AD is a common disorder, frequently complicated by asthma-like symptoms, we debate either disorder and conclude that both AR and asthma can afflict most babies with AD, especially when both parents smoke. We confirm our previous statistics, according to which little children not fed breast milk may react to smallest doses of allergens.

The patient could be empowered to act on insulin dose and/or on other aspects (calorie intake, therapeutically efforts and sleep schedule etc.) regarding the achievement of the final therapeutic targets. \u0000Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the impact of the message perceived by patients with new diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus on the means used in achieving metabolic control at 3 months of treatment after an initial educational program. \u0000Method: We performed a retrospective, case-control study of 143 patients with new diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus patients admitted to general hospital wards to investigate the relationship between remaining messages after attending our educational program with all methods to achieve adequate metabolic control. It was hypothesized that message have a great impact considering all methods to achieve this targets and are associated with a greater impact of dose insulin. \u0000Result: At the moment of evaluation we find that the dose of insulin is significantly different between the two lots: 0.43 ± 0.02 UI/Kgc vs. 0.13 ± 0.01 UI/Kgc, p <0.05; and the level of physical therapeutic effort is also significantly different 2.12 ± 0.35 MET/day vs. 3.51 ± 0.32 MET/day, p<0.05. At the same time weight loss, as well as HbA1c levels that the groups reached, have statistical significance (p<0.05). \u0000Conclusion: We could say at the final of our study that the main message of our program is associated with a lower dose of insulin used for treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

We aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D level and coronary artery calcium score (CACS). \u0000Patients methods: We investigated 303 consecutive patients referred to an outpatient clinic for CACS. The 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH) D] levels were checked within three months of CACS evaluation. Vitamin D levels of <30 and <20 ng/mL were used as thresholds of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency, respectively. The correlation between CACS and vitamin D was assessed. Unadjusted and covariate-adjusted logistic regression analyses were used to predict positive CACS. \u0000Results: The mean age in this study is 61.8 ± 11.8 years (39.9% female). The majority of patients enrolled were Caucasian (87.4%). Median (interquartile range) serum 25(OH) D concentration was 30.0 (23.0, 39.0) ng/ml. Vitamin D was insufficient ( 0) was prevalent in 206 (68%) participants. In the unadjusted model, the 25 (OH) D levels were not associated with the prevalence of CACS among all cases or among patients with positive CACS. Logistic regression models, after controlling for risk factors, did not change the results. In addition, among the 206 participants with prevalent CACS, 25 (OH) D levels were not associated with CACS severity. \u0000Conclusions: Our single centre retrospective study in a population with low prevalence of vitamin D deficiency failed to find a significant relation between 25(OH) D level and CACS even when adjusted for risk factors.

Broadly speaking, food justice encompasses a vision of social, environmental, and economic justice; improved nutrition and health; and community activism [2]. Sometimes viewed as an amalgamation of the concerns of alternative food movements and environmental rights, food justice addresses the disproportionate burden of environmental barriers to healthy food experienced by low-income communities and communities of color [3,4]. The concept of food justice aligns itself with the goals of social justice, which demand recognition of human rights, equal opportunity, and fair treatment. Existing food justice literature calls for the mainstream, or global, food system to address issues of social justice [5].

The aim of de present study was to evaluate Total Antioxidant Status and endogenous antioxidant enzymes in metabolic syndrome patients after consumption of a citrus-based juice compared with control groups. Before, and at sixth month after treatment the following parameters were determined: Total Antioxidant Status, Superoxide Dismutase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Glutathione Reductases. After six months of citrus-based juice consuming, there was no significant differences at 95% confidence in Total Antioxidant Status between three groups, although it was found significant differences between groups in values of three antioxidant enzymes analysed. As a conclusion, the intake of a citrus-based juice increases the levels of antioxidant enzymes, despite do not increase the Total Antioxidant Status after its intake during 6 months.

Toxicological investigations were also carried out on the biscuit developed alongside a commercial biscuit using some selected parameters. Proximate, mineral and vitamin composition of the biscuit were determined. Rats were fed with the high nutrient biscuits, commercial biscuit and normal rat feed for twenty-eight (28) days and were sacrificed by cervical dislocation. The Liver, heart and kidney tissues were analysed for liver (Alanine amino transferase [ALT], Alkaline Phosphatase [ALP], Aspartate amino transferase [AST], Albumin [ALB], Bilirubin [BIL] Total protein (TP)) and kidney (creatinine [CREA] and urea) enzyme and protein levels, including glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione –S- transferase, catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels as well as lipid profiles which cover for total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Feeding on the biscuits let to the significant (P<0.05) decrease in AST, ALT, ALP, BIL, urea and creatinine levels. However rats fed with the high nutrient biscuit (BRB) had lower concentration of these enzymes and proteins when compared to the conventional biscuit (ARB) and the control (BRC) although there was increase in the ALB and TP content of the BRB group compared to ARB and BRC. Furthermore BRB had significant reduction in the TC, TG, LDL, and HDL concentration followed by the ARB when compared to the BRC groups. Moreover there was significant increase in the levels of the antioxidant enzymes and decrease in malondialdehyde production in the liver, heart and kidney of BRB when compared to other groups. This result indicates high nutritional properties and antioxidant potential of the biscuits. Therefore the high nutrient biscuit could be used as functional food and an adjunct dietary therapy for malnourished children.

These are required for physiological and biochemical functioning of the body, but at higher concentration they causes the oxidative damage. In fact non-essential metals like (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd)) are more noxious even at very low concentration. It’s important to note that heavy metals are present in soil, air and water can easily enter into the organisms. Literature highlighted the role of metals like chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) in oxidative damage. Fenton chemistry/Haber-Weiss reaction are most extensively studied mechanisms by which heavy metals produces reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) and ultimately causes oxidative stress. Both redox-active and inactive metals can diminish cellular antioxidant system specifically thiol- containing enzymes and antioxidants and may lead to cellular death. This review will contribute in providing valuable information on metallic contents of selected plants. For the purpose, data has been collected from the literature regarding ten mineral contents (sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn)) of 100 medicinal plants grown in Pakistan. The metallic contents shows that majority of the plants contain optimum values as compared with daily mineral intake standards. However, several factors may account for variations in mineral concentration, which include soil composition, different geographic areas and environmental changes.

Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is an extract obtained by culturing mycelia of Basidiomycota. AHCC is reported to attenuate several experimental animal infection models. We hypothesized that AHCC could attenuate pulmonary M. avium disease in mice. \u0000Methods: Mycobacterium avium (108 cfu/head) was administered intratracheally into mice (C57/BL6). Infected mice were supplied with 1,000 mg/kg/day of AHCC by oral administration until euthanasia. The mice were sacrificed at seven days later or 21 days later after M. avium infection. The lung homogenates were cultured on Middlebrook 7H10 agar plates for bacterial colony counts. Additionally, the number of inflammatory cells in the lungs was analyzed by FACS. Tissue sections of the lungs were stained by hematoxylin and eosin or Ziehl-Neelsen methods. In addition, the number of bacterial colonies in the \u0000macrophages was counted in vitro. Approximately 1x106 macrophages were incubated with M. avium at an MOI of 10 with or without 1 mg/ml of AHCC. \u0000Results: The administration of AHCC improved lung inflammation caused by M. avium according to the histology results and decreased number of M. avium in the lungs. In the analysis of lung inflammatory cells, the number of TNFR1 cells and NK cells remained unchanged by AHCC administration, however, the number of TNFR2 cells slightly increased. There was no difference in the number of M. avium in macrophages treated with or without AHCC in the in vitro study. \u0000Conclusion: AHCC plays a protective role in a murine model of pulmonary M. avium disease.

Data were extracted from the electronic employee medical record. \u0000Results: Almost 73% of the study population was born in Israel, and 73.6% of the population was female. Serum vitamin B12 levels were significantly lower in Israeli born women than in women born outside of Israel: 294±119.9 vs. 320±121.7pmol/L. Land of birth and sex were significant, independent predictors of serum vitamin B12 levels even after controlling for age and year in which the serum vitamin B12 was measured. In a logistic regression model of serum vitamin B12 < 350 pmol/L, land of birth emerged as the only significant, independent predictor, such that being born in Israel increased odds of serum vitamin B12 < 350 pmol/L by a relative 44% (95% CI 17-78%, p=0.001). \u0000Discussion: Wide serum vitamin B12 level variability in heterogeneous populations suggests that cut-offs for deficiency may need to be subgroup-specific in order to be clinically meaningful.
