Documents can certainly be mined to find enough evidence to make some of her arguments plausible—for example that the “relative autonomy of the Indigenous producers was a primary factor in the merger” of the Hudson’s Bay Company and North West Company (p. 182). However, even though she recognizes Indigenous agency, Indigenous people are nonetheless reduced to bit players in the service of a grand theory that the history of Red River was “a microcosm of the larger transition to capitalism that occurred in the settler colonial context of Canada” (p. 185). The typical historian’s attention to the thoughts and intentions of the historical actors (Indigenous or non-Indigenous) is rarely evident. Brophy interprets historical events and developments superficially, emphasizing the evidence that can support her interpretation, but neglecting other evidence. The treatment of the so-called Selkirk Treaty of 1817 speaks to this. The treaty is important to the book because the final chapter culminates with Brophy’s roughly five-page analysis of the agreement. Historical documents contain much evidence about the complex circumstances surrounding the negotiations, and the motivations and understandings of the Indigenous and non-Indigenous signatories to the agreement. However, Brophy discusses these complexities only superficially, and appears to have been alert only to the evidence that the treaty was more the product of process than people, concluding that “understood in relation to the changes that came before it and those that occurred in the decades that followed, the Treaty of 1817 is an invaluable cipher for comprehending the scope of transformations wrought by the processes of dispossession” (p. 178). In the end, Brophy’s arguments are more about her modifications to Marxist theory than they are about the Red River Colony. She explains that “this book is a historical, critical, and theoretical study, but above all—as a commentary on exploitation and autonomy—it is a political intervention” (p. 187). Readers should approach the book with that in mind. They are likely to find it convincing as a historical work only if they subscribe to similar political and ideological perspectives.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"195 - 198"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47260760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike the way Catholicism in the French fur trade was deployed to achieve imperial as well as commercial ends, Christianity in the HBC was positioned exclusively with commerce in mind. This meant it was used not to colonize Indigenous cultures or spaces but to control and protect the company’s overseas resources and support corporate relations in London. Even when this use changed in the early 1800s as baptism and religious education was offered to mixed-ancestry children of company men, the corporate agenda remained at the heart of the company’s use of religion. The history of religion in the early modern HBC underlines that the company’s identity and aspirations at this time were commercial rather than imperial.Abstract:La Compagnie de la Baie d’Hudson (CBH) du début de l’ère moderne a mis en place une forme de christianisme qui était résolument corporatiste dans sa conception. Contrairement aux usages du catholicisme dans le cadre de la traite des fourrures française, déployé à des fins impériales et commerciales, le christianisme de la CBH était conçu dans une optique exclusivement commerciale. Cela signifie qu’il était non pas utilisé pour coloniser les cultures ou les espaces autochtones, mais plutôt pour contrôler et protéger les ressources de la compagnie situées à l’étranger, tout en soutenant les relations de l’entreprise à Londres. Même si cette utilisation a changé au début des années 1800, lorsque le baptême et l’éducation religieuse ont été accordés aux enfants des hommes de la compagnie issus de familles mixtes, les objectifs commerciaux sont demeurés déterminants dans la pratique de la religion au sein de la compagnie. L’histoire de la religion dans la CBH au début des temps modernes montre que l’identité et les aspirations de la compagnie à cette époque étaient plus commerciales qu’impériales.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"1 - 20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49526166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The overlapping antigovernment, anti-vinelord rhetoric made a bridge across the political divide and gave a language and direction to the discontented. For many Euro-Algerians, this anti-government sentiment was directed at the Third Republic with an enthusiastic embrace of Marshal Pétain’s regime after the collapse of France in 1940. For Algerians, “anti-vinelord” meant “opposed to specific employers and their practices” of “colonial capitalism” (p. 161). The collapse of the Third Republic and the new Vichy regime meant declining agricultural wages, empty stomachs, and hardship. It was the hardship of the war years and the aftermath that drove anti-colonial sentiment among vine workers in ways that could be redirected by nationalists in the 1950s and 1960s. White concludes that for vineyard workers, wine was not primarily a symbol of cultural difference, but, instead, a symbol of the vast inequality of over a century of colonial rule. It was this inequality, as White skillfully demonstrates, that was at the heart of the history of wine in Algeria.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"239 - 243"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45066326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Enfin, on aurait aimé que soit abordée, au moins par les directeurs, la signification du défi méthodologique et épistémologique de construire un livre ou une contribution autour d’une année seulement. Dans les faits, chaque auteur et autrice déborde l’année 1968, dont les événements sont parfois au cœur de la démonstration, mais le plus souvent utilitaires (on tire un événement de l’année pour le rattacher à une trame en amont ou en aval appartenant plutôt aux sixties ou aux seventies). L’année 1968 devient dès lors soit un point terminal soit un point de départ pour ce qu’on juge décisif dans l’histoire canadienne, quitte à exagérer l’importance des événements ayant eu lieu en 1968. De fait, il aurait été plus juste de parler des « années 1968 », expression de plus en plus utilisée en recherche. Néanmoins, cet accent sur une année amène certains contributeurs et certaines contributrices à imaginer comment les choses auraient pu être différentes et comment le Canada se serait développé autrement si tel événement avait eu lieu ou telle décision avait été prise en 1968. Peut-être est-ce la puissante charge symbolique — liée à la transformation et même la révolution — de cette année-là qui inspire un tel exercice contrefactuel. Parions que cette charge, malgré le ton de plus en plus critique adopté envers les « années 1968 » et leur héritage ambigu depuis le début du XXIe siècle, n’est pas prête de s’épuiser. Si elle permet de dénouer les fils par trop téléologiques que les historiens et historiennes tendent à tisser lorsqu’il s’agit de leur nation, l’actualisation de 1968 n’aura pas été vaine.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"221 - 225"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44140364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

À travers cette implication missionnaire, les enfants ont été formés à croire en leur capacité de rédemption de l’enfance éloignée. La Sainte-Enfance transformait les enfants lointains en possession, commodités, jeux et personnification à la disposition de l’imagination géographique et émotive des jeunes Canadiens français et Canadiennes françaises. Elle le faisait en s’appuyant sur des techniques pédagogiques et des pratiques antérieures et transnationales de performances racialisées. Comment peut-on donc faire l’histoire de la participation des enfants canadiens-français à cette œuvre en analysant leur propre voix ? Par l’étude d’un corpus de 803 lettres envoyées par des enfants, nous disséquons comment l’Œuvre de la Sainte-Enfance rythmait le quotidien des jeunes Canadiens français et Canadiennes françaises et quel univers de représentations raciales et genrées elle leur offrait.Abstract:The Holy Childhood Association (a Pontifical Mission Society) achieved tremendous success with Canadian Catholic children from the 1920s to the 1960s. Through this missionary involvement, the children were taught to trust their ability to redeem the childhood of distant youth. The Holy Childhood Association transformed faraway children into possessions, commodities, games, and personifications at the disposal of the geographical and emotional imaginations of young French Canadians. It did so by drawing on pedagogical techniques and past transnational practices of racialized performances. How then can we trace the history of French-Canadian children’s participation in this work through an analysis of their own voices? By studying a corpus of 803 letters sent by children, we dissect how the Holy Childhood Association punctuated the daily lives of young French Canadians and what racial and gendered representations it offered them.","PeriodicalId":56358,"journal":{"name":"HISTOIRE SOCIALE-SOCIAL HISTORY","volume":"56 1","pages":"65 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49388563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
