The aim of this study is to determine the association between maternal AA and risk of adverse birth outcomes in children. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 45,328 children born to mothers with AA and 4,703,253 controls born to mothers without AA using the Korean National Health Insurance Claims database from 2002 to 2016. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between maternal AA and the birth outcomes of their children. Infants born to mothers with AA exhibited a significantly higher risk of preterm birth (odds ratio [OR] 1.39, 95% CI 1.33-1.45; adjusted OR [aOR] 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.13), low birthweight (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.30-1.42; aOR 1.11, 95% CI 1.05-1.17), and Caesarean section birth (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.22-1.26; aOR 1.12, 95% CI 1.08-1.15) than controls. In addition, the risk of congenital malformations was also significantly higher in infants born to mothers with AA (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.15-1.22; aOR 1.10, 95% CI 1.07-1.14), especially for malformations of the urinary (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.19-1.48; aOR 1.16, 95% CI 1.04-1.29) and musculoskeletal (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.12-1.27; aOR 1.12, 95% CI 1.05-1.19) systems, than controls. This cross-sectional observational study comparatively evaluated substance-related and behavioural addictions in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis patients and analysed possible addiction patterns. From October 2023 to April 2024, 100 atopic dermatitis and 104 psoriasis patients at a German university hospital completed an anonymous questionnaire, including sociodemographic and health-related parameters, along with validated assessment tools for common addictions (smoking, gambling, alcohol, drugs, food, and internet). More psoriasis patients had at least 1 addiction (50.0% vs 39.0%), were more frequent daily smokers (34.6% vs 15.0%) and reported gambling more frequently than atopic dermatitis patients. No differences emerged regarding gambling addiction. Psoriasis patients showed higher body mass index, with 1.9% addicted to food. Atopic dermatitis patients were more vulnerable to pathological internet use (9.0% vs 2.9%). Low happiness was a risk factor for smoking in atopic dermatitis and for gambling and drug consumption in psoriasis patients. Low disease severity was associated with pathological alcohol in-take in psoriasis. Younger age emerged as a ubiquitous risk factor for drug consumption. Distinct addiction patterns in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis patients, influenced by age, happiness, and disease severity, should guide the development of education and screening strategies.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv41350"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11711691/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142918914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An initial punch biopsy is often performed as an aid to diagnosis. A retrospective registry-based study was performed to assess histopathological concordance of punch biopsy of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and subsequent excision. Analysis of 737 punch biopsies and subsequent matched excisions was performed. In total, 493 (67%) lesions were confirmed as invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma on excision, 76% when excluding \"scar\" as a final diagnosis. Tumour diameter > 20mm was highly predictive of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (positive predictive value 91.1%). Tumours on the scalp were significantly more likely to demonstrate a final diagnosis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma than those on the arm (odds ratio 6.11, 95% confidence interval 3.1,12.0). There was moderate concordance between biopsy and excision in grade of histopathological differentiation. This study demonstrates that clinical high-risk features may be of more value in predicting a diagnosis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma than partial punch biopsy. Use of clinical and dermoscopic competencies in assessment of cutaneous tumours rather than reliance on biopsies both avoids delay in patient management in the case of high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and may also minimize unnecessary surgical excisions if there is a low clinical index of suspicion of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv40727"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11711690/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142918894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The condition can seriously both impact cosmetic appearance and obstruct nasal breathing. While its appearance is distinct, conditions such as basal cell carcinoma can mimic it, complicating diagnosis. Treatment options for rhinophyma range from medical therapies to surgical interventions, with CO2 laser resurfacing emerging as the gold standard due to its precision and minimal blood loss. This retrospective case series evaluates the long-term efficacy and patient satisfaction of CO2 laser treatment in 11 male patients treated between 2015 and 2023 at the Karolinska University Hospital. The results revealed sustained positive outcomes, with 92% of patients reporting high satisfaction and 55% experiencing improved nasal airflow post-procedure. Despite some instances of hypopigmentation and scarring, no major side effects were reported. The study supports CO2 laser treatment as a safe and effective option for moderate to major rhinophyma in Caucasian male patients with Fitzpatrick skin types I-III. The importance of considering skin type, where extra caution must be employed when treating skin types IV-VI, should be emphasized as the treatment.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv41335"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11697134/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142918896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The questionnaire was accessed by 98 participants, with 82 completing it. Most were female (95%), 18-39 years old (74%), self-diagnosed with TSW (84%), and reported current symptoms of AD and TSW. They defined TSW as dependency on TGCs and adverse reactions to their use. Erythema, desquamation, dryness, and oozing affecting the face, neck, and upper extremities were the most reported signs. Pruritus, sleep disturbance, and signs of anxiety and depression were the most reported symptoms. Recurring episodes of manifestations attributed to TSW were reported by 60%. The personal trigger factor was believed to be TGCs by 93%, and 33% also identified oral glucocorticoids. TGCs were currently used by 21%. This study aims to elucidate the association between atopic dermatitis and dementia employing systematic review, meta-analysis, and Mendelian randomization (MR). A comprehensive search was performed to select eligible cohort studies using Medline, Embase, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and the Web of Science database. In MR analysis, genomic data from the Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) (864,982 European individuals) for atopic dermatitis cases and dementia cases were obtained from the MRBase. Statistical analyses included the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, sensitivity tests, and MR-PRESSO for outliers. The adjustment accounted for various factors, including sex, age, smoking status, and other medical comorbidities, along with several additional variables. In the systematic review and meta-analysis, 5 longitudinal cohort studies (12,576,235 participants) indicated a significant association between atopic dermatitis and all-cause dementia (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.07-1.23). Subgroup analyses revealed an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.18 (95% CI: 1.08-1.27) for Alzheimer's disease in patients with atopic dermatitis, and an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.37 (95% CI: 1.21-1.55) for all-cause dementia in patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. However, MR analysis showed no significant causal link between atopic dermatitis and dementia, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, or cognitive performance. While the meta-analysis revealed a significant association, MR analysis did not substantiate a significant causal link. A single-centre combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study was conducted with 59 patients to assess cell-free DNA levels in herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia. Cell-free DNA was extracted from blood samples of patients with herpes zoster or post-herpetic neuralgia and compared with healthy controls. The findings demonstrated elevated cell-free DNA levels in patients with herpes zoster, which remained elevated for 3 months or longer following treat-ment. These results suggest the presence of a subacute inflammatory state after herpes zoster infection. Furthermore, patients who developed post-herpetic neuralgia did not show elevated cell-free DNA levels, while those who did not develop post-herpetic neuralgia exhibited increased levels. This indicates that post-herpetic neuralgia is likely a localized response to prior nerve damage rather than a systemic inflammatory process with acute tissue damage.</p>","PeriodicalId":6944,"journal":{"name":"Acta dermato-venereologica","volume":"105 ","pages":"adv42137"},"PeriodicalIF":3.5,"publicationDate":"2025-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11697138/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142918891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
