Regulatory and advisory bodies such as the American Association of Diabetics Educators and the Diabetes Education Study Group (Europe) monitor the quality of education by recommending minimal/optimal guidelines which centers try to follow. Many countries, however, lag behind. While most diabetologists in underserved countries have accepted the need for focused diabetic counselors, they are hampered by the lack of qualified staff. This means that anyone who is ‘willing’ or ‘available’, whether a clinical nurse or a dietician, is taken as a diabetes care team member. He or she is taught a few rudimentary facts of diabetes, and given the label of educator.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76971861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Late presentation of patients at advanced stages of disease forms the hallmark of breast cancer in Nigerian women. The peak age of breast cancer presentation among Nigerian women is about 10-15years earlier than what is observed in Caucasian women, where it occurs between the ages of 35-45 years. This study assessed breast cancer knowledge and behavior in terms of screening practices among introductory clinical medical students in Delta State. Nigeria. Materials and Method. The data consisted of selected and constructed response items on a questionnaire which was administered to all introductory clinical (medical) students 18 years and older. Participation in this study was voluntary. The instrument consisted of multiple choice questions that measured variables such as general breast cancer knowledge, risk factors, symptoms, barriers, use of breast cancer screening tests, screening practices, and demographic characteristics. Results. A total of 18 questionnaires were distributed to introductory clinical (medical) students age 18 years and above at the Delta State University in Warri, Nigeria. The response rate was 100%. Age range of respondents was 21-26 years. The overall knowledge of breast cancer was 89.1% while knowledge of the risk factors for breast cancer development was 62.7%. Knowledge of breast cancer symptoms was 67.8%. There were no barriers to breast screening exercises. All the participants admitted performing breast self examination regularly but 22.2% did not know how often breast examination should be done. Three participants (16.7%) have never been told about breast cancer screening by a nurse or physician previously and 16 students (88.9%) have never had a clinical breast examination. Conclusion. While the overall knowledge of breast-cancer, risk factors and performance of breast self examination were good, further studies on a wider scale in Nigeria are needed to elucidate reasons why the elite women do not present themselves for clinical breast examination and why the physicians do not practice routine clinical breast examination.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"111 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82503527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 400 respondents were selected using multistage sampling technique, but only 395 of completed questionnaires were finally found usable. The subjects were in the ratio of 50.8% males to 49.2% females and their ages ranged between <13 and 24 years. Although, almost all of them (98.4%) ever heard of HIV/AIDS before and majority (88.9%) have heard of condom, sex-related risky behaviours were still prevalent among them. This includes multiple sex partners in the last one year (10.5%), multiple life-time sex partners (14.1%), low rate of condom use in last sex (22.7%), sex in exchange for money or favour (9.8%), early sexual debut at less than 13 (18.8%), sex with female sex workers (12.2%) and diagnosed with STDs (6.8%). This scenario calls for urgent intervention measures such as HIV/AIDS school education programmes in the state and region.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86696749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Prospective, longitudinal design. Assessments at baseline and 6, 12, and 18 months of Profile of Mood States, Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire, and weight. RESULTS: Total mood disturbance decreased from baseline to 6 months, with no change thereafter. Weight decreased from baseline to 6 to 12 months, and increased from 12 to 18 months. Physical activity increased from baseline to 6 months, and 12 to 18 months. Increased physical activity predicted greater vigor and less fatigue over time. Females high in distress at 6 months lost less weight than females low in distress and at 18 months gained more weight than those low in distress. There were no such associations among males. The main weaknesses in the Delphi process were found to be -the lack of experts in infectious diseases amongst the Delphi team, the 9-point Likert scale without clear verbal labels, lack of representatives from countries with SARS experience, discontinuity in the Delphi panel composition from the 1st to the 2nd round to the face -to-face meeting and delays in data gathering due to collaboration with another project. It can be concluded that from the results that Delphi technique when rigorously administered, analyzed and reported is a valuable method to develop international health policy recommendations for emerging infectious diseases and aid the international policy development process creatively collecting expert opinions and suggestions.","PeriodicalId":89628,"journal":{"name":"The Internet journal of mental health","volume":"65 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73389126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
