The aim of this review was to map existing psychological interventions used to treat dental anxiety for patients with a history of torture, abuse, or dental anxiety/phobia. The review was prospectively registered (Open Science Framework). Following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scoping review methodology, six databases (MEDLINE ALL [Ovid], Embase [Ovid], PsycInfo [Ovid], Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) [EBSCO]) were systematically searched. A total of 1743 studies from 1984 to 2024 were retrieved and screened, resulting in 39 articles meeting the predefined inclusion criteria. This review reveals a notable gap: Minimal research exists on psychological interventions treating dental anxiety for patients with a history of torture or abuse. In contrast, studies on patients with dental anxiety or phobia highlight a range of effective treatments demonstrating positive outcomes. However, many of these studies lacked detailed reporting on patient comorbidities and dropout rates, limiting a comprehensive understanding of their findings. Therefore, further research is needed to explore psychological interventions for survivors of torture and abuse.</p>","PeriodicalId":11983,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Oral Sciences","volume":"133 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eos.70018","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144233549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sixty-five children aged 5–9 years with a total of 81 primary mandibular second molars indicated for pulpotomy were included in the study. The teeth were randomly divided into the following three groups according to the pulpotomy agents used: ferric sulfate, herbal hemostatic agent, or Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Following pulpotomy treatments, the patients were followed up for 12 months. Pearson Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used for statistical analysis. At the end of the follow-up period, the clinical success rates for ferric sulfate, the herbal hemostatic agent, and the Er,Cr:YSGG laser were 96, 100, and 100%, respectively, while the radiographic success rates were 76, 73, and 96%, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between treatments with respect to radiographic success rates, with the Er,Cr:YSGG laser showing a higher success rate compared with the other groups. Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that the Er,Cr:YSGG laser can be used as a hemostatic agent in the pulpotomy of primary teeth and is considered a suitable alternative to ferric sulfate and the herbal hemostatic agent.</p>","PeriodicalId":11983,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Oral Sciences","volume":"133 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eos.70022","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144233548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One hundred extracted single-root mandibular premolars were artificially perforated at five distinct diameters (0.25–1.25 mm), located 5 mm above the root apex. The teeth were then divided into 10 groups based on perforation size and kinematic subgroup (rotary, reciprocation; <i>n </i>= 10/subgroup). Actual distances to the perforation site (actual length) were measured under a dental operating microscope. Electronic distances (electronic length) were determined using an endodontic motor with an integrated electronic apex locator using rotary or reciprocating instrumentation kinematics during root canal treatment. To quantify the actual length to the electronic length discrepancies, individual tooth measurements were compared. The integrated electronic apex locator failed to identify perforations ≤ 0.50 mm in diameter. Electronic length measurements were similarly accurate for 1.00 and 1.25 mm perforations but more precise than for 0.75 mm perforations. Instrumentation kinematics did not affect the electronic length measurement accuracy. Integrated electronic apex locators failed to detect small perforations during root canal treatment. The perforation diameter influenced the detection accuracy of integrated electronic apex locators, whereas kinematics had no effect.</p>","PeriodicalId":11983,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Oral Sciences","volume":"133 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eos.70020","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144224817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ceramic specimens (5Y-PSZ, <i>n</i> = 72; PICN, <i>n</i> = 60) were prepared for testing after cementation onto glass fiber-reinforced resin-based composite tooth analogs. The 5Y-PSZ specimens underwent tribochemical silica coating before cementation. Specimens intended for compressive strength evaluation were mechanically cycled (500,000 cycles) before testing. A microtensile bond strength test was used to evaluate adhesive strength, with specimens sectioned into microbars (1 mm<sup>2</sup> cross-section) and loaded until fracture. If pre-test failures occurred, bond strength was assessed using microshear tests. PICN restorations showed significantly higher compressive strength than 5Y-PSZ. For PICN, self-adhesive resin cement yielded the highest compressive strength. For adhesive strength, PICN restorations cemented with self-adhesive or RM-GI cements outperformed GI. The 5Y-PSZ+R combination showed the highest microshear bond strength, superior to 5Y-PSZ+RM-GI and 5Y-PSZ+GI. Resin cements showed higher compressive and adhesive strengths for PICN than glass ionomer-based cements. For 5Y-PSZ, the cement type did not significantly affect compressive strength. Cancer stem-like cells are a small population of cancer cells within tumors that drive recurrence and metastasis. They are often resistant to conventional treatments. Immunotherapy has shown promise against cancer stem-like cells, particularly with the use of cytotoxic T lymphocytes targeting specific markers. Survivin, an apoptosis protein inhibitor, is overexpressed in several malignancies, including oral cancer, and is associated with tumor recurrence and reduced survival. Survivin-2B-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes were produced and evaluated for their ability to target CD44+ (cancer stem-like cells) and CD44− cells (non-cancer stem-like cells), respectively, from oral cancer cell lines (HSC-2 and HSC-3, respectively). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis confirmed similar survivin-2B expression in both cell types. Cytotoxic T lymphocyte assays revealed the effective lysis of both cancer stem-like cells and CD44− cell populations, supporting the potential of survivin-2B-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes to overcome cancer stem-like cell-associated resistance. These findings suggest that survivin-2B peptide vaccines are effective in preventing cancer relapse by targeting cancer stem-like cells, with future directions aimed at developing multipeptide “cocktail” vaccines to reduce the risk of immune evasion.</p>","PeriodicalId":11983,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Oral Sciences","volume":"133 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eos.70019","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144119208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Proprioception was assessed with a laser by noting the deviation from the center target in centimeters. Neck pain severity was assessed with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and mood was assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Individuals with severe dysphagia demonstrated statistically significantly greater proprioceptive impairment in cervical extension and right rotation. A significant difference was also found between the two groups in terms of clinical swallowing evaluations, neck pain status, and mood measurements. Shear bond strength (SBS) tests, surface roughness, and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) evaluations were performed on 180 specimens (7×12×2 mm<sup>3</sup> and 5×5×3 mm<sup>3</sup>, respectively) of ceramic (IPS Empress) and hybrid ceramic (Cerasmart270) blocks. Samples were thermocycled (5°C–55°C, 5000 cycles) and silica-coated alumina, Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, or bioactive-glass were used for surface conditioning. Resin composite was applied on substrate using two- (Tokuyama Universal) or one-bottle (G-Premio) universal adhesives, combined with the same brand universal shade composites (Omnichroma, Essentia Universal). SBS values were measured using a universal testing machine; failure types were analyzed using a stereomicroscope. Surface roughness was assessed with a profilometer, followed by SEM. Statistical analysis included ANOVA, Tukey HSD, and Fisher's Exact tests. The highest mean SBS values were observed for ceramics in conjunction with two-bottle universal adhesives. No statistically significant differences were found in the SBS values for different surface conditioning treatments except for hybrid ceramic conditioned with Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. Bioactive-glass and silica-coated alumina caused similar surface roughness as indicated by the SEM images. The retinoid X receptor (RXR) is a nuclear receptor that modulates a variety of biological processes related to cancer, including apoptosis, cellular adhesion, and immune function. A number of cancers exhibit aberrant expression and altered function of the RXR isoform alpha (RXRA), but the polymorphisms in the RXRA gene have not been investigated previously in patients with oral cancer. The current study examined the RXRA rs7864987 and rs3118523 genetic variants, assessed by the real-time PCR Taq-Man method, in 95 HPV-negative OSCC patients and 101 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that RXRA rs7864987 was significantly associated with worse overall survival and showed a tendency toward lower recurrence-free survival when compared with the wild-type allele carriers (combined TC+TT genotypes) to the mutant genotype CC. RXRA rs7864987, however, did not independently predict overall survival. The C allele of the RXRA rs3118523 genetic variant was associated with a reduced risk of OSCC. Our study indicates that polymorphisms of the RXRA gene may be prognostic and disease-predisposing genetic factors for OSCC. Two surface treatments (hydrofluoric acid [HF] etching and surface roughening using a diamond disc) were investigated alongside two bonding methods utilizing either a universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal, 3M) or a separate silane primer and adhesive (Intraoral Repair Kit, BISCO). Bond strength was measured using shear forces, and light microscopy was used to analyse the fracture mode. The findings indicate that the bonding method plays a more significant role than surface treatment for increasing bond strength since bond strength was similar following either roughening or HF acid etching. The separate silane primer and adhesive demonstrated superior bond strength over the universal adhesive, despite both containing silane, and this was attributed to differences in silane monomer stability. Selecting an appropriate bonding method, specifically using separate silane primer, enhances bond strength in composite repairs. This approach may mitigate the known risks associated with HF and addresses clinical challenges by optimizing the bond stability between feldspathic porcelain and composite resin.</p>","PeriodicalId":11983,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Oral Sciences","volume":"133 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2025-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/eos.70014","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143985271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Databases included PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, EMBASE, Lilacs, LIVIVO, and gray literature. Eligibility criteria included in vitro studies using human dentin, which assessed bond strength through microtensile tests after applying mussel-inspired primers. Exclusion criteria were studies evaluating bond strength to enamel, animal dentin, and ceramics, those not using the microtensile test, or those conducting immediate evaluation only. The RoBDEMAT tool was used for risk-of-bias analysis. Two independent reviewers screened 5522 articles, and seven were selected. The studies showed a similar risk of bias performance, with insufficient reporting of different parameters, while not presenting significant publication bias. Meta-analysis revealed significantly higher bond strength in specimens treated with mussel-inspired monomers after thermocycling. Across studies, no substantial reduction in heterogeneity was observed using the leave-one-out method.
