They and their practices are considered as the model all over the world, be it technology, food habits, medical treatments or lifestyle issues-This trend is especially true in the case of medical practice and patient care issues. In other words it appears that the trendsetter for all our activities in all major areas of human life is now USA. Though there are several positive trends to be copied, the negative trends in USA outnumber the positive ones and in one sentence one can say very confidently that the overall impact on the rest of the world by USA is against sustainable development, against sustainable health care and even sustenance of human life on earth. The way it influences practice of the doctors all over the world is phenomenal and is detrimental. Outwardly they appear to be very much concerned about welfare of the rest of the world and humanity, but deep inside things are different.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69977336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite several decades of work in improving childhood nutrition in Ethiopia, stunting remains a major public health concern with lack of evidence on its effect on school performance. The primary aim of this study is to addresses this gap by evaluating the effect of behavior change communication intervention on nutritional status and academic performance among school aged children in Meskan District of South Ethiopia.Methods: This school-based cluster randomized trial (c-RCT) compares the intervention arm with control arm. The intervention arm receives behavior change communication (BCC) on essential nutrition actions. The control arm receives only routine health and nutrition services. From a Meskan District, 10 clusters were selected and randomly assigned to the two study arms by randomization. The study participants will be children 10-15 years of age. Total sample size was 408 study participants. Anthropometric measurements, academic performance, nutritional knowledge, and dietary diversity will be measured at both baseline and end line. A behavior change and key poster message was providing based on essential nutrition actions for science teachers and students using class sessions and school visits. A binary logistic regression analysis will be used to identify independent predictors of nutritional status and academic performance of schoolchildren after controlling for confounding variables. The effect of BCC on micronutrient will be determined using generalized estimating equations (GEE) and or linear mixed effects models.Results: A total of 378 primary schoolchildren (10-15 years of age) were involved in the study giving a response rate of 93%. The mean age of the students was 12.8 years (SD ± 1.3 years). The prevalence of stunting and underweight was 16.9% and 37.3% respectively. The mean score of overall grades was 64.52 ± 8.45.Discussion: The findings of this study will provide sufficient evidence to develop policies and programs aimed to improve dietary diversity in children as well as nutritional knowledge (10-15 years) and to prevent micronutrient deficiencies and poor academic performance in school settings. It will also provide recommendations for strengthening the school nutrition component of behavior change communication in child health and nutrition programs.Trial registration: The study was retrospectively registered on October 28, 2016 and is available online at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT02956941).","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"08 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49382596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been recognized that poor nutrient intake during pregnancy and lactation adversely affects the health of both the pregnant mother and her baby.Less affluent societies, especially in the developing world are particularly at risk of maternal ‘mis-nutrition’ and infant malnutrition. The negative effect of infant malnutrition on a rapidly developing brain has now become a major concern of the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP). It has been said that “if children under two do not receive sufficient nutrition they will be sentenced to a lifetime of mental and physical limitations. We now have what I call the burden of knowledge and WFP is looking for ways to ensure we prioritize those under twos, the most vulnerable of all in the world” (Josette Shaaron Executive Director’s report to the Board of UN-WFP; 2010). Unbalanced, mismatched maternal dietary and nutritional choices (‘mis-nutrition’) during pregnancy and lactation can have very significant impact on fetal and neonatal brain development. Human and animal studies have shown that malnutrition has irreversible effects on brain size and function. brain birth","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70453923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, non-adherence is an issue for not reducing the problem in these populations.Objective: To determine non-adherence to Iron/Folate Supplementation and associated factors among pregnant women who attending antenatal care visit in selected public health institutions at Hosanna Town, Southern Ethiopia.Methodology: The study was conducted at public health facilities found in Hossana town, southern part of Ethiopia. An institutional based cross-sectional study design was performed. Randomly selected three hundred and sixty five women were included in the study. Collected data were edited, coded and entered to Epi info version 3.1 and exported to` SPSS version 20. The association of every independent variable with the response variable was evaluated using bivariate analysis. Statistically significant variables were considered in the multivariate model using SPSS version 20.Results: Among women participated in the study, 30.41% were non adherent to iron/folate supplementation. Compared to women aged 15-24 years, women above 35 years of age 4.16 (95% CI: 1.24, 3.95) had higher non adherence. Women who didn’t get nutrition counseling 3.19 (95% CI: 1.16, 3.74) and women lacking knowledge of anemia 16 (95% CI: 4.34, 6.92) were associated with a higher likely hood of non-adherence.Conclusions and recommendations: Considerable proportion of pregnant women was non-adhered. Age, income, knowledge about hemoglobin status, knowledge about anemia and nutritional counseling were significant predictors for non-adherence. Therefore, promoting the benefits of iron/folic supplementation, increasing the awareness of women about anemia and nutrition counseling through health education activities is vital for decreasing non adherence.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":" ","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49213580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this was to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and vitamin D deficiency and to determine the association between vitamin D status and metabolic syndrome in an Asian Indian population from Hyderabad, India.Methods: 299 normal individuals were randomly selected, for this cross sectional study, from individuals who voluntarily participated in a health camp. Anthropometric measures were taken along with 25-hydroxyvitamin D, fasting blood glucose, complete lipid profiles were also assessed. Socio-demographic data such as sex, age, smoking status, physical activity and diet were also collected. Data was analyzed using t-tests and chi-square test of association.Results: 81.6% had 25 (OH) D deficiencies, 13.4% had insufficiency and 44% had metabolic syndrome. Females had lower levels of mean 25 (OH)D 18.33 ± 12.9 nmol/l as compared to males. 34.4% had 25 (OH)D deficiency as well as metabolic syndrome. A significant (p=0.02) association was observed between serum 25(OH)D and metabolic syndrome. Participants with 25(OH)D insufficiency had 4.6 (p-value=0.023) times higher odds of metabolic syndrome versus those with 25(OH)D >100 nmol/l, whereas those with deficiency had approximately 2 times higher odds.Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency has become a pervasive problem with implications for cardiovascular health across age and gender groups. Our research indicates that women are at a higher risk of having metabolic syndrome than men if they have deficiency or insufficiency of vitamin D. Timely translational research needs to develop the appropriate interventions to stem this.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2161-0509.1000229","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48698535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty-nine outpatients receiving stable maintenance hemodialysis in Japan were analyzed. Each patient was provided meals with known nutrient contents for two days and instructed to record the food intake at each meal using a standard food record form (method A) or a semi-quantitative food record form (method B). Each patient underwent two assessments by the two methods in a crossover manner. The concordance proportions between estimated dietary food intake by method A or method B and the actual dietary intake were compared for energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, potassium, phosphorus, and salt. Estimated energy intake using method B (96.2%) was significantly closer (p<0.05) to actual energy intake, compared to method A (90.9%). However, estimated fat intake using method A (96.9%) was significantly closer (p<0.01) to actual fat intake compared to method B (113.4%). A significant difference (p<0.05) was observed between actual and estimated energy intake by method A (88.2%) in females. A significant difference (p<0.001) was observed between actual and estimated total energy intake (86.7%) or carbohydrate intake (85.0%) for method A in subjects aged ≥ 65 years. Method B has improved accuracy compared to method A in estimating energy intake, but still underestimates energy intake. Method B also underestimates carbohydrate intake and overestimates fat intake. Further study is required to improve the accuracy of dietary assessment method.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2161-0509.1000228","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49304391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is considered significant mainly for ICU patients; though no clear criteria for including glutamine in treatment have been defined. It is known that glutamine should be administered as a complement to nutritional treatment, and not independently. The purpose of the paper was to identify practical criteria for determining the clinical benefits of glutamine supplementation. The study was performed in the years 2007-2015 at the 1st Department of General and Transplantation Surgery and Nutritional Therapy of the Lublin Medical University in Lublin, Poland. It included patients scheduled for surgery due to a gastrointestinal cancer. The final study group included 105 patients, 48 female and 57 male. We found that low blood concentration of glutamine was correlated with a higher incidence of postoperative complications. ROC analysis allowed for identification of glutamine concentration below which there is a very high risk of complications. The threshold glutamine value identified was 205.15 nmol/ml. Low total lymphocyte count and serum albumin concentration can help identify patients in whom glutamine supplementation can decrease postoperative complication incidence, especially in the case of malnourished patients. Glutamine supplementation before a scheduled surgical procedure may benefit patients with a preoperative glutamine concentration below 205.15 nmol/ml. Glutamine supplementation can benefit malnourished patients.","PeriodicalId":90227,"journal":{"name":"Journal of nutritional disorders & therapy","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2161-0509.1000227","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43865625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
