Over fifty years prior, medications, for example, amitriptyline (Elavil) and lithium were known not connected with significant increments in weight and notwithstanding new eras of psychotropic medications, this unwelcome symptom has held on. The amount of weight is picked up changes however when all is said in one state of mind stabilizers and antipsychotics medications cause more generous weight pick up than antidepressants. Two antipsychotics, clozapine (Clozaril) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) are connected with the best pervasiveness of weight addition; up to 31% of patients treated with clozapine and 40% with olanzapine build their weight amid treatment. Some temperament stabilizers, for example, valproate (Depakote) likewise are connected with an also high rate of weight addition. Worksite wellness programs benefit from developing tailored interventions that consider employees’ health-related knowledge and self-efficacy to change behavior. Correction is a high stress occupation with elevated rates of overweight and obesity. Poor stress management and barriers to achieve optimal health in the work environment increases the need for adequate knowledge and self-efficacy, or the level of confidence to eat healthy and be physically active. This cross-sectional pilot study used a sample of sixteen correctional employees who participated in a Nutrition and Physical Activity Questionnaire. This survey assesses knowledge and self-efficacy for nutrition and physical activity and current health behaviors, such as current dietary habits and level of physical activity. Demographic and anthropometric data were also collected for statistical analyses. Participants were primarily male correction officers working first shift with a mean (±SE) BMI of 29 (±1.05) kg/m2, classified as overweight. Multiple regression analyses revealed that knowledge and self-efficacy scores predicted variation in BMI when controlling for other scores in the model. Findings from this study may be applicable for future health promotion interventions in high-risk occupations. In high-risk occupations such as corrections, understanding environmental and organizational barriers to achieving good health and reducing chronic disease risk is important. However, in addition to reducing these barriers, increasing knowledge, improving skills and self-efficacy to achieve good health are also critical in order to develop effective interventions for this population.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70446961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The participants were directed to an ambulatory clinic in King Abdulaziz Hospital where they had their anthropometric measurements taken. A total of 521 children (283 male and 238 female) provided complete data for the analysis. \u0000Results: There was no significant association found between breastfeeding and a higher BMI or weight, however, there was a significant association between artificial feeding and a higher waist to hip ratio (P value= .030). Also, appetite had a P-value=0.0001, which signifies a relation between BF and appetite, 117 children (36.4%) were breastfed and they have decreased appetite, while 93 (29.0%) were breastfed and had an increased appetite. As for the duration, males who have been breastfed for a complete two years were 30 and who have been breastfeed for 18 months were 15, breastfed for one year were 33, but 72 males were breastfed for less than a year. \u0000Conclusion: While there was no significant association found between breastfeeding and a higher BMI or weight, however, there was a significant association between artificial feeding and a higher waist to hip ratio; Which entails a higher risk for cardiopulmonary disease. Also, appetite control in breastfed infants had a significant effect, which indicates that there is an inverse relation between breastfeeding and appetite. As for the duration, prolonged duration of breastfeeding had a more protective effect on obesity.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70446784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous evidence supports that oxidative stress plays a big role in metabolic syndrome (MS)-related manifestations. Recently blood markers like high sensitive-C reactive protein (hs-CRP) and serum lipid profiles are widely used clinical parameters. However, it is unknown if whether antioxidant capacity is related to these changes or not. This study was designed to explore if the concentration of blood markers (triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, Hs-CRP) is associated to antioxidant capacity in hyperlipidaemia rats. High fructose diet (HFD) was orally given to rats for 80 days to establish hypertriglyceridemia and blood tests were carried on at different time intervals up to 80th day. Serum triglycerides, glucose, glucose, Hs- CRP, SOD, Catalase and LPO were recorded at 50th and 80th days. At last we assessed m- RNA expression of SOD and catalase in WBC. The gradual rise in activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and ABTS.+(2,2'- azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)-scavenging potential was recorded without any rise in the serum lipid peroxidation- products, triglycerides (TG), glucose and hs-CRP up to 50th day of HFD feeding. However these changes were reversed on 80th day. The RT-PCR for SOD and catalase mRNA in white blood cells (WBC) also showed similar biphasic. This study suggests that the initial rise in blood antioxidant enzymes to their maximum capability, in early days as adaptive mechanism to encounter the oxidative damage from oxygen free radicals. Thus raised activity of catalase and SOD in blood could be considered as one of the significant biomarkers for early diagnosis of adverse metabolic changes when there is no clinical symptom to MS. This study could be helpful in developing pre-diagnostic parameters to persons, who are likely to develop MS.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2161-0509.1000172","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70447271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though overweight and obesity are not life threatening, they qualify themselves as a disease entity. The bulk of literature on obesity says that the external environment largely influences the increase in food intake and is termed scientifically as “obesogenic environment”. A “dual approach” that uses both traditional and holistic health can be used to curb this rising trend. Dietary approaches like low calorie diets and increased physical activity are recommended for weight management and prevention of diseases. A number of studies indicate that there is an increased interest in enhancing the use of herbs, bioactive components of foods, traditional diets; owing to their wide spectrum of therapeutic properties for obesity and for the armed forces personnel (under the hypocaloric rations in the field). Therefore, taking the existing scenario of obesity into consideration and the protective role of calorie restriction, this paper provides an insight into the highly convoluted process of dietary restriction and highlights the implications of hypocaloric diets.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"01 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2161-0509.1000S1006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70451502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
