{"title":"THE MACROCOSMIC MAS̱NAVĪ","authors":"Michael Pifer","doi":"10.2307/j.ctv1pdrqzm.6","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv1pdrqzm.6","url":null,"abstract":"This chapter offers a succinct close reading of the first story of Rumi’s Masnavi, which ushers its audience into the hermeneutics of the entire work. Notably, this story depicts a dialogue between Rumi and his foremost student, Husam al-Din Chalabi, a native of Anatolia who was likely of Kurdish descent. Rumi may have dictated the Masnavi, but it was Husam al-Din who copied it, recited it back to his master in a strong voice, and taught others to read his manuscript aloud. This chapter argues that the Masnavi is thus shaped by a form of dialogism, not only between Rumi and Husam al-Din, but also by the text and its audience, who performatively partake in the dynamics of its opening story: a strange encounter between a king, in need of spiritual instruction, and a visitor from another realm. When we read the Masnavi, we are also reading a miniature of Anatolia, the product of a literary field shaped by authors and audiences in different ways.","PeriodicalId":129161,"journal":{"name":"Kindred Voices","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117212402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas Rumi is seen as generative and productive, Sultan Valad’s poetry is viewed as less vital and reductive. In many ways, this assumption extends to the earliest literary works composed in Anatolian Turkish, since Sultan Valad helped to inaugurate Turkish as a literary language. He composed the Rabab-nama (Book of the Rebec) in Arabic, Persian, Greek, and Turkish, encoding these languages in the enticing meter of his father’s masterwork. Although the concept of imitation was multifaceted in pre-modern Anatolia, this chapter shows that Sultan Valad did not conceive of literary emulation as a reductive, anxiety riddled act. Instead, by ‘following’ in the style of his father, Sultan Valad constructed a new literary genealogy for his interpretive community—a genealogy that encompassed not only works of Persian poetry, but also Greek and Turkish, now seen as fit to make meaning Islamically.","PeriodicalId":129161,"journal":{"name":"Kindred Voices","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128482811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This portfolio of compositional techniques often set the terms of how this multilingual dialogue unfolded, at least insofar as it sought to make cross-cultural contact legible (or permissible) in a particular manner. The epilogue of Kindred Voices therefore builds upon the case for considering this adaptive portfolio as greater than the sum of its parts. Compounded over time, these practices helped to shape a widespread sense of what the ‘literary’ is—what the literary looks like, what it speaks of, and what it sounds like—across multiple languages and religious communities in medieval Rum.","PeriodicalId":129161,"journal":{"name":"Kindred Voices","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129244131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here one finds Gülşehri and Aşık Paşa, two of the earliest poets of Anatolian Turkish, adapting the poetry of Rumi for new ends. Not only did these poets fashion a literary genealogy that bound Turkish poetry to its Persian and Arabic antecedents, but they also composed verse in a dizzying array of languages, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish—and, in one case, even Armenian. Far from spurning the poetry of ‘others,’ the earliest poets of Anatolian Turkish sought to preserve difference—linguistic, ethnic, devotional—within an Islamic hermeneutic frame.","PeriodicalId":129161,"journal":{"name":"Kindred Voices","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121291122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although studies on Rumi place an emphasis on his later encounter with Shams al-Din Tabrizi, a peripatetic mystic who became Rumi’s spiritual guide, this chapter reconstructs the ways in which medieval Anatolia shaped Rumi’s poetic sensibilities. It particularly examines a metaphor employed by Rumi—amikhtan, or ‘to mix’—that simultaneously describes his own ‘mixing’ with the peoples of Rum, as well as illuminates his adaptive practice of ‘mixing’ together disparate literary styles, themes, tropes, and sources in the creation of something new. This chapter establishes a pattern of omnivorous adaptation that is revisited throughout the book.","PeriodicalId":129161,"journal":{"name":"Kindred Voices","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116483638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
