Bovine root canals were endodontically prepared and filled in preparation for the dye penetration test with toluidine blue solution. All sealers exhibited contact angles similar to or lower than dentin and displayed superior consistency. Among the sealers, organic sealers used without EDTA treatment showed reduced dye penetration compared to inorganic sealers. However, some inorganic and organic sealers showed dye penetration in the sealer and dentin of root canals subjected to EDTA treatment. In conclusion, the single-cone obturation technique, combined with these endodontic sealers, achieved close contact with root canal dentin due to their wettability and consistency. However, the sealing ability of certain sealers was influenced by EDTA treatment.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140684291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Extracted human molars were classified into four groups, depending on the coating technique: No coating (None), single coating (1-coating), double coating (2-coating), and flowable resin-coating (Combination). The inlays were bonded with one of the three materials: Panavia V5 (V5), Rely X Ultimate (RXU), and Calibra Ceram (CC). The differences with regard to adaptation were not significant. In the case of μTBS data for V5, no significant differences were observed, whereas for RXU, μTBS values for Combination statistically exceeded those for None and 1-coating. For CC, μTBS values for Combination statistically exceeded those for None, 1-coating, and 2-coating. The coating techniques did not influence the adaptation but influenced the bond strength, and Combination performed the best.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140684049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Senescent cells may play a pivotal role in this delay, given the well-established association between diabetes, senescent cells, and wound healing. Here, we demonstrated an increase in p21- or p16-positive senescent cells in the epithelial and connective tissues of extraction sockets in type 2 diabetic rats compared to those in control rats. Between 7 and 14 days after tooth extraction, a decrease in senescent cells and improvement in re-epithelialization failure were observed in the epithelium, while an increase in senescent cells and persistence of inflammation were observed in the connective tissue. These results suggest that cellular senescence may have been induced by diabetes and contributed to delayed mucosal healing by suppressing re-epithelization and persistent inflammation. These findings provide new targets for treatment using biomaterials, cells, and drugs.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140684071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two deep learning models, VGG16 and DenseNet-121, were used in this retrospective study. In total, 600 lateral cephalograms were analyzed. A saliency map was generated by gradient-weighted class activation mapping for each output. The two deep learning models achieved high values in each performance metric according to accuracy, sensitivity (recall), precision, F1 score, and areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Both models showed substantial differences in the positions indicated in saliency maps for male and female images. The positions in saliency maps also differed between VGG16 and DenseNet-121, regardless of sex. This analysis of our proposed system suggested that sex estimation from lateral cephalograms can be achieved with high accuracy using deep learning.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140712994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study comprehensively explores the prosthetic screw rupture in titanium (Ti) and zirconia (ZrO2) superstructures under wet and dry conditions. Superstructures were fabricated using digital technology and subjected to tightening torque trials. Experimental results suggested that the implications of the conventionally recommended torque of 15 N•cm differ significantly between dry and wet environments. Both Ti and ZrO2 exhibited preloads of >30 N•cm under dry conditions; however, differences emerged under wet conditions. In addition, screw rupture posed a prominent clinical challenge -particularly during long-term cyclic loading. Notably, the ZrO2 superstructures exhibited a greater resistance to breaking torque than that of Ti. This study underscores the importance of reevaluating torque recommendations with consideration to the distinct characteristics of Ti and ZrO2 in diverse environments.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140713862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A five-layer mouthguard sheet material was previously developed using laminated ethylene vinyl acetate and polyolefin copolymer resin. In this study, the shock absorption capacity and dispersion capability of the new sheet material were investigated and compared with those of other materials. Impact testing for the new sheet material showed that the force required to displace the sheet by 1 mm was significantly higher at all thicknesses (p<0.001), whereas the puncture energy and displacement were significantly lower than those for ethylene vinyl acetate (p<0.05). The five-layer mouthguard sheet material successfully absorbed and resisted shock. Therefore, the sheet material potentially increases resistance to applied deformation in teeth and alveolar bone and maintains structure. The five-layer sheet material could expand the range of mouthguard products and help prevent oral trauma.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140738075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three SARs, one experimental, and two commercially available products, were used. The study parameters were shear bond strength (SBS), microleakage, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluation of bonding interfaces. The SBS of the materials was 14.1-15.1 MPa to enamel, 22.2-23.2 MPa to etched enamel, and 7.4-10.7 MPa to dentin. Specimens with pre-etching showed lower microleakage scores than those without pre-etching. The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop a novel bioactive sealant containing calcium fluoride nanoparticles (nCaF2) and antibacterial dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM), and (2) investigate mechanical performance, F recharge and re-release, microleakage, sealing ability and cytotoxicity. Helioseal F served as commercial control. The initial F release from sealant containing 20% nCaF2 was 25-fold that of Helioseal F. After ion exhaustion and recharge, the F re-release from bioactive sealant did not decrease with increasing number of recharge and re-release cycles. Elastic modulus of new bioactive sealant was 44% higher than Helioseal F. The new sealant had excellent sealing, minimal microleakage, and good cytocompatibility. Hence, the nanostructured sealant had substantial and sustained F release and antibacterial activity, good sealing ability and biocompatibility. The novel bioactive nCaF2 sealant is promising to provide long-term F ions for caries prevention.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140736273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three different zirconia frameworks were assessed: attaching mechanical retentive devices on glaze and opaque porcelain materials (GL and OP groups, respectively), and no attaching mechanical retentive devices (ND group). The frameworks were layered using feldspathic porcelain (FP veneer) and indirect composite resin (IC veneer). Fracture load of the specimens was measured. In FP veneer, the GL group recorded the highest fracture load. In the IC veneer, the GL and OP groups had significantly higher fracture load than the ND group. The fracture resistance of IZCs can be enhanced by applying glaze material before attaching mechanical retentive devices for porcelain layering. The mechanical retentive devices effectively yielded mechanical interlocking between the zirconia frameworks and the IC veneer in GL and OP groups.","PeriodicalId":11065,"journal":{"name":"Dental materials journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140739715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
