, and its mission bring adepts to spiritual rebirth. They play an important role and reflect the ritual as well. From the yakṣas, who bestow the material welfare, through a palace-like space, the believer passes to the hidden place of garbhagṛha, where Jina sits in absolute darkness, silence and tightness; the role of meditating Jina is more a role model than an object of worship.
