Part of the reason for this gap in the historical record is the absence of materials in conventional archives and newspapers. Discussions of Muslims in Guyana also often centre on the stories of South Asian indentured migrants who formed the majority of the Muslim Guyanese population in the twentieth century. Yet, the practice of Islam developed amongst Black-Guyanese Muslims in relation to the Pan-Africanist movements of the 1940s that aligned anti-imperialism and Black identity with adoptions of Islam, and is therefore a key milestone in the Black-Muslim-Guyanese story. The writings of Malik Shabazz, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood of Guyana, are particularly helpful in understanding the development of Islam amongst Black Guyanese because they reveal an anti-imperial religious pedagogy imbedded in a process of asserting a Black Muslim identity. While this research note is by no means exhaustive of the experiences, identities, and stories of Black Muslims in twentieth-century Guyana, it sheds some light on existing historical silences and provides a starting point for a topic that requires much more detailed study.Abstract:L’histoire des musulmans Noirs en Guyane est un sujet qui n’a pas encore fait l’objet d’une étude approfondie. Cette lacune dans le bilan historique s’explique en partie par l’absence de documents d’archives et de journaux conventionnels. En outre, les discussions portant sur les musulmans de Guyane sont généralement centrées sur l’histoire des migrants sous contrat provenant d’Asie du Sud qui formaient la majorité de la population musulmane guyanaise au XXe siècle. Pourtant, la pratique de l’islam s’est développée parmi les musulmans Noirs guyanais en relation avec les mouvements panafricanistes des années 1940 qui ont aligné l’anti-impérialisme et l’identité Noire avec l’adoption de l’islam, ce qui constitue un jalon clé dans l’histoire des Noirs musulmans guyanais. Les écrits de Malik Shabazz, le dirigeant des Frères musulmans de Guyane, sont particulièrement utiles pour comprendre le développement de l’islam chez les Noirs guyanais dans la mesure où ils dévoilent une pédagogie religieuse anti-impériale imbriquée dans un processus d’affirmation d’une identité musulmane Noire. Bien que cette note de recherche ne soit en aucun cas exhaustive en ce qui concerne les expériences, les identités et les histoires des musulmans Noirs dans la Guyane du XXe siècle, elle éclaire les silences historiques actuels et constitue un point de départ pour un sujet qui mérite une étude beaucoup plus détaillée.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"433 - 444"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44179549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of the workers settled in the nearby Whitney Pier. Among them were hundreds of African American and Caribbean men attracted by the promise of good wages and living conditions. Other people, including women and children, followed afterward. A history of Whitney Pier’s Black community demonstrates not only how industry and urbanization changed in the area at the time but also how the community negotiated those changes and in so doing established a unique subculture around the areas where the Caribbean migrants lived and socialized.Abstract:À la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle, la Dominion Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) de Sydney, en Nouvelle-Écosse, embaucha des milliers de travailleurs migrants. Plusieurs de ces travailleurs s’installèrent dans le quartier avoisinant de Whitney Pier. Parmi eux figuraient des centaines d’hommes afro-américains et caribéens séduits par la promesse de bons salaires et de bonnes conditions de vie. D’autres personnes, notamment des femmes et des enfants, vinrent les rejoindre par la suite. L’histoire de la communauté Noire de Whitney Pier démontre non seulement comment l’industrie et l’urbanisation ont évolué dans la région à cette époque, mais aussi comment la communauté a transigé avec ces changements et, ce faisant, a établi une sous-culture unique dans les environs où les migrants caribéens vivaient et socialisaient.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"301 - 324"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46666010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dans une nation en construction, les domestiques blanches, particulièrement britanniques, sont recherchées par les familles bourgeoises ainsi que par le gouvernement pour conforter les installations dans l’Ouest canadien. Malgré une forte demande, la politique d’immigration est sélective et ne favorise pas l’admission des Asiatiques et des Noirs. Face à une pénurie, des notables canadiens-français recrutent, entre 1910 et 1911, des femmes et quelques hommes dans la colonie française de la Guadeloupe. L’article montre que cette initiative privée s’inscrit dans une quête de servante générale, flexible et bon marché. Elle contraint néanmoins les agents du service de l’Immigration à intervenir, d’une part en raison de la législation en vigueur, qui de fait ne permet pas l’entrée de ces domestiques sur le sol canadien. Il s’agit d’autre part d’empêcher l’installation d’une filière qui encouragerait officiellement l’immigration de Noirs au Canada.Abstract:From Confederation to the First World War, domestic service was an important sector of employment for women and served as a gateway for immigration. In a nation under construction, Canadian middle-class families, as well as the government, sought White, particularly British, domestic servants to bolster settlement in the Canadian West. Despite the high demand, immigration policy remained selective and restricted the entry of Asian and Black migrants. Faced with a shortage, French-Canadian officials began recruiting women, and a few men, from the French colony of Guadeloupe between 1910 and 1911. This private initiative was part of a desire for flexible and cheap domestic workers. Nevertheless, it forced the Immigration Service agents to intervene, on the one hand because of the legislation in force, which did not allow these servants entry on Canadian soil. On the other hand, it prevented the installation of a network that would officially encourage the immigration of Blacks to Canada.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"271 - 300"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45849816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nature of the country itself is determined by the kind of people who are allowed to enter. An overview of Canadian immigration policy with respect to the peoples of the Caribbean provides a kind of pulse to monitor the Canada Canadians want. These policies also offer a window into mainstream Canadian attitudes toward Black people. The circumstances in which they have or have not been admitted reveal the place of African Canadians already in Canadian society. Tracing this policy therefore provides another pulse: to monitor mainstream Canadian racism. Because Caribbean immigrants have persevered, participating prominently in challenges to entry restrictions and domestic racism, they have contributed substantially to Black life in Canada and especially to the more direct inclusion of African Canadians in the broader African diaspora.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":" ","pages":"-"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48064774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ainse also owned enslaved peoples, including a Black man named Frank, who, along with Josiah Cutten, were included as part of the transactions when Ainse sold plots of her land to European American settlers. The intersecting stories of Ainse, Frank, and Cutten along a newly formed international border complicate narratives of settler colonial development. They highlight the complex relationships between settler expansion and racialized violence that help explain the region's shifting political landscape from 1780 to 1865, and, by doing so, illustrate the importance of local identities to settler colonialism.Abstract:Sally Ainse était une femme Oneida qui avait acheté une grande propriété dans la vallée de la rivière Thames à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Les histoires entrecroisées d'Ainse, de Frank et de Cutten sur une frontière internationale nouvellement formée compliquent les récits du développement colonial. Elles mettent en évidence les relations complexes entre l'expansion du peuplement et la violence racialisée qui contribuent à expliquer l'évolution du paysage politique de la région entre 1780 et 1865 et, ce faisant, illustrent l'importance des identités locales dans la cadre de la colonisation.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"55 1","pages":"1 - 25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49443218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
