Commercial In-Ag paste, In-Ga alloy, and electroless plated Ni as well as evaporated Al with and without Pt overcoat layer mere chosen as electrode. The contact resistance of electroded samples at or above room temperature was determined using both dc resistance and ac impedance measurements. The aging of contact resistance under cyclic loading from -10 to 85/spl deg/C was also monitored for the prolonged period of time. The effect of heat treatment and protective coating on the stability of Al electrode was determined. Commercial In-Ag paste showed the excellent stability against contact resistance degradation. However, the contact resistance of Al electrode during aging was strongly dependent on the annealing condition and the presence of protective layer.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. The loading consists of a series of increasing compressive stress increments alternating with a series of bipolar electric field cycles. The softest composition has the lowest Young's modulus and shows hysteresis in the electric field cycle that increases as the compressive stress is increased. A distinct yield stress associated with the onset of deformation twinning (depolarization) is evident at around 25 Mpa. After loading to 180 Mpa and unloading, there is a large residual strain. The hardest composition has a higher Young's modulus, shows little or no hysteresis in the electric field cycle until the compressive stress has been applied, has a distinct yield point at around 75 Mpa associated with the onset of deformation twinning, and after loading to 180 Mpa and unloading the non-linear strain is recovered. There is no residual strain. The two compositions that lie between the extremes display intermediate behavior.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. Another significant nearer term application for which BST may be suited is replacement of discrete capacitors now attached to advanced IC's. Specific devices include bypass, decoupling, and switched filter capacitors, often operated at high frequencies. With current SiO/sub 2/ based dielectrics such integrated capacitors may take up from 20% to 50% of the device area; use of higher dielectric constant BST could reduce this by at least a factor of 10. We will discuss properties of MOCVD-grown BST which relate to these capacitor applications, including second order dielectric nonlinearity and leakage currents at useful device operating voltages (3 V). Dielectric constant, nonlinearity and breakdown voltages are found to have a strong dependence on deposition temperature of BST films, so optimum processing conditions will depend on the end device application.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. It was found that the Rainbow samples had a very strong piezoelectric effect when operated in the dome mode. The piezoelectric response decreased gradually with increasing frequency before occurrence of mechanical resonances. The pyroelectric properties of the samples were slightly enhanced due to the coupling of the Rainbow's domed structure with the piezoelectric effect. The domed structure and internal stress of Rainbow ceramics had a minimal impact on their photovoltaic and photoconductive characteristics.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. The PT gel was annealed at various temperatures to produce powder with different particle sizes. The structural variation of the PT powder with annealing temperatures was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystallite size and particle size of the PT powder were measured by XRD and a particle size analyzer, respectively. PT/P(VDF-TrFE) 0-3 composites with a PT volume fraction of 0.4 were prepared by using PT powder of size 30 nm to 270 nm. The permittivities of the composites were measured using an impedance analyzer. After poling, the piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients of the composites were also determined.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. To find an appropriate location for the sensor placement, the vibration displacement distributions of the transducer were measured using a high frequency heterodyne interferometer. The non-linear signal detected by the PZT sensor was processed and the signatures of the higher frequency harmonics were recorded and related to the bonding quality. The degradation in dielectric and piezoelectric properties with decreasing grain size was compensated with a new dopant strategy. This made the materials piezoelectrically softer compensating for reductions in poling efficiency. SonoPanel/sup TM/ transducers with different PZT formulations, varying ceramic volume fractions, and alternate polymer matrices have been developed to meet the requirements for various underwater applications. Transducers have performed well as both sensors and transmitters under hydrostatic pressures up to 6.9 MPa, have survived multiple explosive shocks, and were made to conform to nonplanar surfaces, piezocomposite smart panels, capable of both sensing and actuation for active surface control, are also being developed. The panels utilize monolithic sensor elements built into a 1-3 composite actuator panel. The sensors are net-shape formed, low profile accelerometers uniformly distributed across the panel area.
