In a postal invitation letter, we provided the following three options to enter our web survey: using the URL address, emailing the researcher to get a link to the web survey, and texting one’s email address to the researcher to get a link to the web survey. The results of the multinomial logistic regression model show that the odds of selecting the option *“Response link by email”* is 4.1 times higher for those who have a primary education than for those who have an upper secondary education. In addition, an increase of one year in the respondent’s age increased the odds of selecting the *“Response link by email”* option by approximately 5%. In conclusion, older and less educated people tend to select less cognitively burdening entry options.

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic affected daily life throughout the entire U.S., but to differing degrees depending upon the particular neighborhood or community. In this article, we use U.S. Centers for Disease Control county-level COVID-19 infection data coupled with U.S. 2020 Decennial Census response rate data to explore whether this societal level pandemic influenced participation in the census. We found that even when controlling for covariates predictive of COVID-19 infection rates (e.g., percent minority population, age 65+), infection rates were found to be significantly (negatively) associated with self-response.

Cognitive testing of the survey instrument (n=5) suggested that physicians did not always feel that they possessed adequate MC knowledge in all domains, so DKs were added to six of 27 survey items. (Three items were batteries of questions while three were single questions.) We constructed bar graphs for the sum of DK responses in each battery and for the sum of all DK responses in the survey. Mann-Whitney tests compared medians for all DK responses within Yes/No responses to the sufficient knowledge question. \u0000\u0000**Principal Findings:** Statistically significant associations between DK responses and the sufficient knowledge question indicate that DK answers improved data quality by providing all respondents with an answer category that they feel fits their “true” answer. Associations between DK answers and other background variables such as respondents’ age, sex, and race are also discussed. The logistic regressions found that possessing sufficient knowledge was the only variable significant across six of the nine regressions, and the direction was consistent with the bivariate findings. \u0000\u0000**Conclusion:** In this study, DKs appear to be valid responses, improving data quality by providing some respondents with an answer category that best fits their “true” answer. Future surveys aiming to learn about physicians’ views regarding emerging treatments might consider including the DK response option in some items.

An emerging concept in survey methodology has been web-push survey delivery. With this delivery method, contact is made by mail to request a response by web. This study explored the feasibility of a web-push survey on a national sample of physicians.

Methods: A total of 1,000 physicians across six specialties were randomly assigned to a mail-only or web-push survey delivery. Each mode consisted of four contacts including an initial mailing, reminder postcard, and two additional follow-ups. Response rates were calculated using the American Association for Public Opinion Research's response rate 3 calculation. Data collection occurred between Febuary and April 2018; data were analyzed March 2019.

Results: Overall reponse rates for the mail-only versus web-push survey delivery were comparable (51.2% vs. 52.8%). Higher response rates across all demographics were seen in the web-push delivery, with the exception of pulmonary/critical care and physicians over the age of 65. The web-push survey yielded a greater response after the first mailing, requiring fewer follow-up contacts resulting in a more cost-effective delivery.

Conclusions: A web-push mail survey is effective in achieving a comparable response rate to traditional mail-only delivery for physicians. The web-push survey was more efficient in terms of cost and in receiving responses in a more timely manner. Future research should explore the efficiency of a web-push survey delivery across various health care provider populations.

Although not intended for recruiting participants, Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) service is a crowdsourcing platform that is being utilized for a lower cost. This study compares data collected from MTurk (N = 760) and a professional panel (N = 1,110) to assess aspects of data quality and respondent features. Results show that MTurk may produce better data quality based on completion rate and success in passing manipulation checks. Participants also differ in terms of educational attainment, age, and preferences of certain devices used for participation. Overall, results provide insight that researchers collecting online data should take into consideration before choosing a data collection platform.

Ten strategies were evaluated. We considered different modes of contact (FedEx vs. US Postal Service [USPS]), contingency status of incentives (pre- vs. promised incentive), amounts of incentive ($2, $10, $40, or $60), and types of incentive (cash, check, gift card, electronic). Strategies were compared in terms of response rate and cost effectiveness. Our study yielded several findings that should advance the literature: The use of FedEx clearly outperforms USPS, and the use of a moderate preincentive ($10) outperforms much larger promised incentives (up to $60) with respect to both responsiveness and cost-effectiveness. In addition, cash and check seem preferable to gift cards. Finally, we assess the potential for nonresponse bias by comparing enrollees to nonresponders across a variety of demographic characteristics for each strategy.

While researchers agree on some points, they disagree on how these options should be interpreted. For instance, a DK-O or MC may not necessarily be chosen due to a lack of a neutral/moderate opinion. This article addresses the consequences of offering versus omitting a MC or/and a DK-O. Data were collected by means of an online survey dealing with student participation (n=1,282). The results showed respondents who choose a DK-O may not have a neutral opinion. Conversely, respondents who choose a MC may not necessarily be undecided.

There are several ways to structure online surveys so as to create an optimal experience for any screen size. For example, communicating through applications (apps) such as WhatsApp and Snapchat closely resembles natural turn-by-turn conversations between individuals. Web surveys currently mimic the design of paper questionnaires mostly, leading to a survey experience that may not be optimal when completed on smartphones. In this paper, we compare a research messenger design, which mimics a messenger app type of communication, to a responsive survey design. We investigate whether response quality is similar between the two designs and whether respondents’ satisfaction with the survey is higher for either version. Our results show no differences for primacy effects, number of nonsubstantive answers, and dropout rate. The length of open-ended answers was shorter for the research messenger survey compared to the responsive design, and the overall time of completion was longer in the research messenger survey. The evaluation at the end of the survey showed no clear indication that respondents liked the research messenger survey more than the responsive design. Future research should focus on how to optimally design online mixed-device surveys in order to increase respondent satisfaction and data quality.

One such practice is to bold the question to draw attention to the start of each question and to italicize instructions to facilitate filtering of potentially unneeded information. We conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate whether the common Web survey design practice of utilizing typographic cues to indicate different categories of question text is beneficial for surveys designed for smartphones. Thirty participants completed a 5-question survey on an iPhone. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of the four designs: (1) bolded questions and italicized instructions, (2) bolded questions and plain instructions, (3) plain questions and italicized instructions, (4) plain questions and plain instructions. Survey performance was measured with survey completion time, difficulty rating, and preference. We found that italicizing the instructions led to shorter completion times, while bolded questions had no effect on performance. All designs were rated easy to use. The designs with bolded questions were preferred by 83% of the participants. We argue that italicized instructions assist in visual filtering by providing a cue to respondents that they may not need to read the instructions in detail but may scan or skim the instructions instead. Scanning or skimming leads to shorter completion time without detriment to accuracy because respondents can still acquire the relevant instructions.
