The impact of the project extended across ecological and social dimensions of Korean society at large, while also significantly affecting local communities in NJP. Regional or national stakeholders participated in the resultant social conflicts, and sought their particular political, economic and ecological interests within the context of a dynamic social and political context. This paper examines the reason why the project commenced and why it persists even in the face of such a socially combative environment, connecting social forces with development orientation and environmentalism. And then this paper discusses the social and ecological implications for more ecological and democratic development in Korea.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. This paper tests the two concepts for their effectiveness by analyzing historical examples for both. As criteria for effectiveness were set: 1. the criterion of comparative living conditions, 2. the criterion of satisfaction with the outcomes, 3. the criterion of integration and the lack of prejudices and discrimination. The comparison was considered admissible, if the comparison produced typical differences for the two methods. All historical examples of unification by absorption show deep splits in the societies even more than hundred years and many generations after reunification or unification. Some of the examples, however, show good scores on the creation of comparable living conditions. All examples of incremental unifications have succeeded much better in creating integrated societies with satisfaction and mutual respect and acceptance yet with much variance in living conditions.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. However, consumption and production activities are both essential fields of cultural participation. Through the use of comprehensive data about cultural consumption and production activities, this study attempts to explore patterns of cultural participation in Korea. It also investigates the determinants of these different patterns. Four major findings resulted from the study. First, four different types of cultural participation were derived: omnivorous prosumers, omnivorous consumers, omnivorous producers, and univores. Second, members of the new middle class, with higher educational levels and higher household incomes, are more likely to be omnivorous consumers or omnivorous prosumers. Third, demographic factors such as gender and age also have effects on the patterns of cultural participation in Korea. Lastly, it was revealed that the larger an individual’s social network, the greater the probability of being a cultural omnivore of any type. This study contributes to the expansion of the boundaries of prior discussions on cultural omnivores.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. I used 1) our monthly public opinion survey results, and 2) newspaper coverage data on the March 11, 2013 disaster issue as the representative for all media coverage. I discussed these relationships chronologically. The March 11th earthquake in 2011 occurred in the midst of economically difficult conditions in Japanese society after the 2008 financial shock. After the disaster, the response rate of “the disaster” as well as “economy” and “finance” had been the three highest categories among all responses. I must also refer to the differences between nationally circulated newspapers and local ones. Nationally circulated newspapers have shifted their attention to other issues quicker than local newspapers. Nationally circulated newspapers wrote many articles when the disaster had occurred, but the number of articles soon declined.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. However, it has a second, but more important meaning that is concerned with two deficits which the cosmopolitan publicness in the age of global risks should cope with; the \"democratic deficit\" and what we would like to call 'ecological deficits'. The critical cosmopolitan project in the age of global risks needs to be reflective in dual senses to cope with both two deficits. The second meaning of 'another cosmopolitanism' lies in this critical cosmopolitan project. So our method of critical reconstruction is for putting together these two meanings to create a critical Confucian cosmopolitanism in a hermeneutic circle. On the one hand, we will reconstruct the Confucian cosmopolitanism from the viewpoint of the critical cosmopolitanism, and one the other hand we will explore the potentials of Confucian cosmopolitanism for providing the model of reflective publicness in its dual senses which is necessary for critical cosmopolitanism. We would like to proceed in the following way. First, we will present basic features of the cosmopolitanism implied in Tianxiaweigong and explain the reason why the reflective publicness in its dual senses is necessary for critical cosmopolitanism. Second, the grammar of Confucian cosmopolitan publicness contained in Neo-Confucian conception of Tianxiaweigong will be reconstructed. Third, we will discuss the three paths of reconstructing the Heavenly Principle in the name of the dialectic of Confucian enlightenment, and, based on this reconstruction, will present the profile of the ecodemocratic publicness as the critically reconstructed Neo-Confucian cosmopolitan order. Lastly, we will explain its reflective structure in its dual sense and explore its implication for our age of global risks. Keywords: Tianxiaweigong (...), Critical Confucian Cosmopolitanism, Grammar of the Neo-Confucian Cosmopolitan Publicness, Dialectic of Confucian Enlightenment, Ecological Deficit, Reflective Publicness in Its Dual Senses.(ProQuest: ... denotes non-US-ASCII text omitted.)I. IntroductionAs a result of globalization we are now witnessing the rapid increase both of global interdependence and global risks. Global financial crisis, terrorism, paradox of the humanitarian-military intervention, and global ecological risks including climate change and nuclear accidents show us clearly that we are living in the age of global risks (Beck 2009). So the demand of a global publicness (T^'l'i) which is expected to be able to coordinate these global interactions and cope with the gl","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. How Climate Change Might Save the World 气候变化如何拯救世界

Beck","doi":"10.21588/DNS.2014.43.2.002","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21588/DNS.2014.43.2.002","url":null,"abstract":"We are faced with questions too big to fail and too big to answer. Most discussions on climate change are blocked; they are caught by catastrophism circulating in the horizon of the problem: what is climate change bad for? From a sociological point of view, because climate change is a threat to humanity, we can and should turn the question upside down and ask: what is climate change good for? The amazing thing is that if you firmly believe climate change is a fundamental threat to all of humanity, then that belief might bring a transformative, cosmopolitan turn in our contemporary life and the world might be changed for the better. This is what I call emancipatory catastrophism'. The question then is: how might climate change save the world?First thesis: Climate change is the embodiment of the mistakes of a whole epoch of industrial capitalism, and climate risks pursue their acknowledgement and correction with all the violence of the possibility of annihilation.Global risks are a kind of collective return of the repressed, wherein the self-assurance of the industrial capitalism, organized in form of nation-state politics, is confronted with the source of its own errors as an objectified threat to its own existence. Thus the global risk of climate change is a kind of compulsive, collective memory of the fact that past decisions and mistakes are contained in what we find ourselves exposed to; and that even the highest degree of institutional reification is nothing but a reification that can be revoked - a borrowed mode of action which can, and must, be changed if it leads to self-jeopardization.Put differently, the sociological significance of climate change lies in the momentum it generates in the re-emergence of the historicity of society and politics on a global scale, thereby allowing us to imagine new beginnings. Therefore, climate change risk can, as we shall see, be made into cosmopolitan communities of shared risks or even into an antidote to war; it induces the necessity to overcome neo-liberalism and to perceive and to practice new forms of transnational responsibility. It empowers the poor countries of the world and gives them a public voice; it puts the problem of cosmopolitan justice on the agenda of international politics; it creates informal and formal cooperation patterns between countries and governments who otherwise ignore each other or even see themselves as enemies. It makes economic and public actors accountable and makes responsible those who do not want to be accountable and responsible, and this happens even when they have the law on their side. It opens up new world markets, new innovation patterns; it changes lifestyles and consumption patterns. Last but not least, it induces new understandings of and caring for nature. All of this happens under the surface of the mantra of disappointments and disillusionments at the Wanderzirkus (traveling circus) of one climate conference after the other. From this perspective, climate ","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. But how did Hallyu suddenly emerge in this part of the international system? What factors led to its development? The results of our field research findings in Peru and Brazil brings the argument away from the cultural proximity for both states with high levels of Asian migration (i.e. Japanese and Chinese) and provides an interesting insight into discussions on socioeconomic grounds that may have influenced individuals’ interests towards Hallyu.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. New social risks are the risks that people face in their life course due to the economic and social changes related to post-industrialization. By comparing a typology of welfare states based on trajectories of policy change in last three decades with Esping-Andersen’s threefold typologies of welfare states, we can determine whether welfare states maintain their existing welfare systems or change them. The results of sequence analysis on social expenditures and total tax revenue show that welfare regimes undergo a substantial change. In particular, conservative welfare regime countries show various trajectories when reacting to new social risks. This finding empirically supports studies that assert the transformation of the welfare state.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo. News articles stress the ecological effects of climate change and the need to mitigate and to reduce emissions through government policies. Compared to other countries, however, one point stands out?the Korean press frames mitigation as an economic opportunity, not a threat. Moreover, businesses cited in the news strongly support this idea. However, citing government and business sectors, the conservative and financial newspapers tend to define this opportunity as selling Korean nuclear power technology and green technology abroad. These papers rarely represent voices that advocate structural change in Korean society to reduce its emissions. This particular stance on mitigation as an economic opportunity results from the vulnerability of the Korean export economy to international pressures, coupled with government and business attempt to find a viable export option under the mitigation rationale.","PeriodicalId":84572,"journal":{"name":"Development and society (Soul Taehakkyo.
