Large field-induced piezoelectric coefficients were obtained in these relaxor-type materials at relatively low DC bias (K/sub t/=0.43-0.50 at 5 KV/cm). The electrostrictive transducers have similar sensitivity and bandwidth compared to conventional PZT transducers. By choosing the appropriate composition and process, the sensitivity variation of electrostrictive transducers can be minimized to within 3 dB over the operating temperature range. The clinical results demonstrate the benefit of using electrostrictive materials to obtain elevation aperture control.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. Such a flexure-electrical effect occurs in any substance in the presence of a strain gradient. It was discovered that a.c. voltage arising on the sample faces normal to a strain gradient is directly proportional to the amplitude of sample vibrations and the sample thickness. A rather large value of a.c. voltage and its high temperature stability in the range of 20-200/spl deg/C for both materials under study may be interesting from an applications point of view.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. With the onset of high electric drive levels (>0.6 kV/mm), such materials exhibit increasing dielectric non-linearity and loss as a result of hysteretic ferroelectric domain wall motion. The aims of the present work are to derive the effective high field dielectric and piezoelectric coefficients of hard PZT ceramics by analysis of the measured P-E (polarisation-field) and S-E (strain-field) relationships respectively. The focus of the paper is on the advanced mobility with the desired characteristics of high force, displacement, and operability over a wide temperature range, at the cost of lowest possible mass, volume, and power. A comparison of the various actuation technologies including piezoceramic, shape memory alloys, polymeric actuators and magnetostrictive materials is presented. The comparison suggests piezoceramics to be the most promising candidate. The concept of a flexible microactuator based on tailored films of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate, PLZT, deposited on flexible substrates is described. Such flexible microactuators are expected to offer a multifold enhancement in the force and displacement capabilities over those of the current state-of-the-art actuators based on bulk ceramic materials. Of special interest is the promise of high efficiency actuation from an optimized thin film based flexible bimorph structure by contact-less optical activation.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. Due to the approach in the analysis model, we can quantitatively predict how various modes and their coupling to the thickness resonance change as the aspect ratio of the ceramic plate changes. It is also shown that the input acoustic impedance between a fluid or a solid medium and a composite is dispersive and depends on the medium. These findings will have important implications to the design of the composite, matching layer and backing for a composite ultrasonic transducer.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. Although BaTiO/sub 3/ films had consisted of a perovskite single phase, PZT films were composed of a perovskite phase with second phases of Pb/sub 3/O/sub 4/ and ZrTiO/sub 4/ on the alloy electrode. In order to prevent the second phases forming, the heat treatment time of the electrode was increased to obtain the thicker Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ layer on the alloy electrode. The second phases decreased with increasing the heat treatment time, however, the phases did not disappear. When BaTiO/sub 3/ films were inserted between the electrodes and PZT films, the grain growth of PZT films was promoted by the existence of the BaTiO/sub 3/ buffer layer, finally, the PZT single phase was obtained. As the tan /spl delta/ of the films decreased with decreasing the amount of the second phases, it became 3.9%, the film of which possessed a remanent polarization of 20 /spl mu/C/cm/sup 2/.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96. The modification is in the method of forming the mold. Two new types of sacrificial polymer molds were investigated. In one of the methods, dental wax sheets /spl sim/1.25 mm thick were punched to get the negative of the desired ceramic structure. The wax molds were infiltrated with a slurry containing a high solids loading of PZT particles. Particle size distribution of the PZT powder was controlled to optimize the slurry viscosity and solids loading. After drying, the molds were burned out, and the PZT structures sintered to high density in a controlled lead atmosphere. Various structures with 1-3 rods ranging in size from 50 to 500-/spl mu/m in diameter, and with shapes inducing diamonds, hexagons, triangles, squares, and cylinders were fabricated. In another method, the mold was developed by bundling of hollow polyester fibers (ID=240-/spl mu/m) and filling them with PZT slurry. The sintered rod structures obtained from either type of molds were backfilled with polymer, polished, electroded and poled. The processing of the piezocomposites and their electromechanical properties will be presented.","PeriodicalId":14772,"journal":{"name":"ISAF '96.
