Our objective was to analyze the data on pertussis from 2007 to 2011 available online on the National Information System of Notifiable Diseases - SINAN (Sistema de Informacao de Agravos de Notificacao). Despite being preventable by vaccination, pertussis still has an incidence of 7.9/100,000 among babies under twelve months, with a lethality rate of 2.4% for this age group. There were no significant differences between sexes. Data analyzed demonstrated a seasonal variation with greater number of cases observed on transition from spring to summer months, October through December. The year 2011 recorded the highest number of cases. The national program of immunization has obtained a great decrease of cases of pertussis and other preventable diseases in children. Nonetheless a greater effort of education and orientation for mothers need to be done to prevent unnecessary deaths.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133367438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed secondary data of patients with BMI ≥ 25 Kg/m 2 who had microalbuminuria and endothelial function test already performed and inserted into the survey database. The endothelial function was evaluated by reactive hyperemia test (endothelium-dependent vasodilation). Results: This study included 41 women aged of 53 ± 11 years, BMI of 32.56 ± 5.06 Kg/m 2 , WC of 100.36 ± 23.21 cm. There was no correlation between microalbuminuria and endothelial function. A multivariate logistic regression analysis identified glucose fasting (β = 0.804; p < 0,00,1) and HDL (β = - 0.309; p = 0.048) levels as independent predictors of microalbuminuria. Conclusion: Microalbuminuria is not useful as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis in this population, however can be associated to glucose fasting and HDL levels.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132221812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the etiological agent of caseous lymphadenitis in goats and sheep. The prevalence of this infection is high in northeastern of Brazil. The present study evaluated the effects of a methanolic extract from the leaves of the aroeira plant ( Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi ) on the in vivo growth of virulent and attenuated strains of this bacillus. The extract was tested at concentrations of 2000, 1500, 1000, 500, 250, 100 and 10 µg/dL for 48 hours. The first four concentrations inhibited bacterial growth, producing halos of decreasing diameters. No antibacterial effect was found with the remaining concentrations. These results show that bacterial growth was inhibited by an extract of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi at the aforementioned concentrations.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128594746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work examined the saliva of 16 individuals with type II diabetes mellitus (DM) and severe chronic periodontitis (SCP) (G1), 11 with DM and without SCP (G2), 14 without DM with SCP (G3) and 15 without DM and without SCP (G4). The periodontal condition was evaluated, salivary flow and buffering capacity were analyzed and salivary components were measured using commercial kits. Diabetics with SCP showed a tendency to decrease the flow. The buffering capacity remains unchanged. Urea (p < 0.018) and total protein (p < 0.001) were larger and less Calcium was observed (p < 0.0001) in diabetics. In patients with SCP, the DM favored even greater urea increase. The phosphate increased in groups G1, G2 and G3 (p < 0.0001) compared to G4. The metabolism from diabetics with SCP increases salivary proteins, increasing urea resulting from amino acids degradation by periodontal bacterias.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126071068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hyperkalemia is an important adverse effect of therapy for HF. Several factors affect the incidence of hyperkalemia in patients treated for HF, as well as the presence of comorbidities and the use of associated medications. The aim of this study is to gather new evidence regarding the risk of hyperkalemia in patients treated for HF. The well-established therapy for HF involves drugs that may lead to hyperkalemia as inhibitors of angiotensin converting enzyme blockers, angiotensin II receptor blockers, aldosterone receptor blockers and direct renin inhibitors. The high incidence of HF in elderly patients with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus and renal insufficiency increases the risk of hyperkalemia. Anti-inflammatory drugs, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and heparin may aggravate the situation. Conclusion: Given the risk of hyperkalemia in patients undergoing treatment for HF, cautious monitoring of renal function and serum potassium should be performed.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124848694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mothers of autistic children with milder symptoms tend to be more optimistic and emphasize the positive aspects of their children, whereas mothers of children with more severe symptoms talked of the particularly disabling symptoms of their child. With respect to the cause of the problem, the mothers’ reference to organic reasons is a recurrent feature of the interviews. No explanatory model of autism other than that derived from biomedical knowledge was provided in this study. The limitations imposed by autistic children on the lives of their mothers were part of all the narratives, most particularly those of the mothers of children with more severe symptoms. Social support and the identification of a network with which to share experiences and the suffering of their children appear to minimize the effects of isolation in these mothers.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131199457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four papers reported that areas of mirror neurons (MN) were under-active in autistic patients, giving weight to the theory of MN as a cause of ASD. Three papers indicated that MN were activated during the proposed activities, advocating atypical activation of MN, but not necessarily hypoactivation of these areas. One of the articles reported that only part of the MN system or just those areas of interconnected neurons are dysfunctional in autism. Analysis of the selected studies showed a correlation between dysfunction of the mirror neuron system and the main symptoms of autism such as deficits in social cognition, complete absence or a reduction in the individual’s interaction with his/her social environment and a failure in the neural mechanisms of imitation.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114069930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, once coronary anatomy is assessed, it is not known whether this score increments prognostic assessment. Objective: To test the hypothesis that the GRACE Score adds prognostic value to coronary anatomy in patients with ACS. Methods: Prospective cohort, including patients with ACS who underwent coronary angiography while admitted to the hospital. Anatomical extension of coronary disease was characterized by the Duke Jeopardy score (DJS) and the number diseased artery (NDA). The primary end-point was the composite of death, non-fatal MI or refractory unstable angina. Results: 112 patients enrolled, aged 70 ± 12, 14% incidence of cardiovascular events. C-statistics for GRACE was 0.68 (95%CI=0.53-0.84), for DJS was 0.78 (95%CI=0.67-0.9) and for NAD was 0.74 (95%CI=0.61-0.88). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated independent predictive value of GRACE in relation to anatomical information. However, when this Score was added to DJS or NDA, no improving in c-statistic was observed: DJS-GRACE had a c-statistics of 0.78 (95%CI=0.64–0.92) and NAD-GRACE of 0.76 (95%CI=0.60–0.92).
