In the control (glucose administrated) group, the reactivity and sensitivity of ACh contraction of the strips were attenuated by ethanol at the concentration of 200 mM and over, while those of CCK contraction was attenuated at the concentration of 200 mM over. On the other hand, in the strips from guinea pigs chronically administered 3% ethanol, both ACh- and CCK-induced contractions were inhibited by the ethanol at the concentrations of 200 mM over. It is known that CCK and ACh are main humoral factors in situ which influence gall bladder tone, and physiologically attainable concentrations of ethanol are below 100 mM. Therefore, it is concluded that the physiological concentrations of ethanol unlikely affect the motility of gall bladder in vivo.
","PeriodicalId":77015,"journal":{"name":"Arukoru kenkyu to yakubutsu izon = Japanese journal of alcohol studies & drug dependence","volume":"29 5","pages":"438-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18825201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Comparative study of the drinking patterns of heavy-drinking and other college students].","authors":"T Fukuda","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In order to contribute to measures to solve the problems caused by college students who are heavy drinkers, a comparative study of their drinking patterns, as compared to the drinking patterns of other college students, was conducted. Significant differences were observed between heavy-drinking and other students in the following 14 instances, which include drinking frequency, attitude when offered a drink, coerced drinking, like or dislike of drinking, insatiable drinking, flushing or turning pale during drinking, attitude towards a doctor's advice to quit drinking, desire to quit drinking, cost of drinking, attitude towards someone who cannot drink, experience of morning drinking during the past year, experience of loss of consciousness due to drinking, lack of success in efforts to stop drinking, and opinion of those who gulp down drinks. Almost no significant differences were revealed between heavy drinkers and other college students in regard to the desire to drink after taking an examination, drinking on borrowed money, and acting surly or abusive after drinking. Relationships between the ratio of heavy-drinking students and club activities, place of residence and place of birth were also investigated. Results which implied relationships in these cases were found, but the sample was too small to detect significant differences. Further investigation is needed by increasing the sample numbers.
","PeriodicalId":77015,"journal":{"name":"Arukoru kenkyu to yakubutsu izon = Japanese journal of alcohol studies & drug dependence","volume":"29 3","pages":"195-203"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19073639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples were in- and out-patients of Kanagawa Prefectural Center of Psychiatry, Serigaya Hospital, from January to December 1992. This study covered 26 alcoholics who had abused methamphetamine from 1 to 40 years before, with an average age at admission was 43.5 years. This compared with a 50.4 year average for 89 alcoholics who had no history of methamphetamine abuse. Hepatitis C antibodies (HCVAb) were significantly more commonly observed in ex-methamphetamine abusers than in non-abusers (73.1% vs. 18.0%). Hepatitis B antigens (HBsAg) were no more common among abusers than non-abusers (0% vs. 2.2%). Blood transfusion history tended to be greater in ex-methamphetamine abusers than non-abusers (38.5% vs. 29.2%) but the difference did not reach conventional levels of statistical significance. Ex-abusers often wore tattoos (23.1%) whereas none of the non-abusers did, a significant difference. Based on this survey, we developed a new Quantity-Frequency Scale (QF Scale) for adolescent problem drinking. Each adolescent is scored from 0 to 6 by the QF Scale, which is composed of scores of drinking quantities and frequencies. Adolescents were assessed as normal adolescent, drinkers and problem drinkers by QF Scale scores. The normal adolescent (score 0) categorized by the QF Scale drinks none or little and obeys the Law Prohibiting Adolescents from Drinking. The drinker (score 1-3) categorized by the QF Scale drinks at least several times a year, but drinks little each time. The problem drinker (score 4-6) categorized by the QF Scale drinks several times a week and has at least two drink (1 drink is equivalent to a glass of beer) each time, once a week with at least 3 drinks, or once or twice a month with at least 6 drinks each time. The problem drinkers show a physical, psychological and social high risk for alcohol. The validity of the QF Scale was examined. The results showed that the problem drinkers had significantly frequent blackout, significantly frequent drinking when they had emotional conflicts or they were alone, and drank significantly more hard liquor than the drinkers and normal adolescents. Among the high school students surveyed, 39.5% were normal adolescents, 43.2% were drinkers and 17.4% were problem drinkers. In conclusion, the QF Scale is a useful instrument for assessment of adolescent problem drinking.
","PeriodicalId":77015,"journal":{"name":"Arukoru kenkyu to yakubutsu izon = Japanese journal of alcohol studies & drug dependence","volume":"29 3","pages":"168-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19073635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ALAD has two common alleles and thus consists of three distinct isozymes, designated 1-1, 1-2, and 2-2. It has been shown recently that ALAD1 allele is associated with alcoholic liver injury. This association was ascribed to possible differences among isozymes in sensitivity to oxidized glutathione (GSSG), and this sensitivity is increased in erythrocytes of alcoholic patients. In the present study we measured erythrocyte ALAD activity from subjects with different ALAD genotype and found ALAD-1 is most sensitive to GSSG. We then investigated allele frequencies of ALAD in alcoholics (n = 126) and healthy controls (n = 115). For the control group, the frequencies were 0.94 (ALAD1) and 0.06 (ALAD2) and for the overall alcoholic group, 0.91 (ALAD1) and 0.09 (ALAD2). There were no significant differences in allele frequencies at the ALAD locus between the two groups. Subtyping the alcoholics according to the presence or absence of delirium tremens, hallucinosis, withdrawal seizure or liver cirrhosis failed to show statistically significant differences in the allele frequencies. We conclude that our data do not support the evidence of an allelic association between the ALAD1 and alcoholism.
","PeriodicalId":77015,"journal":{"name":"Arukoru kenkyu to yakubutsu izon = Japanese journal of alcohol studies & drug dependence","volume":"29 3","pages":"179-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19073636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The duration of problem drinking does not seem to be in a linear relation to the cognitive functions of alcoholics. This study tested the hypothesis according to which the duration of problem drinking is connected with cognitive functioning only at the beginning of abstinence, when withdrawal symptoms are present and when the spontaneous recovery of cognitive functions has hardly started. Once the withdrawal symptoms have gone, between-subjects variation in spontaneous recovery probably hides the effect of the duration of problem drinking. A total of 179 Finnish male alcoholics took part in the study. Randomly assigned to three groups, the subjects were tested during the first, second or fourth week of abstinence. [A study on preventive measures for redrinking in alcoholics]. 酗酒者再饮酒预防措施的研究

{"title":"[A study on preventive measures for redrinking in alcoholics].","authors":"M Murayama, S Higuchi, M Hayashida","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

We conducted a questionnaire survey on reasons or situations that lead alcoholics to start drinking alcohol, and measures to overcome the craving for alcohol. The subjects were 187 alcoholics (mean age; 53.9 +/- 9.9) who were outpatients of Kurihama National Hospital or the members of \"Danshu-kai\" (Japan Sobriety Association). Their mean abstinent period at the time of this survey was 43.6 months. To examine the relationship between various factors such as demographic backgrounds, reasons to start drinking, and measures to overcome craving and the length of abstinent periods, the subjects were divided into two groups in terms of abstinent periods; long-term group (24 months or more of abstinence, 88 cases) and short-term group (less than 24 months of abstinence, 99 cases). As reasons for taking the last drink, \"psychological problems\" showed the highest percentage (20.3%), followed by starting drink without any reason (17.7%). Measures used most frequently to overcome craving were \"thinking about their own lives\" (34.8%), \"contacting self-help groups\" (22.5%), and \"thinking about self-help groups\" (20.9%). Interestingly, non-alcoholic beverages were often used to overcome craving; coffee or tea and non-alcoholic soda were most frequently used in the long-term group, and coffee or tea and milk in the short-term group. The results of this study suggest that there is no particular situation or reason of significance that specifically induces the craving for alcohol in alcoholics. They took various measures to overcome craving. From the viewpoint of managing craving, this study reconfirmed the significant importance of self-help groups for sustaining long-term abstinence.
","PeriodicalId":77015,"journal":{"name":"Arukoru kenkyu to yakubutsu izon = Japanese journal of alcohol studies & drug dependence","volume":"29 2","pages":"139-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19184150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
