The infinite series solution was derived using the method of eigenfunction expansions. The model validation was conducted based on the long-term pavement performance (LTPP) program FWD temperature data. The interpolatory trigonometric polynomials were used to approximate a pavement surface temperature history by using temperatures measured at different times during FWD testing. Total of 2,066 and 1,968 pavement subsurface temperatures within surface layers were predicted by using the derived infinite series solution for flexible and rigid pavements, respectively. These temperature profile predictions were compared with the measured pavement subsurface temperatures, showing that the proposed solution can rapidly and accurately predict the transient temperature ...","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"113 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116325435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many past studies were conducted to provide public agencies with optimal MR&R strategies for selecting the correct treatment types at the appropriate application times. While researchers did establish and confirm that the annual deterioration rate and the effectiveness of the MR&R activities are the key input factors that affect the outcomes of MR&R strategy models, they did not spend nearly as much time on engineering inquiry to measure the effectiveness of MR&R activities as they did on projecting the deterioration patterns of bridge systems. The issues of selection bias, empirical data reliability, and overstatement of the effectiveness of MR&R activities continue to compromise the present methods. Therefore, this paper presents a new method that addresses these issues by utilizing the bridge condition evaluation criteria commonly appl...","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117309205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can be used in many applications, such as unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) queue marching, traffic congestion relief, automatic driving systems, etc. Trajectory tracking has been the main consideration in previous studies, but the research about following distance is rare. In this paper, a novel vehicle-following model is proposed for independent vehicle following. In the proposed model, multisensor information is fused to promote the detection accuracy. Moreover, a virtual piecewise spline tow-bar is built between the leader vehicle and the follower vehicle. According to the state of virtual tow-bar, the following speed and heading can be well controlled, to keep a reasonable gap between two vehicles. The proposed vehicle-following model is designed for low speed and minor vehicle spacing case. By using the proposed vehicle-following model, the performance of multple-vehicle automatic cruise can be improved, res...","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117138373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing and field coring was conducted in 26 locations in Seoul City in which back-calculated and laboratory measured modulus were compared. A frequency-temperature correction model is developed based on the frequency-temperature superposition principle and was verified by comparing to current temperature correction models. The proposed model has the lowest prediction error of 8.2% in comparing asphalt concrete dynamic modulus, but is limited within the linear range of the dynamic modulus and reduced frequency curve in a logarithmic scale. A new procedure in establishing damaged asphalt concrete (AC) master curves is proposed considering a damage factor which is used in determining damaged δ  and α parameters. This research analyzes the variability of the D factor for bicycle traffic and identifies the factors that lead to such variability. The importance of the D factor stems from its potential application in estimating the daily volume of one travel direction at a particular count station using the daily count of the other direction. This case takes place when the sensor installed on one direction is down because of malfunction. This research explores the temporal and spatial transferability of the D factors of bicycle traffic. Different sets of bicycle D factors were developed according to different criteria, and were further used for estimation purposes. The study made use of daily bicycle volume data, which were collected at 10 bidirectional count stations in the City of Vancouver, Canada, between 2009 and 2011. This paper develops a short-term traffic condition prediction model based on the k-nearest neighbor algorithm. In the prediction model, the time-varying and continuous characteristic of traffic flow is considered, and the multi-time-step prediction model is proposed based on the single-time-step model. To test the accuracy of the proposed multi-time-step prediction model, GPS data of taxis in Foshan city, China, are used. The results show that the multi-time-step prediction model with spatial-temporal parameters provides a good performance compared with the support vector machine (SVM) model, artificial neural network (ANN) model, real-time-data model, and history-data model. The results also appear to indicate that the proposed k-nearest neighbor model is an effective approach in predicting the short-term traffic condition.","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125468515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These changes are producing an exponential increase in the damage caused to highway pavements and bridges. A disproportionate amount of highway damage is caused by extremely heavy trucks, many of which are illegally exceeding existing truck weight limits. To control the number of illegal overweight trucks, many states have installed fixed truck weighing stations on main highways and have deployed specially trained state police units that perform random roadside inspections to verify the safe operation of trucks and their compliance with the applicable legal weight limits. However, a preliminary study of police roadside inspections shows no correlation between the regions of high enforcement operations and those where overweight trucks are most frequent. Such random deployment of enforcement teams reduces the efficiency of the e...","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121591228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One characteristic of Bluetooth-based travel time data obtained for travel time sample-generation purposes is that a MAC address is typically read multiple times as a vehicle containing the Bluetooth device travels within the length of road covered by the DCU’s antenna. Such data records of the same MAC address will have different timestamps and received signal strength levels. If the DCUs are installed at arterial intersections to collect travel time samples, this characteristic of MAC address data collection may also be used as the basis for estimating intersection performance. In this research, the use of the time/duration information present in the MAC address data to estimate intersection performance measures is investigate...","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129993394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To date, this combination treatment has not been rigorously evaluated with a multistate database. To fill this void, this study evaluated treated two-lane rural road locations in three states. To account for potential site selection bias, an empirical Bayes (EB) before-after analysis was conducted. The combined results for all states indicate statistically significant crash reductions for all crash types analyzed. The crash type with the smallest crash modification factor (CMF) (i.e., the greatest crash reduction) is head-on with a CMF of 0.632 (i.e., a crash reduction of 36.8%). For run-off-road, head-on, and sideswipe-opposite direction crashes combined (i.e., lane departure crashes), the estimated CMF is 0.733. The estimation was first carried out by using the input-output and queue accumulation polygon methods. These were evaluated by using data from two instrumented intersections in the city of Lincoln, Nebraska. However, the estimates did not agree well with the actual data primarily because of the errors in counts obtained from the automated detectors. Hence, an analysis of the characteristics of the errors was carried out. A model-based estimation approach using the Kalman filter was then developed. Suitable modifications were further applied to the estimation process by incorporating calibration constants for particular site/traffic conditions in the Kalman filter estimation scheme. The results obtained were promising, indicating that the scheme could be used for performance analysis of signalized intersection...","PeriodicalId":305908,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Transportation Engineering-asce","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115100785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
