Lang","doi":"10.1016/0020-0891(93)90063-D","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0020-0891(93)90063-D","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>In this paper we report the generation of ultrashort far-infrared laser pulses with durations less than 100 ps, powers exceeding 200 kW and intensities of more than 1.5 MW/cm<sup>2</sup>. Far-infrared radiation was produced via stimulated resonance Raman scattering using a high-pressure CO<sub>2</sub>-laser as pump source and the heavy water isotopes D<sub>2</sub><sup>16</sup>O and D<sub>2</sub><sup>18</sup>O as far-infrared laser media. The required spectrum analyser should have an appropriately narrow bandwidth. For an atmospheric component, with isolated absorption lines, the linewidths are about 0.1 cm<sup>−1</sup> or 3 GHz under standard conditions. This leads to the need for a high resolution radiometer. Both systems and the trial site are described. The effect of atmospheric extinction and scattering is discussed. Also, the maximum range capability of the two laser rangefinders under these degraded weather conditions is assessed. The results show that the tested CO<sub>2</sub> laser rangefinder performed better than the Er:glass LRF used for the trials under all weather conditions. The array comprises one Ge:Be detector for the 45–50 μm range, five unstressed Ge:Ga detectors for wavelengths between 50 and 110 μm and four stressed Ge:Ga detectors for the long wavelength range 110–180 μm. We have calibrated the performance of the detectors, both individually and in the LWS. Optimum values of detector bias and operating temperature that maximize the sensitivity of the LWS have been established, resulting in detector NEPs ranging from 10<sup>−17</sup> W Hz<sup>−<span><math><mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext></math></span></sup> for Ge:Be to 5 × 10<sup>−19</sup> W Hz<sup>−<span><math><mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext></math></span></sup> for stressed Ge:Ga. Under the low flux conditions expected in the LWS (&lt;10<sup>−14</sup> W at the detector), doped-Ge photoconductors exhibit a number of other non-linearities and memory effects. The modified form of the three-body force shell model used in the present study consists of long-range Coulomb and three-body interactions, short-range overlap repulsion of HZ-type, and van der Waals interactions. The van der Waals interaction coefficients are determined using the Kirkwood-Muller theory based on quantum mechanical considerations. Results obtained are compared with the available experimental data. To interpret these spectra a line-by-line model has been applied, based on empirical corrections of the Lorentzian line-shape, which account roughly for the effects of line-mixing and the finite duration of collisions. At room temperature, this model provides a satisfactory agreement with experimental bandshapes, especially for the lower N<sub>2</sub> densities. At low temperature, the calculated absorption differs significantly from that observed around the band center, with a discrepancy increasing with the N<sub>2</sub> density. This difficulty is overcome by accounting for the binary—van der Waals complexes— CO…N<sub>2</sub> formation.
