Virtual reality (VR) has been considered by classification societies and training organizations as a technology that can significantly improve seafarer's performance and competence with the adaptation of maritime applications developed for design simulation and gaming. This paper presents the evolution of the MarSEVR (Maritime Safety Education with VR) technology as a new concept and technology by integrating finger tracking and hand recognition technologies that increase immersiveness and user engagement within the MarISOT technology, a Green Ocean innovation composed of VR safety applications. The paper approaches this integration by addressing game design, pedagogic and cognitive neuroscience principles and challenges on the use of hand recognition and finger tracking in the MarSEVR learning episodes.","PeriodicalId":236400,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128874612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many new terminologies and approaches were introduced in this concept. Combined with the new technologies and advantages of the 5G telecommunication networks it is possible to gain much faster response times over a reliable infrastructure which paves the way towards efficient industrial control. Based on historical datasets and using the knowledge of the domain specific experts it is possible to label those records with the corresponding key performance indicators which stand out as anomalies or outliers from the normal operation behavior. This paper is concerned with developing new algorithms for fast identification of outliers, which ensure high operational reliability. Our approach is statistical driven, once the usually high dimensional data is mapped into a low dimension for tractable analysis, outliers are captured by statistical decision techniques. As the corresponding numerical analysis performed on industrial data has demonstrated, the method has a reliable performance. Thus, the new methods can prove to be appropriate tools for industrial control in Industry 4.0 environment.","PeriodicalId":236400,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116052529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, a temporal feature guided statistical modeling method is proposed for road modeling. Specifically, a foreground detection method is applied to extract the temporal features from the video and then to estimate a background image. Furthermore, the temporal features guide the statistical modeling method to select sample data. Additionally, a model pruning strategy is applied to estimate the road model. Second, a new road region detection method is presented to detect the road regions in the video. The method applies discrimination functions to classify each pixel in the estimated background image into a road class or a non-road class, respectively. The proposed method provides an intra-cognitive communication mode between the ROI selection and video analysis systems. Experimental results using real traffic videos from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) show that the proposed method is able to (i) detect the road region accurately and robustly and (ii) improve upon the state-of-the-art road recognition methods.","PeriodicalId":236400,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom)","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115247097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two main schools giving definitions for immersion in VR, and their definitions are quite different. One school, associated with B. Witmer and M. Singer, regards immersion as a psychological state of the user. The other school, based on the works of M. Slater, sees immersion as an objective characteristic of a VR system. Some authors call the first type of immersion “psychological immersion” and the second type “technological immersion”. The authors of the present paper bring up the possibility of using alternative terms: “immersedness” for the immersion concept of the first school, and, for that of the second school, “immersingness” (denoting the actively immersing quality of the system) and “immersing” when referring to the act of immersing the user. The term “immersedness” is unambiguous, contrary to the term “psychological immersion” which could also mean a system characteristic when the system is created with the ability to try to manipulate the user with psychological means.","PeriodicalId":236400,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom)","volume":"414 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122870135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a few more recent studies, new paradigms have emerged, but the effect sizes were small, sex-based performance measurements showed mixed results, and most paradigms were not standardized. I expect subjects to have better performances when discriminating between stimuli in the presented VR environment.","PeriodicalId":236400,"journal":{"name":"2020 11th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom)","volume":"247 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128807967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
