Especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need support in the form of access to relevant experts and infrastructure available at research institutes. Thus, this paper examines whether research institutes in Germany are currently able to cover the industry's need for digitization expertise and how they need to evolve to better support SMEs during the development of digital products. In order to answer these research questions, the competence demand of SMEs and the supply by the research landscape are compared. On this basis, gaps are identified. The focus of the analysis is on the development of digital products in Germany. Based on concrete project examples, influencing factors for successful knowledge transfer will be discussed and recommendations derived.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126789611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Universities and their educational models are facing a big challenge: technology is changing and evolving in an exponential way. The big question is how can educational models also evolve to prepare graduates with the proper skills needed for a changing technological world? Since 2013, Tecnológico de Monterrey has been implementing its Tec21 Educational model based on flexible programs on how, when and where the learning occurs and the use of Active and Challenged Based Learning with the goal of developing disciplinary and transversal (cross-curricular) competencies. This study shows the results of a Mini Drag Race Challenge for first-year engineering students of the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering programs at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey. The challenge's objective is for a group of students to design and build a car and race it along a straight-line track in the shortest possible time. The development of two soft transversal competencies were chosen with this challenge: Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving. These two soft skills are necessary for any graduate student. Results showed that students were satisfied and engaged with the learning approach of the Mini Drag Race Challenge and identified the importance of these two soft skills in solving real-life problems as future engineers. This active and challenge based learning approach takes the student outside of the traditional way of learning into a hands on experience, promoting a higher order of thinking and with the aim of developing skills and competencies that will prepare them for their engineering professional lives.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123700693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It offers a systematic solution to train engineering students in critical and creative thinking to solve complex engineering problems. The DT method is integrated with the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) approach with the objective of developing problem-solving skillset amongst engineering students. This paper presents the implementation of CDIO-DT towards achieving the program outcome related to environment and sustainability (PO7) for the first year civil engineering students taking an introductory course on Civil Engineering Appreciation (ECM414). Problem-based learning (PBL) was used as a teaching and learning method in the course where the students participated in an innovation competition. Performance criteria matrices were used to evaluate the project report, program outcome attainment, and the application of CDIO-DT approach. Survey conducted indicates that students demonstrated positive perceptions on their knowledge and understanding of the environment and sustainability elements using the CDIO-DT approach. The finding is supported by the true attainment of PO7 in the course assessment. It can be concluded that the CDIO-DT approach is a good method to improve the cognitive learning domains in developing student attributes towards the understanding of complex engineering problem-solving in societal and environmental contexts. Overall, from a continual quality improvement (CQI) perspective this study is important to improve, develop and evaluate the teaching and learning methods adopted for effective engineering education.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130075799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, radiation education has been started again in elementary and junior high schools after 30 years' absence to teach radiation protection. The unit of the dosimetry is defined by Sievert and primary school children are not familiar with the units. It's necessary to develop a new educational tool to teach dosimetry caused by natural radiation for primary school children. The new educational tool was focused on flying aircraft above cities. Cosmic radiation has a feature of altitude dependency. If the learner can monitor the dosimetry in flying aircraft in real time, it will be expected to learn the relationship between the amount of the dosimetry unit and a lower limit for health damage in daily life intuitively. Besides, learners may gain interest in astrophysics and particle physics by using the tool. In this paper, an overview of the new tool is described and the approximation calculation method to estimate the dosimetry in flying aircraft is compared with JISCARD. As the result, the approximation calculation method was verified for the tool for show the dosimetry in flying aircrafts.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130351807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging technology that provides a thematic umbrella that allows educators to develop engineering skills focused on designing electronic devices, programming, connectivity, and the use of platforms in the cloud, among others. This paper describes the experience called “Development of monitoring and control systems for the Internet of Things (IoT)” that took place during the i-Week 2018 at Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico City Campus. The engineering students involved in this activity received training on Sigfox and LoRaWAN technologies from external companies and develop an IoT solution following the PBL (Project-Based Learning) methodology, so the students achieved a global vision about industrial and academic IoT design. Each multidisciplinary team developed a functional prototype for solving a specific real problem using Sigfox and LoRaWaN. Also, an executive report and a testimonial video were the deliverables evaluated. The results of implementing the i-Week are positive because IoT skills, problem-solving and collaborative work competencies were achieved by each student. In addition, an excellent qualitative result was the extraordinary impression of the companies about the technological goals achieved by the students during the i-Week. Besides, their communication skills and their technology integration capacity were developed.","PeriodicalId":250947,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE 11th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128360764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
