However, it is a great challenge to haptically render complex objects. In this paper, a novel haptic rendering algorithm via directional sampling is proposed. We propose haptic box, an intermediate representation of target objects for haptic rendering, which encodes the intersection data of each sample directional ray with the target object. With haptic box, the contact information between a line segment and the target object can be derived by several line-box intersection tests and bilinear interpolations, and can be directly used to evaluate the feedback force. Experimental results show that our algorithm is insensitive to model complexity at the run-time stage and works both effectively and efficiently.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"297 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113968949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process of binding a protein to another is called protein-protein docking. Many automated algorithms have been proposed to find docking configurations that might yield promising protein-protein complexes. However, these automated methods are likely to come up with false positives and have high computational costs. Consequently, Virtual Reality has been used to take advantage of user's experience on the problem; and proposed applications can be further improved. Haptic devices have been used for molecular docking problems; but they are inappropriate for protein-protein docking due to their workspace limitations. Instead of haptic rendering of forces, we provide a novel visual feedback for simulating physicochemical forces of proteins. We propose an interactive 3D application, DockPro, which enables domain experts to come up with dockings of protein-protein couples by using magnetic trackers and gloves in front of a large display.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132088777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a single-layer displacement map cannot present more complex objects because it has only one displacement on every position. In this paper, we introduce the approach to render more complex objects using a multi-layer displacement map. Displacement values of the texture map are arranged by the ascending order. A pair of ordered displacement composes a geometry block and we use this property. For accurate ray search, we store the highest value for odd channels and the lowest value for even channels to generate a quad tree displacement map. Our ray search algorithm finds an accurate intersection between a viewing ray and a displacement using the hierarchical displacement map. We solve aliasing problems on grazing angles occurred in previous methods and render the result scene on real-time.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"121 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123179830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike an open mesh that is of plane topological type, a tubular mesh gives rise to some special issues in parameterization due to its mesh structure. In this paper, we present an edge based parameterization method, in which the edges rather than the vertices of the mesh are treated as the target for parameterization. It improves cutting-based algorithms which cut the mesh to make it a disk topologically. The problem of cutting paths is their zigzag shape that leads to suboptimal parameterizations and finding good cutting paths is usually very difficult. Our proposed method does not need cutting of the mesh. It first parameterizes the edges on the two boundaries of the tubular mesh, then parameterizes the internal edges based on the mean value coordinates, and finally computes the parameters of the mesh vertices. Some examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114529434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
