In the absence of a vaccine, controlling the spread of SARS-CoV-2 depends on social distancing measures, such as school closures and stay-at-home orders. Infectious disease epidemiologists create models to test the effects of these different interventions and to predict their impact on different populations. One key input to these models is data on social contact and mixing patterns. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of this type of data for the US. The Minnesota Department of Health and University of Minnesota launched the Minnesota Social Contact Study (MN SCS) in order to capture social contact and mixing pattern data for MN as different social distancing measures are enacted. This report describes the MN SCS survey and survey methodology. We highlight key differences between the MN SCS and the most widely cited and used social contact survey based on data from eight European countries in 2006. We conclude by highlighting changes others may consider when adopting the survey for use in other populations. A copy of the survey instrument is included in the appendix.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"13669"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41706219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These studies suggest that characteristics such as gender, race/ethnicity, and age may be predictive of a sample respondent’s decision to participate in surveys. At least one other study suggests that what the interviewer is wearing can also impact how respondents behave. Given the controversy of wearing masks in the time of COVID-19, we explore the notion of face coverings worn by enumerators and whether this may influence a household’s decision to participate in the 2020 U.S. Census nonresponse follow-up operation.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"14156"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49458370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent work on political and social attitudes has shown that gender has far-reaching consequences for attitudes that are not neatly summed up by measures of sex, but measures of gender identity have generally been used either in forms that are too lengthy for most survey research or have only been used in online modalities. Longer sets of gender identity items may be theoretically desirable, but a gender identity item embedded in a live-caller random digit dialing survey in New Jersey shows that just one gender identity item can account for a great deal of within-sex variance in political and social attitudes without leading to an overly high rate of refusals.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"13697"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44977803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While web surveys have grown more popular due to the high rate of Internet penetration for younger populations and the low cost of administration, this mode typically results in even lower response rates than other modes. Research suggests that features of the email invitation can enhance survey salience and response rates. In this study, we conduct a split-ballot randomized web survey to determine the effect of tone in the email invitation on nonresponse for an undergraduate student population. We find that an informal tone in the survey invitation results in a significantly lower response rate for males, but not for females.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49444816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A mail survey study randomized across three incentive conditions ($2 pre-paid, $10 post-paid, and $20 post-paid), found that households in the $2 pre-paid condition were more likely to respond than the $10 post-paid condition (48.5% vs. 33.5%, β = -0.536, SE = 0.154, p < .001) and the $20 post-paid condition (48.5% vs. 42.4%, β = -0.305, SE = 0.10, p = 0.11). The $2 pre-paid condition was also more cost-effective than the $10 and $20 post-paid conditions (cost-per-complete of $15.35 vs. $26.67 and $34.40, respectively). The results of this study show that a small pre-paid incentive is generally most effective for maximizing both response rates and costs. The data from the study is also used to construct a model to forecast cost-efficiency for variable eligibility conditions, through a factor-adjusted response rate.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"12495"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45172635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In household surveys, cognitive interviewing is typically conducted by experienced survey methodologists in laboratory settings. Agencies with laboratories can conduct multiple cognitive interviews in a day using small staffs of experienced methodologists, thus reducing costs and expediting the research process. However, when populations are hard to reach, methodologists must travel to participants. In these situations, cognitive interviewing can be a very time- consuming and expensive method. In surveys of establishments, cognitive interviewing is almost always conducted outside of a laboratory setting. Researchers must travel to multiple establishment sites that are not always geographically close to one another. At the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), cognitive interviewing has been limited due to the rural nature and geographic distribution of our survey universe, namely, farm and ranch operators. In 2014, NASS expanded its cognitive interviewing program by training production staff in state and regional offices to conduct cognitive interviews, under the direction of survey methodologists at NASS’s headquarters office. This paper discusses how the expanded cognitive interview training program was planned and developed; describes experiences and lessons learned; and outlines NASS’s plan to continue using its nontraditional cognitive interviewing program.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"11810"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46776120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the lab experiment reported here, 61 older adults (age 59+) were randomly assigned to complete a survey on an iPhone with response options displayed either with conventional controls (radio buttons and checkboxes) or one of three contemporary formats: larger controls, larger controls enclosed in wide buttons, and wide buttons without any controls. The three optimization approaches were equally effective at improving respondents’ tapping accuracy but were not equally rated in post-survey evaluations. Respondents tended to prefer the larger HTML-style controls over wide buttons. The results suggest that one simple way for researchers to effectively optimize their questionnaires for smartphones is to increase the size of conventional input elements without changing their basic shape or design.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"11763"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44038124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Probabilistic measures of candidate success have become increasingly common in some areas of election prognosis, moving away from traditional procedures based on confidence intervals. Here we show that, with the same information used to construct a confidence interval, a more precise projection of election results can be calculated demonstrating the probability of a certain candidate winning the election. The procedure can take into account respondent nonresponse of “do not know/refuse to answer” (dk/ref). The ambiguities inherent in confidence intervals and their margins of error are avoided by calculating the probability that one candidate receives more votes. Importantly, throughout the article, we show that our procedure requires a smaller sample size and produces more predictive accuracy.","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"13 1","pages":"11736"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46574183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Little research includes comparisons by sample frame as well as by mode. This research examines differences in efficiency using two types of sample frames (address-based samples [ABS] or random digit dialing [RDD] samples) and multiple modes (web-based surveys, mailed questionnaire, and telephone interview) among adult respondents. Matching telephone numbers to addresses was conducted on both samples. A test of the effectiveness of making modifications to drop point locations in the ABS was also undertaken. A higher proportion of addresses were matched to telephone numbers in an ABS but with less accuracy than matching telephone numbers to addresses in an RDD sample. Costs per competed interview were lower using the RDD than when using the ABS. Efforts to specify apartment numbers in drop point locations in the ABS were not found to be cost effective. Overall, for both demographic and substantive question outcomes, survey frame has less of an impact than survey mode on measures of response rate and cost.</p>","PeriodicalId":74893,"journal":{"name":"Survey practice","volume":"12 1","pages":"1-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8040487/pdf/nihms-1680310.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"25589236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
