Though there may not be much difficulty in accessing the learning content using desktop PCs and laptops, accessing the content using mobile devices makes a difficult task because of the varying device capabilities and form factors. Ubiquitous learning systems should consider various factors like support for heterogeneous devices with different screen sizes & resolution, storage, processing power, format handling capabilities and network connectivity. This paper describes various challenges in implementing ubiquitous learning system and need for content adaptation to meet different user requirements and device constraints. It includes different adaptation techniques and implementation details of prototype application being developed. Also, experimental results are discussed for evaluating functionality of the developed system.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116756872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adaptive e-learning systems create new opportunities and at the same time have several research challenges that need to be addressed. The primary requirement of such adaptive systems is the need to create and represent adaptable content effectively. This paper presents a membrane computing model to demonstrate how adaptable content can be represented and used efficiently. The Spiking Neural P System (SNP) is a membrane computing model inspired by the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. This paper proposes the Distributed Spiking Neural P System (DSNP), a variant of the existing Distributed P System, that can be used to represent dynamic and distibuted systems. Temporal relations captured on a time line during authoring of the ecourse, can be automatically converted into an SNP system using the algorithm presented in the paper. An algorithm for the automatic generation of the DSNP from the e-course compositions represented using a linked list of SNPs is also presented in the paper along with experimental results to prove the efficiency and scalability of the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131803094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, organizing, managing, offering and accessing these resources over the web have been key issues for both the research and the educational community. Within this context, over the past years a number of international efforts have led to the development of the IEEE LOM standard as a commonly accepted way for describing educational resources with metadata, facilitating storage, search and retrieval of these resources through web-based repositories. In response to this increased interest, a number of software tools have been developed, so as to facilitate educational metadata authoring of educational resources. However, these tools have a number of limitations, adding extra barriers to the widespread deployment of this process. In this paper, we aim to address this problem by introducing a new web-based tool (ASK-LOM-AT 2.0) that aims to overcome the identified limitations of existing tools and simplify the process of educational metadata authoring for educational resources following the IEEE LOM standard.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114084370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These labs allow an engineer or a student to practice the experiments they are interested in as many times as they want with a flexibility of place and time. Now we have several remote lab technologies that have evolved, implemented and are working to enhance and simplify the education system of how an engineer/ a student learns his laboratory work. This paper presents a roadmap for universities wanting to deliver engineers with solid documented laboratory experience qualified to design goods and services for a sustainable society. Students need a lot of learning and training covering many aspects of practical engineering and science to become true experimenters. Ubiquitous laboratories with free access and many well-designed experiments are required with the possibility to perform every experiment within the infrastructures 24/7. A challenge is how to make the labs and the collection available for learning and assessment of practical experiments. How should the funding of the laboratories be arranged? Should universities without laboratory resources pay a subscription when using remote laboratories and these databases of experiments at other universities? This paper describes a theme to unite the different resources of remote laboratories which offer the learners/ job seekers the ability to access and use a variety of practical equipments situated in different and distant laboratories through internet without the need to physically moving to these laboratories. In fact this is one of the benefits of using Remote Laboratories.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124607113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
