Nevertheless, this approach has shown drawbacks related to occlusions and adaptation time. The perspective proposed in this paper - our Improved Third-Person Perspective (i-3PP) - does allow the user to see through his/her body in order to fix 3PP limitations like occlusions. As gamers prefer using 3PP for moving actions and the First-Person Perspective (1PP) for fine operations, we verify if this behavior is extensible to simulations in augmented and virtual reality. Finally we check if the i-3PP would be preferred to the other perspectives for any action.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133525487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the mixed reality interface, a more realistic and immersive control style is achieved compared to the traditional keyboard and mouse input devices. The interface proposed in this paper consists of a stereo camera, which tracks the user's hands and fingers robustly and accurately in the 3D space. To enable a physically realistic experience in the interaction, a physics engine is adopted for the simulating the physics of virtual object manipulation. The objects can be picked up and tossed with physical characteristics, such as gravity and collisions which occur in the real world. Detection and interaction in our system is fully computer-vision based, without any markers or additional sensors. We demonstrate this gesture-based interface using two mixed reality game implementations: finger fishing, in which a player can simulate fishing for virtual objects with his/her fingers as in a real environment, and Jenga, which is a simulation of the well-known tower building game. A user study is conducted and reported to demonstrate the accuracy, effectiveness and comfort of using this interactive interface.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"5099 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123526224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction of hierarchical B-spline has provided a nice mechanism to control the influence of refinement to the locality for tensor-product B-spline surfaces. This paper extends the idea of hierarchical B-splines to non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surface and a generalized hierarchical NURBS (H-NURBS) is proposed. Based on the modification of control points or weights of the H-NURBS surface, we can paste a NURBS surface onto an existing H-NURBS surface. Two approaches with different mechanisms are proposed: the base plus detail mechanism and the replacement mechanism. Different kinds of interactive devices like mouse, stylus and glove can be used to manipulate the H-NURBS.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134333324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We can also touch and feel surfaces of X3D and VRML objects as well as convert them to solid tangible objects. We can define tangible density and force fields associated with standard and function-defined geometries. Since the function-defined models are small in size, it is possible to perform their collaborative interactive modifications with concurrent synchronous visualization at each client computer with any required level of detail. We illustrate this concept with several application examples based on our plug-in to X3D and VRML browser.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132541501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We previously proposed the method of generating free viewpoint images without any depth estimation. However, it is not so easy to realize real-time image reconstruction based on our previous method. In this paper, we discuss the method to reduce the processing time by dimension reduction for image filtering and CELL-based distributed processing. Especially, the method of high-speed image reconstruction by the CELL processor on SONY PLAYSTATION3 is described in detail. We show some experimental results by using real images.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128425772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By describing the ontology of the virtual objects in the environment to animation procedures, we allow these procedures to create customized animations for an avatar to interact with the environment or other avatars. In this paper, we attempt to realize a semantic virtual environment (SVE) in our MUVE system (called IMNET) with the concept of web 2.0 through three mechanisms: dynamical installation of animation procedures, ontology design of semantic description for virtual objects and avatars, and interaction-oriented message delivery. Based on our demonstrative applications, we have designed example semantics for the objects in the virtual world by the use of ontology. We have used two application scenarios about automatic generation of navigation path and casual interactions between users to illustrate the potential of creating sharable rich contents in a semantic virtual environment.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133590562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With virtual information augmented onto the real scene, an intuitive interface is provided to the distributed users. In the augmented design environment, the users wearing look-around head-mounted devices can move around to view the same spatially aligned part from different perspectives. In addition, manipulations, such as rotating, zooming and translating in one view will not interfere with the manipulations in the other views. While the users have their own personal views, the product models are kept consistent in all the views. To support accurate product design in the augmented design environment, grid-and-snap modes have been developed to facilitate the selection of 3D points and the modifications of features. The user can observe the effects of the design changes in real-time as the modifications are being made in 3D space.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"36 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132738065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the images of real cameras suffer from lens distortion. We present a method to correct the radial distortion caused by camera lens. As the radial distortion correction is achieved via a non-iterative process, the proposed method is computationally efficient and very fast. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed system are verified on the experimental results of several indoor and outdoor images.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132760609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
