The samples were annealed on a hotplate at 500/spl deg/C. The technique yields films crystallized into (111) textured perovskite. The ferroelectric properties of the best film gave a remnant polarization value of 20.0 /spl mu/C/cm/sup 2/ and coercive field of 44 kV/cm. The microstructure of the film was determined to be fine grained and columnar. Permittivity for the sample was determined to be 1100. Indications of factors influencing the lowering of crystallization temperatures were observed.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. For the first time, the crystallographic details, including the ionic coordination, the site occupancies and the thermal anisotropy of a lead-containing tetragonal tungsten bronze crystal are determined. This paper reports the structural refinement results, the site-preference by cations and vacancies, the macroscopic polarization properties derived from the cation displacement, and the apparent valences determined by the bonding distance. Unlike other non-lead-containing ferroelectric tungsten bronzes, significant polarization contribution can be attributed to cations (Pb2/sup +/ and Ba/sup 2/+) at the A2-site. Large anisotropic thermal coefficients found for cations at the A2-site further strengthens the local polarization fluctuation model and suggests the local polarization components are perpendicular to the minor plane along the <110> direction.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. The dielectric and piezoelectric properties as a function of composition and crystal orientation have been evaluated. Both MPB and non-MPB crystals were found to possess high piezoelectric properties. Values of longitudinal electromechanical coupling coefficients (k/sub 33/)>90%, dielectric constants ranging from 3000 to 5000 with low dielectric loss <1% were observed for rhombohedral crystals. Tetragonal crystals with increased PbTiO/sub 3/ content exhibited large thickness coupling coefficients (k/sub T/)>63% with relatively low dielectric constant (/spl sim/1000). Ultrahigh values of piezoelectric coefficients (d/sub 33/)>2000 pC/N were also measured for non-MPB crystals and confirmed by direct E-field strain measurements. These properties are briefly discussed in relation to device performance.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. It was observed that uniaxial compressive stresses have a marked effect on the soft PZT, including reducing the piezoelectric coefficient and depoling the sample at a relatively low stress level. On the other hand, the uniaxial compressive stress increases the piezoelectric coefficients in hard PZT. The different response to the stress between the hard and soft PZT was elucidated here. The influence of uniaxial stress on 0.9PMN-0.1PT depends on the DC electric field applied to it. The change of the elastic compliance with uniaxial stress was also dealt with.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. Highly oriented ZnO films 12.5-/spl mu/m thick were successfully grown for use as transducers having sufficient sensitivity to detect small ultrasound signals inside living samples. The ZnO transducer was mounted in the rod-shaped probe which could rotate mechanically around its axis and shift along the axis. Using this scanning, tissue images were formed in the C-scan mode in a cylindrical plane within the tissue. Preliminary bovine kidney images demonstrate the feasibility of tissue imaging using the miniature, high-frequency transducers mounted in the rod-shaped probe.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96.
