Telegram is viewed as an efficient English teaching resource in the media space. The methods of delivering the content in teachers’ blogs as well as relevant peculiarities of a teaching blog as a productive teaching resource have been revealed and analysed. Visual aids play a significant role while presenting the content for learners in the blogs. The humour component is to be characterized as the most highly-demanded type of presenting the language content to be taught.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University. The main trends in Western European and American prose are highlighted. The following genres are characterized: anti-utopia, transformer novel, myth novel, philological novel; phenomena: neorealism, seterature (in particular, fanfiction). The specificity of fantastic literature at the present stage is determined. Common features for the literature of the late 20th – early 21st centuries are traced: intertextuality, hypertextuality, openness, polyvariability of ideas, mythologism.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University. A careful reading of Peucer's dissertation demonstrates several interesting features, the most notable of which are the insignificant interest of its author to newspapers and the lack of a clear distinction between history and news.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University. The latter are gaining discursive power, partially taking over the gatekeeping function from traditional journalism. Using the example of news aggregators as influential \"secondary gatekeepers\", the dynamics of quantitative and qualitative manifestations of media diversity they create are defined. Three common conceptualizations of media diversity serve as the theoretical basis. The author proceeds from the standard of open diversity. The evaluation of news diversity is made according to the parameters of variability, proportionality and balance. The dynamics of the following parameters were revealed: types of media (ownership, ideological position, national affiliation); the presence of a critical message; the nature of the sources used. The following trends were detected: a bias toward the dominance of state-owned media, an increase in the weight of state-owned news agencies, a decrease in the share of opposition publications, rejection of the practice of aggregating of foreign news media. The share of critical materials and \"non-elite\" sources of information has decreased. The results show the risks of news depletion in algorithmically curated environments, mainly under the influence of state media policy.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University. The interest in the topic stems from the fact that in present-day English there is a distinct tendency towards minimization of textual volume; as a result, various types of short texts circulate in great quantities in all the spheres of communication, including science, media, education, business, literature, personal interaction, etc. The sheer quantity of such texts yields an assumption about the emergence of a qualitatively new phenomenon, a special type of texts – small-format texts. They possess a specific set of common mechanisms by means of which they successfully perform their pragmatic function with the help of a limited number of language means; these mechanisms need to be elicited and analyzed. This aim is addressed in the article through the analysis of a significant scope of the scattered linguistic data from the current researches on the relevant topic; also an empirical base of approximately 5000 textual samples belonging to different types of discourse is analyzed. As a result, a set of typological features of small-format texts is determined. One of the key features is the visual integrity of small-format texts, which plays a consolidating role in the process of forming the overall semantics of the texts. Apart from that, the typological parameters include the minimization of the exponential plane; a specific type of the surface structure compression consisting in its multi-layer organization; asymmetry of the exterior and interior (semantic) planes; hierarchization of the functional paradigm; rigidity in the choice of structural and/or content elements within one concrete genre; polycode character, as well as lability of the language norm.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University. Politician’s public speech, especially if it is an inauguration speech of a newly elected president, can be regarded as an efficient means of transmitting vital axiological dominants in terms of strategies of presentation, self-presentation and appeal. The purpose of the article is to determine axiological potential of inauguration speech by means of exposure of axiological dominants – value-based orienting point, which function as supporting elements of its structural and logical composition from the perspective of linguostylistic analysis. In general axiological orienting points play a significant role in motivation activity and are widely used as instruments of implementation of manipulative and affecting potential in speaker’s verbal behavior. This research helped to single out a number of axiological dominants among which is the will of the people, the day (inauguration day), democracy, American way, nation, unity. Their verbal representation is accomplished by means of meliorative emotive lexis and stylistic devices of different language levels. It was noted that stylistic devices of syntactic level including parallel constructions, gradation, parceling and syntactic repetition prevail. The speaker’s communicative behavior can be characterized by a high level of efficiency particularly due to the usage of expressive means in the process of foregrounding the key elements of electorate’s axiological sphere.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University. Lovecraft works is understudied. Based on material from a short story “Pickman’s Model” we may trace a number of distinct isomorphisms between the “ghouls” in the story and the supernatural people of fairies in British folklore, such as stealing and changing babies, therianthropy, connections with netherworld and timelessness, social parasitism and links with the activity of witches. The last point is especially interesting in terms of M. Murray’s outdated anthropological theories, highly favoured by Lovecraft. Beyond that, the problems of horror poetics raised in the story harmoniously intertwine with fairies’ role as tutors and inspirers of art. Thus the choice of folkloric material is vital for the story’s goals and poetics.","PeriodicalId":228573,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Southern Federal University.
