An ICT-enabled pedagogy entails that the teachers take on newer and challenging roles to facilitate an effective teaching-learning process. In this context, our tutorial is an attempt to bring out the key elements of facilitation required in using an ICT-enabled method for teaching-learning. In particular, it will demonstrate that an aptly designed ICT-enabled method of teaching can lead to a higher level-of-learning. The insights, inferences and design of this tutorial have been primarily drawn from engineering classrooms of India. However, whether or not ICT enabled pedagogies can be suitably used for subjects other than engineering as well and similar questions will also be duly addressed in this tutorial. The tutorial has been designed to be experiential in nature wherein it will engage every participant in an interactive session on how to plan, prepare, execute and reflect on an ICT-enabled method of teaching, for a given subject matter.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123115222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Any teaching learning process must be designed to suit the needs of all and must consider all types of learners including people with disabilities. One of the major learning disabilities found related to learners is the problem of reading. Especially for dyslexic reading is a severe problem. In this regard, this paper focuses on the design of a summarization tool that provides a summary of reading material which helps the dyslexic to have a first level understanding of the content.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122882346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the field of education, computers have become an important metaphor to denote technology in the classroom. Keeping this in mind, most teacher education institutes in India have introduced a course in Computers in Education, but due to the paucity of time in the academic year, many teacher education institutes briefly cover the aspects of technology education in their classroom. A methodology was required that would allow the Pre-service teachers learn basic technical knowledge of relevant software effectively and hence allow more time for dwelling into the pedagogical constructs that makes the application technology in the teaching learning process -- effective, interesting, challenging and satisfying. It was in this context that a Self learning material was developed for Open Office Impress -- a free presentation software. Presentation software allows teachers to present text and images, including photographs, in color; to animate text and graphics; and to include audio and video files to a large audience, like the classroom. The cognitive apprenticeship framework specifies four dimensions for designing powerful environments, namely: content, method, sequence, and sociology. This paper discusses adapting an Interactive Video Based Self Learning Module on Open Office Impress in the Dimensions of the Cognitive Apprenticeship Framework. It further discusses the affect of this module on the Quality of Presentation made by Pre-service teachers vis-a-vis their Cognitive Style and their Gender. The results of the study showed that this material augmented the Pre-service teachers' technology skills in directly using, applying and learning technology.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130864301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically, novices find it difficult to understand compiler error messages. Hence a prototype of web based programming assistance tool has been developed to assist them in the programming process. It is an online program development environment to help beginners to debug programs in C language. The debugger component assists to identify the errors and fix them. Hints will be provided to deal with the compiler error messages. The system comprises of a GUI editor, a GCC compiler and a central database. The database stores a list of almost all compiler error messages, and the corresponding fixes and hints. Based on the error messages generated after compilation, queries are sent to the database and the relevant fixes are presented to the programmer.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116257453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A subset of a LMS is the component in which student assessment is managed. In some forms of assessment, such as short-answer questions, the LMS is incapable of evaluating the students' responses and therefore human intervention is necessary. This study leverages the research conducted in recent Natural Language Processing studies to provide a fair, timely and accurate assessment of student short-answers based on the semantic meaning of those answers. A component-based system utilizing a Text Pre-Processing phase and a Word/Synonym Matching phase has been developed to automate the marking process. An evaluation plan is also made to verify the possibility of applying such computerized assessment system in practical situations as well as to reveal areas in which the system could be improved later.","PeriodicalId":162825,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Technology for Education","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122793392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, personalization is the current norm with each learner customizing his/her own Learning environments, not only on his interests but also to his tastes. Personalization of the e-Learning environments for the 'Cognitively Disabled' is still to be evolved, as personalization cannot be left to the discretion of the disabled user. It has to be done by the supporting people like the teacher, therapist or the parent. This manual intervention can be minimized, using Self-Learning environments, which can interact with the child, understand him and dynamically personalize the lesson plans, based on his interests, mood and current attention span.
