Even with rapid advances in the field of end-user programming and software engineering, teachers/learners often spend considerable effort for using technology to support their activities. While there are many end-user environments like Scratch, Alice and so on, their focus is on programming but our need is to design these kinds of environments to support adult literacy in India, which is our target group. In this paper, we present GURU, a prototype environment for both teachers/learners alike to enrich their teaching/learning experience. GURU has two unique aspects: It is designed for teachers with minimal technical expertise and it strongly aligns with learning methodologies. It is based on IDont framework that uses ontologies for capturing different aspects of adult literacy instructional design. In this short paper, we present the design of GURU as a teachers' environment. GURU is essentially a web based authoring environment for creating adult literacy eLearning content but points to the need for such kinds of environments for subjects other than programming.","PeriodicalId":301310,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115440553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A physics problem can be represented as an operational concept map (OCM) by identifying important concepts and relationships among these concepts from the problem scenario. This form of representation enables the visualization tool to assist a solver to construct a graphical, simulation-enabled concept map regarding a specific physics problem solving. To help solvers construct problem representation and validate its corresponding hypothetical relationships, an OCM integrates the organization function of concept map with hypothesis simulation capability. The application of an OCM is further introduced with a kinematics problem in order to demonstrate the features of hypothesis creations, evaluation, and revision with feedback messages.","PeriodicalId":301310,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126895622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study proposed an approach that allows students to play a role for task-based learning in a classroom and can immediately observe their figures embedded in the virtual context. Reflection that the proposed approach might be able to support via self-observation plays an important role in learning process. Therefore, we examine the idea by conducting a case study in which college students were recruited to understand how the self-observation approach could affect their reflection. Comparing to the control group that students could not see their figures appearing in the virtual environment, statistic results show significant difference according to their subjective questionnaire results.","PeriodicalId":301310,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116850832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a good book can serve entertaining and learning purposes, so does a movie. In addition to that, movies are in general more engaging and reach a wider audience. In this work, we present and evaluate a method that overcomes the challenge of generating recommendations among heterogeneous resources. In our case, we recommend movies in the context of a learning object. We evaluate our method with 60 participants that judged the relevance of the recommendations. Results show that, in over 74% of the cases the recommendations are in fact related to the given learning object, outperforming a text-based recommendation approach. The implications of our work can take learning outside the classroom and invoke it during the joy of watching a movie.","PeriodicalId":301310,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125252916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the resulting knowledge acquisition process is often hindered by the linearity that is inherent to these resources, making it difficult for learners to realize the many links that exist between these concepts. This research project aims at establishing and implementing a rich semantic model for the identification and classification of knowledge in a core-periphery structure at the service of graduate level students of engineering sciences. This model will allow learners to obtain a global view of knowledge domains and to identify roadmaps for the knowledge acquisition process.","PeriodicalId":301310,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121502461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach is widely known as Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). On the other hand, during the last decade a number of Open Educational Resources (OERs) initiatives have been emerged worldwide. These initiatives have also influenced the field of Technology-enhanced Language Learning (TELL) and some Learning Object Repositories (LORs) have been recently developed towards supporting sharing and re-use of digital language learning resources. However, these LORs do not put emphasis on the re-use of MALL resources, despite the fact that, open access and reuse is even more important in MALL than other fields of application since the development of new MALL resources and practices is a costly process due to the diverse technical particularities of the different types of mobile devices. In previous work, a LOR that aims to support open access and re-use to MALL resources and courses has been proposed, namely the Mobile2Learn Repository. In this paper, we conduct a quantitative analysis of the reuse of MALL resources stored in Mobile2Learn Repository and we discuss the factors that can influence and possible enhance MALL resources reuse in Mobile2Learn Repository.","PeriodicalId":301310,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE 13th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies","volume":"221 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120877957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
