However this machine principle has the disadvantage of low energy efficiency in high speed range. An alternative machine principle is the electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM). It enables an additional degree of freedom to control the motor torque efficiently. In this paper an energy efficient control is implemented for an EESM which is designed for the traction application.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121577237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a new concept of peer-to-peer electricity sharing which creates a marketplace for electricity. In this marketplace, the people who can afford power generating sources such as solar panels can sell electricity to people who are unable to afford generating sources or who might have access to electricity but require more electricity at certain times. These ad-hoc microgrids created by sharing of resources provide affordable electricity and are enabled by a Power Management Unit (PMU) described in this paper.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115249068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Modular Multilevel Cascaded Converter (MMCC) based on single star bridge cell (SSBC) is very suitable for STATCOM application at the medium-voltage level in the power system. The dc capacitors voltage balancing control is a critical issue to secure the stable operation of MMCC-SSBC converter. Four different control methods based on power flow analysis have been considered. The performance of each controller is evaluated under steady state or even Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) operation. Each controller has its power flow management and its feature. Experimental test results are given to verify these control methods can well regulated the dc bus voltages under the unbalanced grid voltages.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124929110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fourth-order model of the Cuk converter is derived first and it is simplified to use ISMC. Based on the simplified system model, the ISMC that consists of the equivalent control part plus the switching control part is designed and applied to the Cuk converter in the presence of uncertain variations and unknown disturbances. The closed-loop system is also proved to be exponentially stable. However, to operate at high efficiencies, the bridges must operate with Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) over as wide an operating range as possible. The conventional approach to determine ZVS operation uses time domain analysis with ideal AC coupling inductances, which only approximately identifies the ZVS boundaries. This paper proposes a new approach using frequency domain analysis of the bridge switching patterns, which accurately predicts the ZVS boundaries over a full range of operating conditions while also accommodating more complex AC coupling structures and practical impedance non-idealities. An exact theoretical analysis is presented for two level modulation of the two bridges coupled through a general impedance structure. An analytical solution is then presented for a single coupling impedance, while boundaries for more complex coupling structures and practical impedances are solved by numerical integration. ZVS boundaries for selected systems are validated by matching simulation and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125692075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By employing a compact Medium-Frequency (MF) transformer for isolation, the SST has merits on size and weight. It also provides flexible utilization as a FACTS component. The switching converters are a potential source of Common-Mode (CM) and HF EMI noises. These noises are more nuisance in a SiC device based SST which switches at a high dV/dT at the Medium-Voltage (MV) level resulting in high CM voltages. The SST floating metalic surfaces such as heatsink and the output must be grounded for safety and smooth operation. However there are various significant low impedance paths present, including the parasitics of the compact transformer, which may conduct CM noise to the grid. The generated CM noise may affect the controls. This paper presents the CM and grounding challenges in the multistage integration of a three-phase SST system based on 15kV SiC IGBTs termed as Transformerless Intelligent Power Substation (TIPS). The TIPS interfaces MV 13.8kV and LV 480V grids using MV ac-dc, MV to LV dc-dc dual active bridge and LV dc-ac inverter stages. A study on the CM noise in the TIPS and a passive filter solution for its attenuation is presented in this paper. A time domain simulation considering the passive filter specification is also presented. The experimental results for line to line 3.64kV MV grid integration are presented. A LV prototype is used to verify the complete grounding and the CM choke design at a scaled-down condition.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122440532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The negative sequence component could be added to the gain of frequency feedback loop in the conventional anti-islanding scheme. To keep the power factor regulation, the displacement power factor (DPF) is considered in the tuning of feedback gain. The PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) with low bandwidth is used to replace the nominal frequency in calculating frequency deviation, and this brings the reduction of unnecessary reactive power injection during normal grid connected operation. The experimental results are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, which show that both detection time and NDZ (Non-Detection Zone) are improved. Also, the performance of the proposed method with multiple DG systems is discussed by introducing the equivalent single virtual inverter. The simulation and experimental results show validity of discussions.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122637658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although this topology has received a great deal of attention in recent years by both the research community and industry, hitherto no steady-state model has been developed which accurately captured all the relevant power losses while being computationally light. Hence, the aim of this paper is to introduce a fast MMC loss model which captures the key sources of power losses in steady-state operation. The model only requires information which is known a priori, e.g. datasheet information of the components. The proposed model was compared to a loss model developed by Marquardt. Both models presented similar results under the same assumptions. However, the proposed model captures the switching losses more realistically and considers the temperature of operation of the electronics, as well as the losses of the inductors and cooling system in the overall efficiency of the MMC. To validate these new additions, the proposed steady-state model was compared to a dynamic model. Once again the proposed model was able to capture the different sources of power losses. Nonetheless, results demonstrated that the balancing strategy greatly influences the efficiency of the MMC. Therefore, information regarding the envisioned control strategy is necessary to accurately calculate the efficiency curve of the MMC.","PeriodicalId":160988,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122780363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
