Visualization of 3D process plant models is an essential feature to support design review in distributed design environment. To improve rendering performance, model simplification algorithms, such as levels of detail (LODs) and hierarchical levels of detail (HLODs), can be applied to process plant models. However, it is difficult to use available general model simplification algorithms to support reviewing complex models in process plant CAD. These algorithms always need unbearable time for preprocessing and are not designed to handle process plant models. They do not take the specific requirements of design review into account and may distort design feature and make them unrecognizable to the reviewer. To efficiently transmit models, various compression technologies can be applied to shrink the data size. However, transmitting the geometric model over the network during visualization is still a bottleneck of rendering performance. In this paper, a new, faster model simplification algorithm is proposed to simplify process plant models. Only the geometric parameters and topology information are transmitted. We compute LODs and HLODs according to the model's geometric parameters and design feature. We demonstrate its performance on complex process plant models composed of tens of millions of triangles. Overall, our approach is able to greatly shorten the preprocessing time and achieve considerable speedups in frame rate with little loss in image quality.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133119309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed application considers common situations with mobile devices such as when a user's hand holds a mobile device while the other hand is free. It also supports natural augmented reality environment such as when a user interacts with augmented reality contents anytime and anywhere without special equipment such as visual markers or tags. In our approach, a virtual object is augmented on the palm of a user's free hand, as if the virtual object is just sitting on the palm, using a palm pose estimation method. The augmented virtual object reacts (e.g. moving or animation) to motions of the hand such as opening or closing the hand based on fingertip tracking. Moreover, it provides tactile interactions with the virtual object by wearing a tactile glove with vibration sensors. This paper describes how to implement the augmented reality application, and preliminary results show its potential as a new approach to mobile augmented reality interaction.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"02 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129470579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient method to solve these problems in regular image-based visual hull framework. With the help of a simple image acquiring platform which involves a glass and a mirror, we can capture images of the object from both upper and lower side at the same time. Using these images, silhouette cones necessary for reconstructing the bottom and the concave surfaces could be generated. Therefore the final rendering result of the object could be significantly improved in accuracy and reality, especially in the parts of bottom and concaves.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"57 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114006689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our aim is to support the traditional free-hand drawing while improving the functionality by imitating the 3D animation in terms of free-viewing and free animation. The system design emphasis is on the feeling of \"what you see is what you get\". In our system a user is allowed to create planar and curved canvases and place them in 3D space with six degrees of freedom. Free-hand strokes are drawn on each canvas by using any of a user's favorite input device; a mouse, a digital pen, etc. Various canvases organized in space form a scene and the animation key frames of those canvases and strokes can be recorded hierarchically to represent different levels of movement in the scene. The camera's movement is recorded when a user tunes the viewing parameters and chooses to add a key frame in the time line for the camera. The system is both intuitive by utilizing the advantage of 2D freehand drawing and has the capability of 3D manipulation of strokes, canvases and a camera without requiring the user to have knowledge of 3D graphics and animation. We demonstrate the usability and efficiency of our system by describing the creation process of several short animation movies.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121259739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed conceptual system provides a simple and effective solution to the on-the-fly parallel solid voxelization by relocating the portions of incoming data from processor to processor. It does not need conventional complicated parallel computing methods, such as load balancing, scheduling etc. This is exactly the advantage of this proposed system. Furthermore, the system only requires practically the same software as ordinary sequential solid voxelization algorithm.","PeriodicalId":182702,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 7th ACM SIGGRAPH International Conference on Virtual-Reality Continuum and Its Applications in Industry","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125030860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
