Test reflectance measurements were also performed at room temperature. Our aim was both to study YBCO phonons by transmission measurements and to check if FIR spectra of imperfect YBCO films can be described in the framework of the BCS theory. In order to describe our measurements, we provide exact expressions for both transmittance and reflectance, averaged with respect to the interference fringes of the substrate. By modelling the complex dielectric constant of the film, we then study the YBCO phonons which are evident in the measured spectra. The comparison between spectra of normal and superconducting phases shows that the superconducting transition affects our spectra only at very low frequencies. These microscopic effects are probed at the macroscopic level by using an a.c. magnetic field to impose polarization modulation on near millimetre wave radiation propagating through such fluids. The results were compared to those of Hg<sub>1−<em>x</em></sub>Cd<sub><em>x</em></sub>Te for the same range of energy gap. The calculations are based on solving the Boltzmann equation using a variational principle technique. The scattering processes that are included in the calculations are the scattering of the electrons with ionized impurities, holes, alloy disorder, acoustic phonons and longitudinal optical phonons. Kneubühl","doi":"10.1016/0020-0891(93)90013-W","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0020-0891(93)90013-W","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>We report on new effects in relation to optical pumping of far-infrared (FIR) superradiance and Raman emissions in CH<sub>3</sub>F, CH<sub>3</sub>CN, D<sub>2</sub>O, NH<sub>3</sub> by rapidly truncated 10 μm CO<sub>2</sub> laser pulses and optical-free-induction decay (OFID) 30 ps-10μm-CO<sub>2</sub> laser pulses. Thus, we have found a drastic reduction of the FIR-pulse duration which is closely related to the fast truncation of about 10 ps of the plasma shutter used in our OFID 10 μm-CO<sub>2</sub> laser system. The forward emissions exhibit the on-set of swept-gain superradiance and the appearance of Raman emission with increasing pressure in the FIR cell. This implies line competition between the superradiant and Raman emissions and thus results in different emission regimes which we have investigated systematically. The backward emissions are superradiant over the whole range of our investigations and show high quality with respect to stability and reproducibility which is important for applications.</p><p>Furthermore, we have found that the CO<sub>2</sub>-pump radiation and the generated FIR Raman emission interact mutually which results in anticorrelated fluctuations of the two fields. We have been able to interpret this effect as a result of periodic back-and-forth fluctuations of the Λ-like three-level molecular systems.</p><p>Finally, we have observed the development of OFID of the truncated CO<sub>2</sub>-pump pulses in the FIR-laser gases. This effect has been thoroughly investigated and as a result we have generated for the first time ps-10 μm-CO<sub>2</sub>-OFID pulses with FIR-laser gases as spectral filters instead of the usual hot CO<sub>2</sub> gas. Schottky barriers were also made in the same epilayers to compare the figures of merit. The instrument utilizes a rotating diffraction grating wheel for the dual purpose of spatially scanning the plasma cross section and providing a Doppler frequency offset for heterodyne detection purposes. Only two detectors are required to obtain accurate interferometric and polarimetric information for 15 discrete spatial chords. A novel approach to the optical processing of the initially linearly polarized probe beam allows the Faraday rotation of the vibrational ellipse to be unambiguously encoded as a phase modulation on the intermediate frequency carrier signals extracted from the two detectors.
