To ameliorate the problem that students who do not come from information-related backgrounds cannot become digital talent through self-learning, this research creates a design pattern for curriculum maps. A Curriculum Learning Map for cross-domain digital talent is developed by identifying learners' starting points, learning paths, course levels, and learning evaluation. This not only solves cross-domain digital talent's problems scheduling learning plans but also develops students' confidence on cross-domain learning, which expedites the digital economy's development.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122655728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, with China's continuous opening-up, international education in China has been flourished dramatically, more and more international students come to China for degrees. However, due to the limitation of their Chinese level and the differences on Engineering training experiences, the situation of international education in China is challenging, especially in terms of Engineering Education. This paper proposed a five-phase pattern for international students study:1) Standard Mandarin language learning in a supportive and comfortable environment; 2) Culture study in Chinese supported by a series of social activities; 3) English curriculum for professional courses study; 4) Well-developed research environment featured by group study along with Chinese students; 5) Engineering capability developing in an Innovation Center with traditional and cutting-edge technologies. This pattern has been implemented for years, and its effectiveness has been proved.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123169821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To prepare these professionals, Tecnologico de Monterrey has implemented the Tec21 Educational Model, focused on a comprehensive education based on disciplinary and transversal competencies through the didactic technique of Challenge Based Learning. This study shows the results of a “cable car” challenge in which first-year engineering students of the Mechanical and Mechatronics programs took part. The challenge consisted on the design and manufacture of a functional prototype of a small-scale cable car utilizing CAD software and 3D printing. Competencies such as collaborative work, intellectual curiosity and passion for learning were increased. The results showed the participation and satisfaction of the students with the challenge and the competition. There was a strong relationship between the hard and soft skills developed with the challenge and its application to real-life problems in the industry. This type of experience involves students as protagonists of the learning process, encouraging them to direct their own journey of lifelong learning.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"164 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129726659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CCID is currently capable of categorizing footage of Santa Clara University's classrooms as 1. Forward-Facing Lectures 2. Circular or ‘U’ Shaped Lectures and/or whole class discussions 3. Smaller Group discussions and 4. Empty classrooms with 97% accuracy. Further work on the sub-categorization of these categories is underway. CCID has been developed as a component to an ongoing, larger study into the effects of classroom configuration on student learning outcomes. While CCID specifically deals with the categorical analysis of the classroom configuration itself, the next phases of the study will couple this classroom data with anonymized student data, in order to draw conclusions about the most optimal classroom configurations for enhancing learning. By analyzing correlations between different classroom configurations and corresponding student performance, the study will ultimately be able to supply educators with the information needed to setup more effective learning environments.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124615415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this research was to determine the influences of various challenges posed in laboratory practices, an authentic evaluation system focused on the validation of competencies, and the subsequent analysis of students' academic performance to form an engineering profile that will benefit the students in their professional lives. The design of this research project was quasi-experimental, where we compared two different teaching methods applied in different semesters using control and experimental groups. The results of the research conclude that a methodology based on the implementation of laboratory practices is better than the traditional methodology for the development of the transversal and disciplinary competencies which form an engineering profile. The overall results of the research regarding the efficiency of knowledge acquired favor the experimental group, particularly when it comes to procedural, conceptual, and attitudinal competencies.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131689244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC) being appointed by the Malaysian government has come out with the education blueprint to make sure that all engineering diploma program offered in Malaysia to follow their standard. It stated that teaching and learning (TnL) of the program offered must follow 50% of the practical based concept of student learning time (SLT). This paper presents the review work implemented done to change TnL implementation toward 50% of practical work base SLT of Electrical engineering diploma program offered in Universiti Teknologi MARA, UiTM. It is also discussed how the costing effect has been reduced in order to maintain the quality of the diploma engineering program without impacting the university mission and vision.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130814469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After analyzing the records of 35 students, we found that the number of attempts each student rehearse the activities assigned under the Mastery Learning methodology, as well as the performance in these activities, are strongly related with the performance level of the student in an exam of the same topics. In contrast, the amount of time elapsed since the activities are delivered and the exam is taken has no significant effect on the student's performance. As a conclusion, we infer that successful use of Mastery Learning most encourage the students to practice the activities until a high grade is obtained, with the addition of maximizing the number of attempts performed, even a high grade was already obtained.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123747982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
