The aim of this study was to assess clinical experience and attitudes towards oral mucosal biopsies in final-year undergraduate dental students.</p><p><strong>Material and methods: </strong>Online questionnaire was sent to dental students in six European countries (Croatia, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom). The questionnaire assessed clinical experience, attitudes to oral biopsy, self-perceived competence, and obstacles for performing a biopsy. Multiple choice questions and 5-point Likert scale were used.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Two hundred and ninety-three students (response rate 24% to 88%) participated in the survey. A small proportion of students (54; 21.7%) performed a biopsy during their undergraduate education, mainly in an oral medicine setting. The majority of students did not consider themselves competent in performing a biopsy. The images were evaluated to determine the main and lateral canals, the diameter of the main canal, the presence of ductal stenosis, central ductal dilatation, acinar pooling, the presence of sialoliths, and the visualization of the main and lateral canals and parenchyma.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>There was no statistically significant difference between the patients and controls in the diameters of the primary ducts of submandibular glands and the visibility of secondary and tertiary ducts, sialoliths, ductal stenosis, and acinar pooling (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, ductal dilatation and the location of ductal dilatation were statistically more prevalent in diabetic patients (p = 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively).</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The prevalence of sialolith, ductal stenosis, and peripheral ductal dilatation was higher among diabetic patients than in the control group, although this difference was not statistically significant. However, ductal dilatation was observed to be statistically significantly more prevalent in diabetics. As part of the JEB, patients present with syndromic amelogenesis imperfecta (AI). Reports have described external crown resorption (ECR) in the teeth of patients with JEB, but its prevalence is unknown.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>To determine the prevalence of ECR in patients with JEB.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A longitudinal retrospective cohort study was performed at the Special Care Dentistry Clinic, University of Chile. Clinical records of patients with JEB between 2005 and 2024 were analysed. Prevalence of ECR per patient, per type of tooth and per tooth was calculated.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Of the 20 patients examined, 90% presented ECR in at least one tooth, with an average of 4.8 primary and 6.8 permanent teeth affected. The most affected type of teeth were the incisors. 57.5% of primary incisors and 68% of permanent incisors had resorption. The most affected tooth was #82 in primary dentition (75%) and #32 in the permanent dentition (88.9%).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The prevalence of ECR in patients with AI due to JEB caused by variants in LAMB3 was 90%. Polyphenols are a class of compounds extracted from herbs and diets, characterized by the presence of more than one phenol unit per molecule. Emerging evidence has revealed that polyphenols show significant effectiveness in ameliorating tissue destruction in periodontitis. Herein, we comprehensively review current literature studying the critical role of polyphenols in periodontitis and summarize the predominant molecular mechanisms in immunomodulation and periodontal regeneration, aiming to provide a better understanding of their therapeutic potential in periodontitis.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched for articles, reviews, and clinical studies published until August 2024.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>We summarized the immunomodulatory effects of polyphenols in vivo and in vitro, described the research advance regulating the functions of periodontal ligament stem cells and their regeneration potential, and discussed the underlying mechanisms. Finally, we propose future directions for periodontitis therapies with polyphenols.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Polyphenols exert a significant anti-inflammatory effect and promising potential to promote periodontal regeneration. Our study aims to elucidate the interplay between macrophages and Piezo2 in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) chronic pain.</p><p><strong>Materials and methods: </strong>We induced TMJOA chronic pain in rats via articular injection of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA). We then depleted macrophages using clodronate liposomes and overexpressed Piezo2 in trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons with adeno-associated virus 9 (AAV9)-Piezo2 in TMJOA rats. To explore the connection between macrophages and Piezo2, we employed immunofluorescence, in vitro studies, and the Rat Grimace Scale (RGS) to evaluate pain thresholds in TMJOA rats.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A positive correlation was observed between macrophage infiltration and Piezo2 upregulation in TG neurons of TMJOA rats. Depletion of infiltrated macrophages downregulated Piezo2 in TG neurons, while Piezo2 overexpression negated the pain-relieving effects of infiltrated macrophage depletion in TMJOA rats. Macrophages primarily influenced Piezo2 expression in IB4 + - TG neurons of TMJOA chronic pain rats. Possible risk factors for self-reported temporomandibular disorders (3Q/TMD; DC/TMD), mandibular impairments (Mandibular Function Impairment Questionnaire), and obstructive sleep apnea (STOP-Bang) were explored using univariate and multiple regression analyses.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>31% of 155 respondents reported temporomandibular disorder symptoms and 40.0% and 5.2% moderate and severe mandibular function impairment, respectively. Intermediate and severe risk for obstructive sleep apnea were reported by 16.1% and 14.8%, respectively. Female gender and Osteogenesis Imperfecta type III were independently associated with the presence of self-reported temporomandibular disorders. Osteogenesis Imperfecta type III, missing teeth, and self-reported temporomandibular disorders were independently associated with impaired mandibular function. Higher age, male gender, and bisphonate use were independently associated with a higher risk for positive screening for obstructive sleep apnea.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>A substantial proportion of Dutch adults with Osteogenesis Imperfecta reported symptoms indicative of temporomandibular disorders, mandibular function impairment, and higher risk for obstructive sleep apnea. Independent reviewers applied predefined eligibility criteria in a two-phase selection process.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Out of a total of 19,183 citations identified, seven met the inclusion criteria. Prevalent symptoms included dysphagia and esophageal webs, with atrophic glossitis and angular cheilitis being common oral manifestations. Most patients presented with long-standing iron deficiency anemia. Head and neck cancers predominantly affected the pharynx and tongue borders, with younger age groups notably affected. The overall risk of bias attributable to the quality of the reports was assessed as \"low\".</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Despite the rarity of PVS-related head and neck cancer, this review underscores its association, particularly in younger patients. Variables were compared according to country of origin.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>We included 649 patients, 359 from Spain and 290 from Colombia. The Colombian cohort was younger, drank more alcohol, had less comorbidities, and reported a greater mean number of days both from symptoms to diagnosis and from then to treatment, which was ∼2.5 times longer in the Colombian cohort. Colombian patients were diagnosed at a more advanced stage. The treatment of choice was resective surgery. In the Colombian cohort, more patients received radio and chemotherapy together with surgery. Second primary tumors and recurrences were more frequent in the Colombian sample (7.2% vs. 2.8%; p = 0.008) and in the Spanish cohort (32% vs. 23.1%; p = 0.012), respectively.
