Learners (N=39) were introduced to the EcoLexicon corpus and\u0000 trained to use its basic query tools. The rationale behind this activity was\u0000 to introduce learners to contextualization patterns and genre-specific\u0000 features of the professional target language, which in its turn would ensure\u0000 acceptability and appropriateness of their linguistic choices. The learners\u0000 were offered a series of guided and independent tasks on terminology\u0000 disambiguation and corpus-assisted speech production. At the end of the\u0000 semester a survey was administered to the students to assess their\u0000 perception of hands-on corpus experience. Descriptive statistics show\u0000 preliminary evidence that corpus tools provide illuminating data, foster\u0000 understanding of nuances within synonymous groups of words, and increase\u0000 overall language awareness. However, hands-on Data Driven Learning (DDL)\u0000 experience presented a few challenges which, however, may be remedied by\u0000 careful design of teaching materials and assignments.

The results showed that\u0000 students using AI speakers outperformed on the Test of English for\u0000 International Communication (TOEIC) a group of non-AI users, who instead\u0000 exclusively used online materials. This paper\u0000 gives a brief overview of developments and challenges when using Data-Driven\u0000 Learning (DDL) to teach French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Learners can benefit from\u0000 contextual interactions and develop cultural competencies by fulfilling\u0000 quests or exploring the environment. However, most of the existing systems\u0000 contain few pre-designed scenarios, inadequate for covering unique aspects\u0000 of different cultures. This study introduces a situation creation toolkit\u0000 for teachers and learners to design their culture-specific scenarios in a 3D\u0000 environment and share it with others to experience such situations. In a\u0000 preliminary experiment, 37 English learners with different cultural\u0000 backgrounds created a scenario, specific to their culture, and provided\u0000 proper/improper communicative choices as well as cultural-related notes.\u0000 Scenarios were then exchanged to those of different cultures for\u0000 role-playing and decision-making. Results highlighted the influence of L1\u0000 culture and stereotyping when facing an unfamiliar cultural context, thus\u0000 leading to culturally unacceptable behavior. Findings suggest that through\u0000 real-life scenario design and experience, our platform can prepare learners\u0000 to interact in culturally appropriate ways and encourages them to gain\u0000 cross-cultural competence.

A qualitative case study approach was taken to closely\u0000 examine the linguistic interaction between three L2 learners of English at a\u0000 Japanese university who played the game over four one-hour sessions. The\u0000 findings include clear examples of learners negotiating for meaning and\u0000 making use of a range of discourse strategies theorised to contribute to\u0000 effective language learning within an interactionist SLA framework. By\u0000 demonstrating that the learner-to-learner interaction evoked by this game\u0000 can set in motion multiple processes linked to L2 development, the results\u0000 suggest that the game, as well as others that make use of a similar\u0000 information-gap mechanic, could be effectively put to use for language\u0000 learning and teaching purposes in a variety of formal and informal\u0000 educational contexts.

When learners communicate directly in this\u0000 multicultural space, there is potential for new cultural practices to be\u0000 articulated or transcended into a new form of knowledge that blurs cultural\u0000 boundaries.
