However, due to the parameter differences of the series-connected IGBTs, it is difficult to ensure an equal voltage sharing between the devices during both transient and steady-state operations. This paper proposes a novel active gate drive which operates basing on the active gate charge control strategy. The proposed active gate drive is able to achieve both minimized power loss and proper voltage sharing between the series-connected IGBTs. Generally, when the momentary power interruption is occurred, outputs of a drive system are stopped for the protection. For stable continuous operation, it is sometimes required the restarting strategy which is called as a flying start when the input power is recovered and the rotor is still rotating freely due to the large inertia of high power electric machine. The paper suggests the flying start strategy at momentary power loss. The proposed strategy is composed of the phase-locked loop(PLL) and Double Second-Order Generalized Integrator(DSOGI), based on the measured input voltages at electric machine side and the voltage compensation. The magnitude, frequency and phase angle of the residual voltages are estimated with PLL and DSOGI and the induced initial voltage is compensated considering the operating conditions. With the proposed strategy, the target drive system can be restored to the operation point of a prior failure. An additional insulated-gate bipolar translator (IGBT) with a low voltage rating is required to be connected in series at the output terminal of a conventional half-bridge SM, where the anti-parallel diode of the additional IGBT is used to block the current from the grid to the DC-link side. Moreover, the additional switching loss of the embedded switch is negligible since the switch is turned on all the time. Therefore, compared with the MMC based on the full-bridge (FB) SM or the hybrid topology of half-bridge (HB) and FBSM, the proposed topology not only provides the DC-fault current blocking capability but also has a lower cost and power loss. Through an appropriate selection of subsystem within a point-to-point VSC-HVDC system, a dc-side power dependent admittance is defined. The particularity of this admittance is that, if negative, there is a risk that a dc-side resonance becomes amplified. The dc-side power dependent admittance is measured in a EMT model and compared with a linearized mathematical model, showing good agreement between them. The usefulness of the defined admittance is shown through the assessment of various controller modifications on the dc-network stability enhancement. The proposed control method can adjust the switching frequency of the converter to keep the on-time of switches fixed. According to the loss analysis model in discontinuous current mode operation, the switching frequency is proportional to load current and the efficiency is independent from the load. Moreover, the small signal model of the PSFB converter with the proposed control method is presented. A digital-controlled experimental system is set up. The proposed method is investigated and confirmed by experimental results. Experimental results show that the efficiency and dynamic performance can be improved. As the switching frequency and the filter size influence the output waveform quality, the inverter efficiency (loss) constraint on the switching frequency, and the size constraint on the filter are also taken into consideration. The waveform quality properties and power converter losses are characterized in normalized form for all possible VSI topology and PWM method pairs and the utilization of characterization results are illustrated through 20 kVA and 100kVA grid connected photovoltaic inverter application examples. The performance results are evaluated and comparisons provided. The performance advantage of advanced topologies and PWM methods and their matched pairs is shown.
