Whitfield Buerkle, Darcy, and Skye Doney, eds. – Contemporary Europe in the Historical Imagination. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 2023. 418 p. This impressive volume does not bear the label of a Festschrift, though it constitutes a tribute to the scholarly importance and influence of George L. Mosse (1918–1999). That the arc of his career has inspired this book makes it something of a rarity in an era when publishers can foresee little advantage or purpose in thus honouring even the most accomplished of academicians. But what is amazing about Mosse's flair for stimulating admiration and loyalty is the queue into which Contemporary Europe in the Historical Imagination falls. This anthology isn't unprecedented. The list already includes Political Symbolism in Modern Europe: Essays in Honor of George L. Mosse, Seymour Drescher, David Sabean, and Allan Sharlin, eds. (1982); The German-Jewish Dialogue Reconsidered: A Symposium in Honor of George L. Mosse, Klaus Berghahn, ed. (1996); and What History Tells: George L. Mosse and the Culture of Modern Europe, Stanley Payne, David Sorkin, and John Tortorice, eds. (2004). A special issue of German Politics and Society (2000) was entitled \"George L. Mosse Memorial Symposium.\" Then add Emilio Gentile's Il fascino del persecutore (2007); Donatello Aramini's George L. Mosse, l'Italia e gli storici (2010); and Karel Plessini's The Perils of Normalcy: George L. Mosse and the Remaking of Cultural History (2014). They do not even exhaust the number of works that are devoted to specifying how this German-Jewish refugee shaped the scrutiny of the past. What claim can this latest volume make to attract serious readers? Ably co-edited by Darcy Buerkle (Smith College) and Skye Doney (University of Wisconsin-Madison), can Contemporary Europe in the Historical Imagination justify itself as another appreciation of Mosse's prodigious oeuvre? Three rationales can be proposed. After an early phase consecrated to the Reformation (especially in England), Mosse decided to uncover and explain the terrifying ideological forces that disrupted his own privileged life under the Weimar Republic. His studies of Nazism and Fascism pioneered in exploring the images and symbols that mass movements projected, making them so fanatically powerful. They endangered not only Jewish families like his own, but more generally the [End Page 171] democracies that were once commonly assumed to be the imperishable legacies of the fraternal and egalitarian ideals of 1789. Mosse did not explicitly repudiate the effort to understand Nazism and Fascism as stemming from economic and social conditions gone awry. But he was much more interested in the subterranean impact of myths than in the anxieties of the middle classes. Mosse thus helped inaugurate the close connection of politics to culture in producing the continental dislocations of ","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"57 117","pages":"171-173"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147900136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The idea of erecting a statue in her honour was considered, but never materialized. Auclert’s memory is thus preserved in more confidential sites of remembrance. We have identified three moments, each associated with a different place. Until 1930, the suffragist’s tomb was a place of feminist pilgrimage. The following years appear to have been a low point in the history of her memory, but it was then that activist Marie-Louise Bouglé collected Auclert’s archives for safekeeping in her library, preserving them from destruction. However, while Auclert gained a degree of recognition in the wake of the second wave of feminism, the Panthéon remains closed to her. In this respect, she is emblematic of women, and even more so of feminists, who occupy a place of secondary importance in France’s national memory.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136009110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to assert its place in this activist history, it embarked on a vast historiographical undertaking in which its Washington headquarters, the Alva Belmont House, played a leading role. Indeed, this place of memory can be analyzed as a space where historical knowledge was produced, through specific uses and practices. The mobilization of militant archives and press sources enables us to study the way in which memory is constructed, materialized and transmitted from this site, as well as the issues of power involved. This, in turn, reveals how a social movement can use, or even instrumentalize, the past for political ends.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136009112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Goldman était une anarchiste de renom qui défendait les droits des femmes, les droits des travailleurs et la liberté d’expression. Tout au long de sa vie, elle s’est entretenue avec le mouvement américain pour le droit de vote des femmes — et a été l’une des rares voix critiques à pousser le mouvement vers des positions toujours plus progressistes émanant de la gauche. La mise en contraste des formes traditionnelles de commémoration et des « contre-monuments » conçus par des artistes et érigés spontanément par ses admirateurs nous permet d’explorer les effets de ces lieux commémoratifs sur les formes que peut prendre la mémoire publique et sur les enjeux liés à ces choix formels.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136009111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cependant, entre la fin du siècle et les années 1970, une période qui a vu la montée simultanée de l’histoire des femmes et du féminisme d’État, les féministes ont fait preuve d’ambivalence quant à la commémoration des campagnes de suffrage, plus particulièrement au niveau national. Depuis la fin des années 1980, la bannière a connu une transformation, passant d’un artefact dont peu d’Australiens connaissaient l’existence, et encore moins qu’ils avaient oublié, au symbole le plus familier des mouvements de suffrage du pays. Provoqué par les agents de la mémoire — activistes, bureaucrates, historiens et politiciens—ce changement révèle l’attrait public de l’iconographie du suffrage britannique au détriment de l’enregistrement matériel du labeur « tranquille » des activistes australiens, un sentiment qui a de plus en plus façonné la commémoration des histoires locales du suffrage.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136009102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Having assisted in the deportation of some 265,000 Jews, the Jewish Order Service now played a marginal role and suffered the same fate as the others. Ringelblum had little sympathy: “In this way, the majority of the executioners of the Warsaw Jews—the officers of the degenerate and corrupt Jewish police—died along with their families” (p. 145). One subject that does not receive much attention in the book is Jozef Szerynski himself. As the Service’s first leader who then returned to oversee the deportations, he played a crucial role in the Service, yet readers learn little about him as an individual or as a police officer. The extent to which he moulded the Service in his own image remains somewhat of a mystery. Nevertheless, Person’s account is a methodical construction of the increasing violence and corruption that led to the Jewish Order Service’s participation in the deportations. She uses the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto (Ringelblum Archive) to great effect, painting a more complex picture of the Service than the harsh black-and-white portrayal up to this point. Her account reveals the grey areas of the Service, including that it performed many routine sanitation tasks, that some officers occasionally refused orders, and that many officers accepted bribes as part of a genuine belief that they deserved them because they risked their lives on a daily basis. She seeks not to defend the Service, but to remind readers that its officers were real people facing unprecedented times. Some were ruthless collaborators; others saw their participation as an act of self-preservation for both themselves and their families. With the aid of historical perspective rooted in the passage of time, Person offers a more nuanced history of the force than is currently available.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"234 - 236"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42886649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En effet, des membres de cette famille mettront sur pied et exploiteront des établissements industriels (manufactures de boulons, fonderie, fabrique d’aliments pour bétail, scierie, manufacture de traitement et d’empaquetage de tabac) et commerciaux (quincailleries, brûlerie, commerce de miel). Au gré des opportunités, mais aussi de leurs déboires, les Goudron font preuve d’une grande mobilité dans l’espace : de Montréal, leur point d’arrivée au Canada, la plupart des membres de la famille déménagent à Berthierville dans la région du lac Saint-Pierre. Après coup, deux des fils quittent le Québec pour la Colombie-Britannique, pour ensuite revenir à Montréal dans le cas de l’un d’eux. La trajectoire des Goudron révèle aussi le rôle central de la famille dans le processus migratoire et dans la création et la bonne marche des entreprises.Abstract:From 1875 until the first years of the twentieth century, as Frenchmen by the thousands fled their native fields for a more propitious land, the Goudrons followed their example, leaving behind the forests and mountains of the Ardennes region, near the Belgian border, to sail to Canada, trusting in their entrepreneurial mindset to overcome all challenges. Of the Goudron family, some went into primary industries (smelting, sawmills), while others showed a preference for manufacturing (bolts, cattle feed, tobacco processing and packaging) or retailing (building materials, coffee roasting, honey products). Throughout their many successes and setbacks, spatial mobility was a main determinant in their lives as, having hardly set down at their point of arrival in Montréal, most of the family went on to Berthierville in the Lake Saint-Pierre region. Two of the sons soon left the province of Québec for British Columbia, though one of them came back later to Montréal. Following the Goudrons in their journey, one learns how central the role of the family is in the migration process, and in the set-up and operation of business undertakings.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"123 - 148"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48931273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pour ce faire, nous prenons pour objet d’étude le Centre international de solidarité ouvrière (CISO), issu de la conférence du même nom qui eut lieu en juin 1975 à Montréal, et les liens qu’il développa avec des syndicats indépendants du Sud global. This paper examines the trade union dimension of this radicalization through the lens of inter-union solidarity networks between Quebec and the Latin American and Caribbean region. To do so, we focus our attention and analysis on the Centre international de solidarité ouvrière (CISO), which originated from the Montreal June 1975 conference that bore the same name, and the links it developed with independent trade unions in the global South. Our study shows that the solidarity networks maintained by CISO with various Latin American organizations between 1975 and 1984 contributed to the political and ideological shaping of trade union internationalism in Quebec.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"21 - 42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47886740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Par ailleurs, nous ne connaissons aucun détail additionnel sur André Dion, éditeur de Pen-O-Rama, malgré le fait que les auteurs ont eu le privilège de s’entretenir avec lui en 2016 (p. 252). Nul doute, Clarkson et Munn ont rédigé cet ouvrage avec le souci d’inclure toutes les perspectives disponibles. À titre d’exemple, à la note 40 du premier chapitre, ils spécifient que le surintendant D. M. Ormond estimait entre 300 et 400 le nombre de participants à l’émeute de 1932 au pénitencier de Kingston, alors que Tim Buck rapportait presque le double (p. 234). Or, c’est vraiment la perspective des sans-voix qu’ils ont cherché à partager. À partir du chapitre 3 « Men Who Beefed », l’auteur et l’autrice nous font découvrir les écrits des prisonniers, un tiers des notes provenant de la presse pénale. Avec un corpus aussi imposant, rassemblant plus de 2 400 bulletins pénaux (p. 7), il aurait été utile — sinon nécessaire — de catégoriser le contenu pour brosser un meilleur portrait de ce qui intéresse et préoccupe les prisonniers. Combien d’articles ont traité des réformes ? Est-il possible d’estimer le nombre de prisonniers qui ont participé à la rédaction ? Des réponses à ces questions permettraient de mieux contextualiser les références aux réformes ou aux manquements de celles-ci. Enfin, l’excellente conclusion nous éclaire davantage sur la position idéologique de Clarkson et Munn, et sur le choix du titre du livre. En effet, ce n’est que lorsqu’on réunit sous un même ouvrage une multitude de voix que nous arrivons à une meilleure compréhension des événements historiques (p. 220). C’est aussi en connaissant le but ultime de l’auteur et l’autrice, soit de faire « un effort pour remettre en question le discours dominant sur le rapport Archambault et la réforme carcérale en général du début au milieu du XXe siècle » que nous comprenons leurs omissions au sujet de la raison de l’incarcération des différents prisonniers.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"204 - 206"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44535137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
